UNMC expects Farnam's 'jug handle' at 42nd to be removed



A midtown Omaha headache may soon be a thing of the past. The old Mid-City Bank is finally being torn down. In 2011, the bank failed, but the building is still there. As it stands now, eastbound traffic on Farnam is diverted to Harney at 42nd Street. Drivers who wish to remain on Farnam must turn left and then right to get back on Farnam. But UNMC expects that will change and Farnam's eastbound traffic will someday not be disrupted

It doesn't block it. When they converted Farnam to one way, they just built that island out in the street. Its really no different than what they did at Dodge and Turner Blvd where Dodge toes to one way traffic.

I believe this is what will happen. Farnam St and 42nd St will go straight through and the jug handle will go to UNMC making this a nice sized lot. The unknown is what will happen to Harney? Will it go to two-way at least through Blackstone?

Omaha having any 1 ways beyond the dodge and douglas couplet is crazy. The traffic counts and ROW size make all the 1 ways unnecessary.

Why are we holding onto 1960s era traffic planning?

After the building is removed they should change Harney back to 2 way traffic from Turner to Saddle Creek, remove the couplet and redevelop the lot.

Seriously Ive never seen Harny with any traffic ever going east even at 5pm.

The University of Nebraska Medical Center and the City of Omaha will host a Public Open House January 17, 2024, from 5:30 - 7 PM. The purpose of this meeting is to share the construction timeline and phasing for the intersection of Saddle Creek and Leavenworth.

The meeting will be held at the Durham Research Center Auditorium, 550 S. 45th Street. Parking for the public meeting is available across the street in Lot 2.

Omaha doesnt do a great job of taking feedback from local residents.

The whole changing farnam to 2 way traffic is a great example of locals telling the city they dont like their transit plan and the city taking its ball and going home rather than adjust.

As someone who uses this intersection daily Im not looking forward to some of the proposed changes for access on 48th.

I dont think an open house has a purpose when Omaha doesnt adjust its plans when locals push back on specific elements.

That weird stretch of Saddle Creek Road from Dodge to Leavenworth Streets along the edge of the University of Nebraska Medical Center looks like Omaha traffic engineering at its funkiest.

Drivers must negotiate the hopelessly tight half-cloverleaf at Dodge, travel south-by-southwest past a semi-blighted former industrial area, and then negotiate the unfortunate convergence of Saddle Creek, Leavenworth and 48th Street in a jumbled five-way intersection.

The adjacent stretch of Farnam was also closed for much of the year to widen the street between 48th Street and Saddle Creek and add sidewalks.

On Wednesday, city engineers and consultants laid out plans for 2024 during a public hearing at UNMC, focusing on upcoming construction near the Saddle Creek/Leavenworth intersections. About 40 people attended.

The engineers said work is slated to begin in April and wrap up next fall, though utility work will start sooner. Planned improvements include:

New dual left-turn lanes on Leavenworth Street.

Longer left- and right-turn lanes on Leavenworth and Saddle Creek.

A new traffic signal, sidewalks on the northwest and southeast corners, and new driveways to several adjacent businesses.

In addition, the direct access from 48th Street to Leavenworth from the north — about 100 feet west of Saddle Creek — is being eliminated. 48th Street traffic will instead be diverted to Saddle Creek at Jones Street, north of the QuikTrip gas station.

The duel left turn lanes on Leavenworth westbound are definitely needed. The other duel lefts on saddle creek and leavenworth Eastbound really arent necessary.

Removing 48th access isnt ideal with the fire department being on 48th. But it will probably make the intersection safer. Most people on 48th go right anyway.

The biggest flaw I see is that this intersection gets a lot more dangerous for pedestrians because it just gets a lot wider with the duel lefts.

Its an improvement for traffic flow and car safety---Id give it an A for that. Id give it an F for pedestrian safety since its going from 4 lanes to 6.

To improve pedestrian safety I would have removed the slip turn lane by bakers. And made the medians wider for pedestrians to have a safe stooping point.

The space is limited---really left turns are only an issue at 730am and 4-6pm. This plan fixes that---still think it makes it less safe for pedestrians for the sake of efficiency

I don't think the fire department uses 48th. Whenever I am at Taco John, the fire department goes past 48th and turns on Poppleton.

Fire station 34 only has access on 48th. They could buy the land behind them and move the access to Saddle Creek. But that would cost a million dollars? to demolish a building, build a ramp, punch out rear doors, or preferably build a new building on saddle creek.

As well as increase capacity for left and right turn lanes.

The city is planning to replace existing payment in the area and put in new traffic signals at the intersection too.

With utility relocation expected to begin in February.

The credit union is currently in the way. Once the new corner ATM is done, the “old” building will be torn down. along with Russel Speeder’s. Then the work will continue.
