Kalkbrenner Named to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Watch List

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. (October 27, 2023) — The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced that Creighton's Ryan Kalkbrenner is one of 20 candidates on the watch list for the 2024 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award. Named after Class of 1995 Hall of Famer and three-time NCAA Champion Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the annual honor, in its 10th year, recognizes the top center in men's college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.

Both Kalk and Trey are on the national pre-season player of the year watchlist. Creighton is one of only 3 schools to have multiple players listed. (Duke, USC)

#8 Men's Basketball Blows Past Wayne State in Exhibition Win

Trey Alexander scored 22 points to lead four Bluejays in double-figures as the No. 8 Creighton men's basketball team never trailed in a 95-48 exhibition victory over Wayne State on Friday night. Ten out of the 14 Bluejays to suit up scored, led by 22 points by Alexander and 12 points each from Steven Ashworth, Baylor Scheierman and Johnathan Lawson. Creighton ended the night shooting 52.9 percent from the floor, including a 42.1 percent (16-of-38) marksmanship from three. The Bluejays also dished out 17 assists, including six from Ashworth while Ryan Kalkbrenner recorded four blocked shots.

Creighton opens the 2023-24 regular-season on Tuesday, Nov. 7 when it hosts Florida A&M.

Great start for Trey, he looked unstoppable. Ashworth looked good as well and there were a few times I commented how a shot he made wouldn’t have been made by Nembhard (although I doubt we see any dunks by Ashworth. Obviously the talent of Wayne state isn’t amazing but it was good to see the guys at home again.

Also largest crowd ever for an exhibition game: 17,132

Assuming Creighton takes care of business tonight and on Saturday, they should be number seven in the nation which would match their highest ranking ever since #4 Michigan State lost last night.

I always think that the BIG 10 is so overrated...sure they have quite a few teams that make the tournament each year, but they haven't won the championship since 2000 when Mich St won. The Big East and Big 12 are king in that category having won 3 and 2 championships in the past 10 years.

For anyone keeping track, Kaluma had his first game last night for KState. pretty much the same old Art; 1-11 shooting, 0-5 from 3, 4 turnovers, but he did finish with 6pts and 9 rebs.

What a good first game. Better than the past few years with the close games when they shouldn’t have been. This should help the bench to develop a little more too.

Trey, Ashworth and Baylor all played great! Trey especially, looks like he is in a whole other league.

Another amazing game by Trey, he is on a whole other level. Got off to a slow start but the Jays made 19-22 shots at one point and pulled away.

Wow, Jays didn't move in the AP poll at all even with 2 teams ahead of them losing. Tenn moved up to #7 and Ariz moved up to #3.

Either way #8 is still great.

Creighton University Athletics announced on Monday that three upcoming men's basketball games at CHI Health Center Omaha are officially sold out. The sold out match-ups include tomorrow night's 9:00 p.m. tip-off against Iowa, the December 16th game against No. 22 Alabama and the Senior Day home finale against Marquette, currently ranked No. 4, on March 2nd. Limited standing room only tickets will go on sale on the morning of each game at 10 a.m. at the box office at CHI Health Center Omaha.
