Trader Joe’s coming to North Downtown-

Post by Omaha Cowboy »

The “Cryptic Rumor Department” has heard from a source with Creighton University yesterday, that Trader Joe’s plans to locate their 2nd Omaha store in North Downtown..

No intel about time frame, but my opinion is, this development announcement could happen very soon..

On a scale of 1-10 (1 least likely, 10 definitely likely), considering the source, I say this is an 8.. Exciting times for Omaha development..

Stay tuned :thumb:

Lol..

Honestly, I believe metro Omaha could support 3 or 4 TJ’s locations. 3 definitely imo…

People desperately wanted a Trader Joe's when I lived in Tulsa, but the only alcohol you could sell in a grocery store was 3.2 beer. Trader's Joe's would have to forego the alcohol section of their grocery store and they weren't willing to do that. Though, I know some of the alcohol laws in Oklahoma have changed over the last 10+ years, so perhaps it's no longer an issue.

Trader Joe's is like a few other businesses where despite the demand they are reluctant to open a second location. Cheesecake Factory and Cheddars are the same way. They could be at 100% capacity with a 90 minute wait to be seated 7 days a week and they will just not build another. lol Perhaps there's some marketing genius behind that. Maybe it makes the place feel trendier than it otherwise would.

Trader Joe’s has a store in both Tulsa and Oklahoma City, so that 3.2 beer issue must have been resolved…

This would be awesome for downtown Omaha!

We are moving to the Courthouse area in Arlington, VA next week and a Trader Joe's is just a 5 min walk away.

I’ve always thought off of Cummings would be a better idea, but can understand the reasoning for others wanting it to be IN DOWNTOWN core area, walkability and such.

Fantastic rumor and hope it comes to north DT! Creighton students will frequent it not to mention the businesses around Millwork. Rather than only this having grocery another Hy-Vee, Aldi or Target would be nice in the civic spot.

The builders district has a spot marked for a small grocer in the current renderings. I think Noddle situated next to cuming. Between millwork and builders district, they are adding almost 1000 units. Both districts also boast a decent amount of office space. Additionally, if there is further development at lot B, plus Creighton's staff and students and nearby hotels, there is a decent population within walking distance.

If trader Joe's goes there, maybe we could get an Aldi at civic site.

First things first, let's see an announcement from trader Joe's.

Btw if the rumor is for North Downtown, then that excludes the civic site. North downtown has always been north of i-480, right?

I like where you are going here! Traders Joes in North Downtown and Aldi at Civic Square.
Then you would need something near Leavenworth to make it a trifecta.

I want to tear down the parking garage on 11th and Jackson. Put a 8-10 story mixed use building here. On the bottom 2 floors would be a food market. Year-round vendors, cooking classes, food sampling, etc. Think like Seattle's Pike Place Market or Chelsea Market in New York.
Omaha's Transit Future starts now. Let's make the change!

Really makes me question White Lotus’s ability to get something put together if this grocery ends up getting announced before the Civic Site’s.

I said it on the Urban Grocery store thread I think, but I'll say it again.

Trader Joe's just makes sense in downtown or North Downtown I guess. With their often more urban stores than a lot of others.

I hope its true, it offers a lot of things for college students and offers some food for regular people too.

I agree with Garrett here.. Many of us long time forum members remember the early days of North Downtown development as we had a Forum meet up back in 2005 at “In Play” (remember In Play? A version of Dave & Busters Downtown, before D & B entered the Omaha market in 2006)..

Wherever Trader Joe’s decides to locate downtown, I think it will be a big hit. The solid rumor right now is North Downtown..

I feel good about this one.. We’ll see…

Trader Joe’s was one of the selling points for me when I bought my condo. I can walk there (and to 2 other grocery stores, and Lidl is coming soon). Can I get everything I need from TJ’s? No, but I could manage if it was the only store available. I always thought Omaha could support 3 or four of them. I like the quality of their products, mostly at a good price point. They are also known to pay and treat their employees well.

Good commentary..

And I believe if Trader Joe’s ends up opening in North Downtown, it would be an obvious selling point and may tip the scale of attractiveness for those looking to move into a more urban environment…

I would much rather have a store like Mom's Organic Market than Trader Joe's.

But Mom's Organic Market is only in the DC area. I'm a fan of that store plus it includes an organic and greens restaurant called Naked Lunch. The quantity, flavor and nutrition was top notch at a much lower price than healthy restaurants in Omaha.

Plus buying, dispensing fresh gallons of alkaline ionized water was a nice bonus.

I have also heard the TJ's news. Fingers crossed.

My upper-middle class family loves Trader Joe's, but I wish North Omaha could get another more affordable grocery store.

Aldi at 30th & Sorensen is at the heart of North Omaha. Just a few minutes walk from the North Omaha Transit Center, and North Omaha has the densest public transit service in the city. Walmart at 50th & Ames is also quite accessible. Bakers and Family Fare also up in Florence. I don't see another grocer coming in. North Downtown isn't North Omaha. I think Trader Joe's would be a decent fit, but I think a Walmart Neighborhood market or Hy-vee would be way better.

I’ve never considered TJ’s to be expensive for anything. Their wines are seriously priced to sell. Same with their food, which is probably why they are so popular, including with young people who presumably don’t have a ton of “fun money” left over at the end of the month,

I think TJ’s has a reputation in Omaha for being an upscale/expensive place because of where it’s located. Most of the stores near me are in working class neighborhoods. Their prices for certain items are some of the best around, and they’re always packed. My favorite table wine is an Italian Sangiovese they sell for $4.99.
