24th and Leavenworth

I have an honest question:
why there are so many homeless/drug addicts in the intersection of 24th and Leavenworth?

I am unable to see what attracts them there.

Near cheap apartments, near bus lines, near downtown, I spose. That four aces store and the all nations have always had a crowd.

Simple. It was always a place to find a cheap place to live, cheap booze, drugs, etc. While nearby efforts have been made to gentrify the properties you can't do it all.

This area has always had issues with the homeless. I feel like it's gotten worse since 11 Worth Cafe closed.
There is a non-profit right there called Together. They help with homeless getting back on their feet. Inside there is a food pantry to help the homeless. This is one of the reasons why so many hang out in the area.

I'm sure in time, this will be another hot zone to redevelop. We can have a nice neighborhood and help the homeless at the same time.

Maybe Together was leasing temporary office space in the 11 Worth Building. Their main building is just South of this next to the gas station.

I think they bought the building from Leavenworth Cafe family. Together Inc. is the owner of record according to Douglas County GIS.

The 24th and Leavenworth area stretching some blocks to Park Ave and Leavenworth is the Omaha version of Kensington Ave in Philadelphia or the Tenderloin District in the city core area of San Francisco…

That's an area I'm not familiar with, it's sad that people fall prey to addiction and fall through the cycle of homeless.

Meanwhile these reporters in Los Angeles, joke and lighten up the subject as they talk about the newest tourist attraction in San Francisco called the Doom Loop in which tourists pay a $30 fee for getting an exclusive walking tour on several of San Francisco neighborhoods, apparently tickets get sold out.

I was expecting a more serious tone from the LA reporters, not something to be bright and chummy about.

This area has been ground zero of Omaha’s “Skid Row” for as long as I can recall. I mean, the county did build their jail along this stretch of Leavenworth several decades ago. The liquor stores and whatnot contribute to the problem. Plus it’s close to the bus station.
I agree that this area seems poised for gentrification at some point in the not terribly distant future. There is an interesting new Latino themed restaurant that recently opened along Leavenworth at about 23rd Street. It’s on my bucket list to try.

I agree that this area seems poised for gentrification at some point in the not terribly distant future. There is an interesting new Latino themed restaurant that recently opened along Leavenworth at about 23rd Street. It’s on my bucket list to try.

Once the streetcar is built, I can see developers eyeing this area. I would even say Leavenworth from 10th to i-480 has huge potential for dense infill projects.

As for Together, maybe they are outgrowing that space? Not really sure. I would love if they moved to 16th Street next to Sienna Francis House. Build up that area to be more of a campus vibe to help the homeless. It important we are creating a supportive community for them to get back on their feet.

This would create an opportunity on 16th for dense micro apartments or tiny house community, food pantry, shelter, rehab facilities, greenhouse for year-round gardening, public space, etc.

Already 24th street north of Cuming, is showing signs of pre-booming, apartments going up, with local amenities such as stores. Also the north Omaha downtown has plenty of sidewalk beautification projects going on, with bricklined sidewalks.

The new apartment complex going up along 24th Street just north of St. Marys is a sign that the neighborhood has vitality. I wish a way existed to close down all the little liquor stores that basically exist just to sell cigarettes and cheap liquor by the pint to the addicts that congregate near these stores. I guess if developers bought up those properties for development it could happen.

I’ve always thought of this area as Omahas skid row, it just has a seedy look about it. But adds to Omahas urban fabric.
