This is total BS

Post by ItsAllAboutMe »

The NSAA absolutely knew that the private suites may have alcohol in them. I doubt you are going to see a serious amount of drinking going on.

It was actually only one or two members of the NSAA that didn't want the event moved to Omaha that decided to make a big stink about it and they waited until the week of the event. They knew about it the day the bid's were received. They have two year contract that they couldn't just pull out of. This is nothing more then sour grapes from a couple of Lincoln NSAA members.

From what I've heard from more than one source (even Hal Daub stated most of it on the radio today)..This is absolutely correct!..

"We had heard about how bad it was going to be, but it really wasn't at all," she said. "We got parked and into the arena easier than I remember it being in Lincoln."
But the Omaha experience wasn't perfect for Belville, who has attended two state wrestling tournaments in Lincoln.

"I'm not impressed by the concessions," she said. "The Devaney had booths set up all over, and the food was really good."
I'm not sure what this woman's standards are, but the food is one of my favorite things about the qwest center. I can understand bitching about concession prices. But she really thinks the concessions are better at the devaney center?
Yeah, those Levy Restaurants can't hold a candle to 8-hour-old steamed Fairbury hot dogs. There is a certain type of Nebraskan that travels to another city and comes home and brags about how good the Sizzler was in Kansas City or Dallas or Chicago or pretty much any other city that has wonderful food. I am not suggesting that rural folk are any less cultured than city folk, as there are plenty of Omahans that would prefer to eat at an Applebees or Chilis than a local restaurant. Iam suggesting that some Nebraskans are pretty parochial and simplistic, food-wise.

There is an element in Lincoln that would come to Omaha for a tournament and only eat at Runza or Valentino's. Heaven forbid that they should venture out of their comfort zone and try an Omaha establishment.

There, that's enough Omaha-centric, Lincoln-and-Outstate Nebraska bashing, yes?

I wouldn't consider it Lincoln bashing, as I doubt many Linconites would have that attitude towards things. There are some great independently owned resturants in Lincoln, Yiayia's for example (then again, in Yiayia's, I know "great" is subjective...but I think it's great).

[Skutt Catholic Coach] Hildebrandt raved about the setup at the Qwest Center.

"I really like it a lot in here," Hildebrandt said. "There's a lot of space on the floor and in the stands. It's a first-class facility all the way."

I think the media is making the alcohol factor a bigger deal than it actually is for the people who are attending. I think a couple of the NSSA people found the right reporter to create the stir.

Actually, if you take a look at the Lincoln and Grand Island newspapers you'll see that they consider the alcohol issue silly too.

I do like the food at Devaney. Isn't the pizza at the Qwest some sort of frozen brand (can't remember the name and I have UNO hockey season tickets and am there all the time)? At the Devaney love the Valention's and Runza options, and I do think Fairbury are the best game day hot dogs.

From W-H sports writer Craig Sesker in today's W-H:

'The Big Q is bigger, better, newer, safer and has more amenities and better parking facilities. It's a state-of-the-art facility.

It was interesting to see the Nebraska School Activities Association being so quick to criticize the Qwest Center for having alcohol in its suites.

Anybody who thinks they should move this event back to Lincoln may have been body-slammed one too many times. If the Qwest Center is good enough for the NCAA, it should be good enough for the NSAA.'..

Thank you..

Attendance Friday night approximately 14,100 ---

Had a thought while i was there tonight -- NSSA wanted the alcohol put away BUT the smoking areas were open.

Yea, people really seem to be just finding anything they can to make the Devaney center sound like heaven. For God sake people the Qwest is good enough for the NCAA wrestling championship but its not good enough for Terry's highschool wrestling in Grand Island??? Give me a freakin break people!

well i will agree with him on one of his quotes
Sure, the weather was cold outside, but do you mean tell me that the fabulous, new Qwest Center doesn't have any heat? Not sure how it was in the higher levels, but on the floor of the arena, you could've stored popsicles in your pocket without even making a mess.
I was in the upper bowl most of the day and it was cold --- people were covering up with their coats, sweaters, and whatever else they had. Not sure what was going on with the heat that day.

From a journalistic standpoint, this guy is a hack. If he was writing for a high school paper and I was his teacher, I'd give him an F.

I found myself wanting to ask him, "Terry? What did Roger Dixon say when you asked him about the heat? And what did the manager for Levy Restaurants say when you asked him about the quality of your chicken sandwich?"

