Anyone know what was wrong with the previous bridge ? Maybe it was just old and needed to be replaced ? Will be nice when this reopens, I'm sure a pretty big inconvenience for those living and working in the area. Excellent photos thanks.

According to the project page:

These bridges were constructed in 1960 and have experienced various maintenance projects throughout the years and are near the end of their useful life.

I remember seeing a news story on the bridge before the project started, and there were pictures of chunks of concrete missing and exposed rebar. Rather they nip it in the bud than have something terrible happen.

So good for Omaha to be proactive in that respect. Last year I went through Memphis and over the Mississippi River on what I later found out was the Memphis-Arkansas bridge. It was pretty terrifying being suspended over 100 feet above a giant river and seeing chunks of concrete missing and exposed rebar nearly continuously for almost 2 minutes. I'm surprised the Minneapolis bridge collapse has been the only one so far.

I think 72nd over the UP tracks should happen soon. That'll be a real nightmare.

Looks like the bridge opened up today sometime, which means 72nd Street should be starting in the spring. I don't think 72nd will be a full closure though so that shouldn't be quite so bad for traffic.

"42nd Street is like the crossroads of south Omaha. If you're going anywhere, you're coming here," Councilman Ron Hug said. The 42nd Street Bridge closed for repairs in October 2022.

Some neighbors are disappointed to see the new bridge on 42nd street near I-80 is falling apart.

The bridge opened back up in December after closing down for construction that lasted over a year.

Now, it's at it's full use and after just a few months, the Northbound lane is peeling.

Neighbors like Chris Wright expected more.

"And i just think the tax money we pay in this state, i think things should be done right," says Wright.

The City Streets Department says this damage is likely happening when a polymer coating fails and comes off the road. Right now there is no timeline to fix it, but the bridge is still safe to drive on.

What is the point of it then? I know it is coming off the bridge on Hwy 275 to CB. The road was smooth before they installed it, not so much anymore.

There is a few spots of this happening up in Sioux City area on I29 too. They are really bad.

One thing that I did see is both are over a railroad. I am wondering if that is something that caused the issue too.

There is a few other spots outside of Sioux City on I29, but these are not on bridges too.

About five or so years ago NU, in partnership with NDOT, laid down a sealer coat on the Hwy 77 bridges south of I-80. That failed almost immediately and left a mess. Those bridges also went over railroad tracks.

I just looked at that area via Google Earth, And it sure does look like the same issue.

They might need to do some more research with this coating to see if railroads is causing this issue or causes the coating to break down faster.

I know my dad tried to say something to the local Iowa DOT office about these spots in Sioux City, but the Iowa DOT office only can say, "It is a new bridge. It can not be doing this already." I do not know if someone that is higher up has looked this bridge tho.

There is even bridge expansion joints on the bridge over the Floyd River that likes to throw you from time to time, and all they can say about it is the same thing. One day, these joints can be OK, but a few hours later, these joints feels like hitting a pot hole.
