According to UNO's journalism news show, the OWH is moving the rest of their employees to the Freedom Center. They quote the OWH having 200+ employees in 2017, now down to under 50.

As a member of that Older Generation mentioned in that video, I bemoan the fact that print newspapers have become paper tigers. Pardon the pun. We still subscribe to the print Sunday OWH, and until last winter we also received the Sunday NY Times. I receive news and information from a wide variety of online sources, and subscribe to a handful, including the NYT and Washington Post as well as the World-Herald, and several newspapers and online media sites in Mexico. I also financially support (and on at least occasion read) several magazines via Apple News, plus Iowa Public TV and local NPR radio station KIOS. I think it’s vitally important to be informed about local, national and international happenings.
The people who continue to work for the World-Herald are doing the best that they can. They are juggling too many balls and struggling not to drop any of them.

Wow...50 OWH employees remaining? And a good chunk of that is Husker football beat writers.Garrett wrote: Fri Oct 13, 2023 11:32 pm According to UNO's journalism news show, the OWH is moving the rest of their employees to the Freedom Center. Wonder what’s going to take over the building now? If I understand correctly, the sale of OWH excluded the building.

You could fit all of their employees into a medium sized restaurant party room.

Yesterday, for perhaps the very first time in our lifetimes, the World-Herald didn’t bother to publish a print edition on a Nebraska football game day. No reason was announced for their failure to put out a print edition.

Shatel and McKewon took shots about yesterday's Husker game on Peacock. And today's online OWH has an article about how to cancel a Peacock subscription. Wonder if the OWH would like it if Peacock streamed a short video of how to cancel a local online newspaper subscription.

LOL. I was happy to pay the six bucks vs. having to listen to the usual blow-arse announcers on the traditional networks.jag42 wrote: Sun Nov 12, 2023 1:56 pm Shatel and McKewon took shots about yesterday's Husker game on Peacock. I saw a lot of level headed people, including Scratchtown Mike and Rusty Lord, reminding people that it wasn't that long ago not all games were televised and Pay-per-view games were $25-$50.
I can't remember why but we only paid $1 per month for the first 12 months for Peacock. It was some sort of sign up for ________________ and get Peacock for $1.

Re: The Omaha World Herald
Funny, Brad. Their justification for not calling it the Qwest Center rang so hollow. "Qwest is paying a pittance. Taxpayers are on the hook so we're not going to call it Qwest." I've got to believe that whoever wrote that for the paper asked the higher up who demanded that staff not call it Qwest Center if he was serious"Brad wrote: Sun Nov 12, 2023 9:41 pmReminds me of when the OWH wouldn't call the Arena "Quest Center Omaha".... Comcast is our local cable tv provider & ATT is the local phone company. We pay $65 to comcast for 1 gig internet & peacock is included. That the owh actually provided instructions on how to cancel is, to me, a throwback to the 80s for them. Petty & childish.
On a more serious note, for reasons passing understanding I have access to the owh e-edition (90s anyone?). I took a look at the business section. There was actually a time when the business section had local business news. In truth, there was a time when the owh had a lot of local news. Ok, so the owh has husker news but back in the day when it had a local editorial staff they really did have more than one person whose job it was to report on local happenings. It seems that now it's copy and paste AP stories, probably someone in the barn that is Lee's headquarters in Iowa. What a pathetic excuse for journalism.

