First off stop using insulting language towards the security profession and secondly I’m telling you what type of security is needed.

Re: Massive Proposed Data Center Project - Lincoln
I was told that although it will probably be a couple years out before ground breaks here, Google has committed to building a data center on this location. They are going to finished their last two buildings in Omaha/Papillion, which were just green lite and will begin construction in the next half year, and then begin on this site.

Here's that Nebraska announcement you all were waiting:
Google plans $1.2 billion investment in Papillion, Lincoln data centers
Google plans $1.2 billion investment in Papillion, Lincoln data centers
Joe Dejka
Google officials on Tuesday announced a $1.2 billion investment in Nebraska that will expand the company's current data center in Papillion and build a new center in northeast Lincoln.
The planned investment comes on top of $5 billion that the company has invested in the Omaha metro area to date, and after the announcement earlier this month of a $350 million expansion at the Google's massive data center in Council Bluffs.
Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird celebrated the announcement Tuesday, saying that in recent years, Lincoln has become the cradle for a flourishing tech scene. Large companies and small startups, she said, are recognizing what the city has to offer.
"With today's announcement, we expand our economic vitality, workforce and stature of our city in a really big way," she said. "We know that Lincoln is already on Google's map, but I'm thrilled to say Google is now officially on Lincoln's map."

The more of these we get the more I have mixed feelings if they really provide the economic benefits. Obviously it's creating huge demand on OPPD and it seems as if the cost to upgrade is being passed to everyone. Is there a point where we'd want to pass on getting more?

Re: Massive Proposed Data Center Project - Lincoln
I was wondering the same thing....they really don't create that many jobs and they take up a ton of space. I am not sure that we shouldn't take a better look at them to see if they really are providing all the benefits.
I definitely don't like the idea that they are causing an extra surge on our power supply and OPPD is planning to spread the cost to everyone.

Just the first two phases of the Facebook data center in Papillion are valued at $286,772,688.00 I'm guessing that brings in some nice tax revenue?Greg S wrote: Tue Aug 22, 2023 3:42 pm The more of these we get the more I have mixed feelings if they really provide the economic benefits.
Google in Papillion is currently valued at $105,502,981.00
The first two phases of Google in Council Bluffs is valued at $254,854,900.00
Those are the assessed values by the county.

Serious question, don’t they lure these companies by offering some pretty massive tax breaks? I wonder how much of a net positive they really are for the area. As stated, they take up a giant amount of land and do not employ many people.Brad wrote: Tue Aug 22, 2023 4:36 pmJust the first two phases of the Facebook data center in Papillion are valued at $286,772,688.00 I'm guessing that brings in some nice tax revenue?Greg S wrote: Tue Aug 22, 2023 3:42 pm The more of these we get the more I have mixed feelings if they really provide the economic benefits.

The Union Pacific Data Center in Irvington pays a Tax Levy of 2.24121. Its not annexed by Omaha so it still in Douglas County.Linkin5 wrote: Tue Aug 22, 2023 5:07 pmSerious question, don’t they lure these companies by offering some pretty massive tax breaks? So if the Facebook Data center was located where the UP Data Center is located, and paid the same taxes, that would be an annual tax bill of $6,427,178.16. And incase you are interested, 68.6% of that goes to OPS, 16.5% goes to Douglas County, Metro Community College gets 5.3% and the other 9.6% is split between 6 different entities.

Re: Massive Proposed Data Center Project - Lincoln
There seems to be a notion that these data centers don't employ many people. While it is a fact that there are not many people employed by Google and Facebook they have hundreds of contractors there every day. These are high paying mostly union jobs. Ernie Goss had a study a while back about the impact and it was huge. I took a quick look but couldn't find it.

I don't remember how many but Google in Council Bluffs, I believe, employs hundreds. I don't know how much they pay them but hundreds of jobs is hundreds of jobs.

Yeah I know the tax revenue is very high and these don't seem to ask for any incentives. Just looking at what OPPD is going to have to expend to upper our grid and the cost seems to be spread out to all. Also, does anyone know how much water these things require/use? I remember when Google first arrived in CB they cited access to water as part of their reasoning. I think it was the Missouri but can't remember for sure.Brad wrote: Tue Aug 22, 2023 4:36 pmJust the first two phases of the Facebook data center in Papillion are valued at $286,772,688.00 I'm guessing that brings in some nice tax revenue?Greg S wrote: Tue Aug 22, 2023 3:42 pm The more of these we get the more I have mixed feelings if they really provide the economic benefits.

The new Google in Northwest Omaha has a great big tank behind it. Hopefully that lets them recirculate water?Greg S wrote: Wed Aug 23, 2023 3:10 pm Also, does anyone know how much water these things require/use? Re: Massive Proposed Data Center Project - Lincoln
My assumption is the main water use is for cooling towers. You see them at most data centers. They will recirculate water but have evaporation loss and possibly some blow down to keep the chemical treatment in line. Overall, they are an efficient way to cool on a semi-closed loop.Brad wrote: Wed Aug 23, 2023 4:02 pmThe new Google in Northwest Omaha has a great big tank behind it. The big tanks that you see "might" be for a chilled water system where they use a refrigerant-based chiller ( maybe 5-10 K tons) to chill the tank, and then that chilled water is recirculated to cool equipment when temps lower than a cooling tower provides are needed. Very little fresh water is used.

Re: Google Data Center (NWC I-80 and 56th Interchange)
Here is a screen capture from Google Maps of the tank on UNL's city campus that was built and came online when I was working there. This tank is 8.1 Million gallons if memory serves me correctly.
It serves the entire city camps and also serves as a buffer and is cooled when demand is lower It can assist with power peak demands management by not cooling as much and letting the temp climb during high energy demands.
I will add that the chillers that are on this system are located in the utility plant. near memorial stadium and not right by the tank
There is an older / smaller tank on East campus that works the same way. I believe it is just short of 3 million gallons.

Anyone know what's going on, at the north side of I-80? Trememdous amount of work going on there. Lots of equipment over a large amount of land. Noticed it yesterday driving back to Omaha.

Unfortunately a Google data center. Which between energy use, land use, and lack of long term jobs, have to be one of the worst developments for a local community.