Part of the job of being a reporter is to investigate, to contact people, to actually report. He obviously didn't want to do any legwork for his "story". If Terry simply wants to sit at his desk and vent, he should quit and just write letters to the editor of the Independent.

By the way, there are many good restaurants within walking distance of the Qwest Center. That would mean venturing out among the evil Omahans, and yes, it aint like home where you know everybody on the street, but hey, I have faith in you. Maybe next year Terry can bring his own food from home.

Simply put, Terry is a member of the press. He should have asked Roger Dixon AT THE TIME why it wasn't warmer in the Arena. Of course, that would possibly have solved the problem and I really don't think Terry wants it solved.

I was told that the organization/promoter putting on the event decides what the temperature is going to be. If Sesame street wants it 60 --- they get it 60 until they decide to turn it up.

All i know is that the temp Friday night was warmer than it was most of the day on Saturday.

Just felt a need to try and counter-balance all the sunshine pumping that has been going on for the past two years about the Qwest in the pages of the OWH.

1) Hard to make money in agriculture? Get a new job. Period. I loved video post-production but the writing was on the wall, so I have a new job. "But my family has owned this land for 200 years!" Tough noogies. Plenty of people are making money in agriculture, so quit your whining. Go organic. There's a huge market and the margins are off the charts.

2) As soon as somewhere else in Nebraska can support 15,000+ people, their cars, their lodging, etc, then we'll talk. Oh yeah... call me when that venue also has enough space to hold THE ACTUAL EVENT.

3) Pay for parking? SHUT UP.

4) Out-state Nebraskans want as little to do with Omaha as Omaha wants to do with out-state Nebraska. Guess which one would be better off without the other. Be careful of what you wish.

5) Grand Island could use a good man made lake.

There. I feel better. :)

Excellent stuff guys..Thanks for reposting that piece Bob..It had been awhile since I read it and needed a good laugh  ..

I emailed Jeff Beals the current sour grapes piece by 'ol Terry Douglass and here was his response to me upon reading his drivel:

'Well, when you only make $25K a year writing for a one-star newspaper, you probably would think the Qwest Center concessions are expensive. Typical small-town Nebraska parochial guy.'..

 ..

Yep..The anti-Omaha sentiment that exists in outstate Nebraska still burns bright and strong..

And with all the "love" emanating from this thread, it's hard to imagine why.....

Qwest Center is NOT filing to host the high school volleyball tournament.
http://journalstar.com/articles/2006/04 ... 340682.txt
Omaha was expected to bid for state volleyball after successfully hosting the three-day state wrestling tournament in February at the 16,000-seat Qwest. Between Qwest and the civic center, all six courts needed for the first round and semifinals could’ve been accommodated at the two facilities just blocks apart.

“It (state volleyball) doesn’t work for our (Qwest’s) main tenants, Creighton basketball and UNO (Nebraska-Omaha) hockey,’’ Dixon said. “Since we already have wrestling, to take two weekends away from them puts them in a bind in terms of scheduling.”
Lincoln and Grand Island are expected to present bids to the NSAA. The new 7,500-seat Heartland Events Center, which opens later this year, will be the centerpiece of Grand Island’s first attempt at landing the state tournament.

Not a surprise...the high school volleyball finals might have been swallowed whole in the Qwest Center. The atmosphere of the NU Coliseum makes that a better venue for it anyway.

We'll see if Grand Island can make a reasonable bid for it, but if there are still people who think wrestling should still be in Lincoln for emotional reasons, they really can't make a cohesive argument for this event in Grand Island.

Lincoln keeps state volleyball tournament, but NSAA concerned about Pershing
Lincoln Journal Star wrote:State tournaments in the so-called team sports have been the exclusive property of Omaha and Lincoln for decades. But with Grand Island’s new arena near completion and with Lincoln still working on a plan to replace Pershing, board members sounded as if that could change in the near future.

With Grand Island in the mix for state tounaments, this could make things more interesting. I think it would be more popular w/ the rest of the STATE if it were to be held in Grand Island simply because it would be more equally distant to everybody. I wonder what Omaha and Lincoln will do to woe them back.

Well...considering more than half the population of the state lives in Omaha and Lincoln, I think it might be a moot point.

IMO I think it would move to GI a lot easier than it would move to Omaha. I bet the heads in Lincoln have a brother in the tri-cities and or grew up near there. Or at least don’t feel threatened by GI. GI is more like one of their own if you know what I mean. They don’t have the crime that parallels KC after all.