Funny that a large percentage of the comments were from people who wanted to keep their peacock subscription. Kind of a well-deserved backfire. I'm curious how long they continue to print in Omaha, if in fact they still do.nebugeater wrote: Mon Nov 13, 2023 6:00 amOn the OWH Facebook page, where they posted the step by step on how to cancel Peacock, I asked in the comments if they could provide the same instructions on how to cancel the OWH.Brad wrote: Sun Nov 12, 2023 9:41 pmReminds me of when the OWH wouldn't call the Arena "Quest Center Omaha".... Yup...I commented a similar sentiment, that perhaps Peacock could stream a small feature on how to cancel online newspaper subscriptions. On a side note we have subscribed to Peacock for over a year. We enjoy it and find the $5.99/month very worthwhile. I like watching old SNL episodes (though the music performances are cut, probably due to music rights/licensing).nebugeater wrote: Mon Nov 13, 2023 6:00 amOn the OWH Facebook page, where they posted the step by step on how to cancel Peacock, I asked in the comments if they could provide the same instructions on how to cancel the OWH.Brad wrote: Sun Nov 12, 2023 9:41 pmReminds me of when the OWH wouldn't call the Arena "Quest Center Omaha".... Have had Peacock since June. At that time, I was not aware of the B1G coverage but got an over for a year for $19.99. Subscribed at that cost and have enjoyed it so far.jag42 wrote: Mon Nov 13, 2023 5:36 pmYup...I commented a similar sentiment, that perhaps Peacock could stream a small feature on how to cancel online newspaper subscriptions. Re: The Omaha World Herald
Gosh I had completely forgotten how the OWH refused for a number of years to refer to the Qwest Center as the Qwest Center. It seemed incredibly childish, because, well…it was incredibly childish. Eventually the paper relented, with a tail between its legs explanation as to how they had made their point and in order to avoid more public confusion they would henceforth start referring to it by its true name, rather than “the Omaha arena” or somesuch made up name.
I think the former publisher Harold Anderson probably had a hand in the original stubborn refusal to acknowledge reality. He was a legend in his own mind, I still recall reading his Sunday newspaper column back around the turn of the Century when he laughed at the possibility that people would actually prefer to access their news online as opposed to holding pieces of paper in their hands.

Yep..
It was absolute silliness. Back when Harold Anderson/W-H wielded power at the highest level in the state of Nebraska..Anderson thought he could do anything he wanted, and get away with it..unfortunately (sadly) most of the time, he did..
And stating Anderson was a “legend in his own mind” is spot on analysis…
Ciao..LiO…Peace

Correct. When the OWH does finally shutter completely some day, the narrative won't be "jobs leaving the suburbs". It'll be "another lamestream media outlet killed by its own leftist socialist woke agenda".Garrett wrote: Sun Mar 17, 2024 1:55 pmI mean it’s unfortunate but that’s more of an issue with the World Herald than downtown.

Re: The Omaha World Herald
I remember back in the day (1990s I believe) when the once dreaded Oklahoma Sooners football program basically fell apart and became just another mediocre team no one paid much attention to. Those of us who lived through the 1970s and ‘80s and the Barry Switzer era had grown to spend a lot of time and attention (and heartburn) fretting over those darn Sooners and how they always seemed to ruin the NU football season. Well, once the OU program fell into irrelevance we were all like the proverbial dog that finally caught the car. “Damn, now what are we all gonna do for entertainment?”
My relationship with the OWH has gone through these same stages. For generations they were a political and journalistic force to be reckoned with. Politicians crossed their editorial board at their peril. Their jingoistic right wing ownership paid lip service at best to every minority community in the state. Middle aged and older white males ruled the roost. There was simply no powerful media alternative in the state. You were forced to subscribe to the paper or be out of touch with most everything going on inside the state. To be fair they had some talented writers and columnists that were worth reading, but the political slant of the newspaper was a bitter pill to have to swallow.
Then, seemingly overnight, the OWH became a virtual paper tiger (pun not necessarily intended). The WWW brought the news for free to everyone via their desktop, then laptop, then cell phones and tablets. No one felt the need to purchase new buggy whips once we all had autos, as it were. The Great and All Powerful Oz suddenly became the emperor without clothing. And it has ceased to be a chief indoor sport to ridicule anything that had fallen so far, so fast.
I suspect that, like other city newspapers, they will soon go to print publishing only a few days per week. And few will even notice.

It went to heck when the conservative graybeards read the tea leaves--that print was going the way of the dodo--and sold out to liberal graybeards. The biggest mistake that Buffett made was letting sentiment cloud his judgment.

That seems to be the trend. The LA Times, USA Today and Washington Post all declined to issue endorsements this cycle. That NEVER would have happened in years past. However the fact is that people just don’t pay much attention to newspapers anymore.

Just reading through this thread and I'm not nostalgic at all for a time when OWH basically shaped the opinion for the entire state and you "crossed them at your own risk". They seemed to often abuse their power, and some examples from the late 80's into the early 90's of how they could literally kill a story they didn't like still reverberate into today. I will dance on their grave the day the name is officially dead.
