Looks like the core jumped up again. Going to be about as tall as the library was within a few weeks I imagine.

Looking back, it last went up on Dec 22nd so its been almost a month. I would think with warmer nicer weather coming in a few months, they will start to pick up the pace.

you know, i drove by yesterday on my way home and thought it looked taller I didn't get a picture of it, but the tower crane for mutual was hanging over Douglas, and so was the crane at the Holland Center from the other side. It looked really cool.

side note: per 'downtown Omaha erection,' they are working on the garage incline on the Farnam side now too.

Also, I figured out what they’re doing on the northeast corner. Notice the shape? Look at the original street-level rendering and compare…



That’s the corner of the building. That’s why it tucks and curves, and will all the way up the facade. The reason that platform is lifted is because of the multi-story atrium. Notice those east ground columns are taller.

Saw on WOWT interview with one of the developers he said the tower core should be 200 feet in 6 months and 300 by the end of this year. I found that to be interesting. 200 ft will be about as tall as the twin tower Central Park Plaza.

That sounds about right. They have added 2 stories in the past month even with the horrible weather. I would assume speed would pick up once we get some nicer days.

With his statement, I didn’t know if he was referring to the tower or the old mutual site

Wonder how long we’ll wait for news on the old site.

Lanoha had said that he was going to present their plans before the planning board in March 2023 and that they were projecting $400 million for the development. I assume that all got pushed back because of market conditions.

i get the feeling that the 'something transformational' is the new tower itself, not something in the pipeline. I may be all wet on it, though

Mutual of Omaha marks one year since groundbreaking on new tower



It’s been one year since 14th Street shut down between Farnam and Douglas Streets to make way for construction of the new Mutual of Omaha headquarters. Jason Lanoha is behind development of the new tower. He said they’ve made steady progress and now their focus is the core of the building.

“We started with piers up to eight feet wide going all the way down to the bed rock, poured a lot of map slap, other structures that help make the building strong, and now we’re coming out of the ground,” Lanoha said. “That’s going to go up first and then you’re going to have the parking structure behind it. Ultimately, the steel will wrap around the core until we reach the top.” Lanoha expects the core to be 200 feet tall in six months and 300 in a year. At that point, crews will rely on a crane to do the rest of the work until the tower is 677 feet tall.

Thats what Lanoha stated. Sounds about right b/c that would only leave a year left to finish the almost 400' that are left.

How are they getting the concrete to cure at these temps? Are there heaters behind the yellow wall?

It only needs to be warm enough so the water in the concrete mix doesn't freeze. I'm not sure how they are doing it at mutual but we did a culvert inside a tent a few years ago and there was one small heater going. Concrete also makes heat while it cures, so sometimes when you see parking lots or roads done in wither, they throw those insulated blankets over it and that is enough to keep it warm.

There are a BUNCH oh heaters on site. You can see them in one of my photos. The yellow wall is sealed with plastic sheeting at the top, containing the heat.

Once the tower is built, what will they do with the site just East of it? Is there a development plan?

Mutual has first dibs to build another building on that site up to 300-some feet, or ~150ft if someone else builds on it.
