I really wasn't too excited to try the new melts from BK, but I was near one, really hungry, and there was no line, so I said what the heck. They have mushroom & Swiss, bacon, and classic. I went with a mushroom & Swiss meal. Right out, the fries were meh. They were floppy, but still hot, so I assume they just weren't cooked quite long enough and i didn't feel compelled to finish even the small order I got. Ill give them a 5.5. Then the patty melt. I was surprised to find it's the size of a Jr Whopper. I thought this was one of those premium items due to the advertising, and the Sandwich itself being 7.49. It was kind of a shocker there. The flavor was pretty good, and it was hot. I'll give it an 8 on flavor and a 6 on execution, mainly due to its tiny size. So Sandwich gets a 7 meal gets a 6.25. Barely passing. It was fair, but wouldn't get it again.

I know ReviewBrah had a review for one of them, but I hadn't watched it. I just saw the title was "BK Surprised me" and I had assumed it was in a good way, given their reputation. I'll have to watch it to see if he was being facetious, per usual.

He wasn't being facetious. His past experiences with the melt were just so bad that this time it impressed him. Our rating was similar, mine 7, his 7.5. It wasnt great, but it wasnt terrible. Just the price and the size held it back for me. The patties were really like the size of a breakfast sausage patty, no more than 2 1/2" to 2 3/4" across.

He had the bacon melt, which sounds like it's basically a Stacker with grilled onions, so it'd probably be right up my alley, but I dunno, I wasn't too impressed so probably will skip it.

I just had Hardee's for the first time in, I guess 10 or more years. I never knew why I seldom thought to get them, probably sparse locations and none of them near me. I think the last time I got it was at 33rd and L and it was still good as I always expected it to be. But I found myself near one today and I got it. I recalled their hand cut style fries and their flame broiled thick burger being some of the best fast foot burgers. I went in with some relatively high expectations, but wow, it's nothing like it used to be. The fries were just like Don & Millies and the burger patty basically looked like it was steamed and it had next to no char on it. I felt like I was just eating a Whopper. I even splurged and decided to try their new Nashville Hot chicken tenders. Granted, they were actual tenders like what you get at Cane's, but there was next to zero Nashville Hot seasoning, no hot oil, no flavor. And for $6 for a 3 piece, I expected so much more. A huge disappointment there. I'd pay tops $3.49 for what I got.

Overall quite the disappointing reunion with Hardee's. Anybody else notice a sharp decline in Hardee's? I would have never thought they'd dive like that. Any info on how and why?

Good timing. First completely agree on their few locations and also, none are near me as well.

When I was in Chesapeake recently needed to grab a quick bite on the way to our office there. When I travel I always try and eat at local places or at least chains that we don't have here. Went to Hardee's because even though there are some in Omaha, none are near me, nor do I seem to be near them when hungry. I grabbed a combo breakfast. Had the sausage, egg and cheese muffin. I will say it was really really good. The muffin seemed homemade. The hash browns were just ok. Coffee was really good (I have to admit I really like McDonald's coffee too).

I think Hardee's probably has the best fast food breakfast. It's pretty much the only thing I eat there. Though, I do stick to the biscuits (Biscuit & Gravy or Bacon, Egg, & Cheese Biscuit). I cannot remember the last time I ordered a burger at Hardee's.

When I was a kid I remember really loving their "Cinnamon 'N' Raisin Biscuits." I know they took them off the menu for a while and replaced them with something else, then brought them back. I think they're gone again. It may be a seasonal item now or one of those things they bring back and take away over and over (McRib marketing).

Remember back in the early 1990s when Hardee's had bone-in fried chicken? I remember I had friends that worked at the Hardee's at 25th & Capehart in Bellevue (it's been gone for years) and at the end of the night when they were throwing the food out they'd be grabbing bites of the fried chicken as they tossed it. It was a little gruesomely gluttonous to witness.

Remember when Culvers had Bone-in Fried Chicken? Relatively speaking, it was not that long ago that they ended it. Maybe 5 - 7 years. IMO, it was excellent, and I would order it more often than a burger there.

Other than “Dave’s Hot Chicken” opening a 2nd location at 49th and L, has anyone had any recent fast food experiences they’d like to share? Good or bad..First ever visit or numerous time return?..

I’ll probably go through the Runza Drive through tonight and snag a bowl of their chili, which is pretty good. The Turkey Chili at Panera is pretty darn good as well..

I tried to go to Runza last night for the my one annual temperature Tuesday. It would have been $0.00! With the purchase of fries and drink of course. But Runza was out of Runzas on what I would assume is their busiest Runza time of year.

I don't mind their chili, but I really prefer mine without beans and so I find myself picking around the beans.

There was a t-shirt vendor at this year's AppleJack festival selling a "Chili & Cinnamon Rolls" t-shirt. I made a comment about it and the vendor said it was easily their most popular t-shirt that day.

This has happened to me a few times over the years. I go through Runza and they tell me they're out of runzas. It's usually after 8 PM that it happens. I can't resist the urge to respond with something like, "Let me get this straight. Runza is out of runzas?" I get it. They have to bake so they're prepped in advance. If they don't accurately forecast how many they need they'll either run out or have to throw a bunch away. Nevertheless, running out of runzas is something that should never happen at a Runza.

I'm going to get Dave's Hot chicken for lunch in reaper. I'm pretty excited

As far as chili, I think I had Runza once and I didn't care much for it. It was just salty, that was the main feature of it.

I like my chili with a lot of beans, a lot of meat, a lot of chili powder, big pieces of crushed tomato, big pieces of pepper, onion and celery, lots of spice. When I'm in the mood for a cup of chili, I'll go to Wendy's. I LOVE their chili seasoning packets and usually will add two or three of them to a large chili.

If convenience wasn't the main thing, I'd have a mind to buy 4 large chilis put em all in one pot with an already sauteed onion, bell pepper, couple celery stalks, add a can of crushed tomatoes, a couple cans of beans and maybe a pound of ground beef, more chili powder and LOTS of their chili seasoning packets. That's how hearty I like my chili.

There was a BBQ place in Tulsa whose name I forgot, but I swear their "baked beans" side dish was just Wendy's chili with a lot of brown sugar added.

I prefer my chili with chunks of beef as opposed to ground beef. I prefer it without beans. I like a nice thick base with some heat to it and a lot of chili and cumin.

Leave out the Celery and have some whole-kernel corn, and you are getting there. As a second option for an adjustment, leave out the ground beef and chop up some smoked beef brisket.

I don't mind pinto beans in reasonable amounts (my preference is for none at all), but kidney beans are a definite show-stopper. They just have that thick skin and are usually way too large. When I see a bunch of kidney beans staring at me from my bowl of chili I just get angry.

If you ever want to try some very original chili, try Dixon's Chili in Kansas City (actually located just inside Independence). Been there for decades (Harry Truman would have it shipped by train to the White House when he was president). It doesn't really have water in it like many are used to. The original location is still there very close to Kauffman and Arrowhead.

I love all kinds of chili. Vegetarian, white chicken, turkey, sausage, beef, whatever. I always put beans in the chili I make at home.
But I will never put kidney beans in chili. Or any other dish I would feed to a human.

I love kidney beans. Especially dark red. I like the robust nutritional value, the flavor, and the size and meaty texture. I like all beans really. My other favorite that stands out from the norm is large lima beans.

To me, chili is meant to be a red dish, tomato based. It's gonna be red no matter because chili powder is red. If it's got white beans and chicken I think it ought not be called chili.

Mac and Cheese certainly seems be the latest fad item in restaurants these days, everyone seems to have some variety of it. Even though I like Mac and Cheese, most of them usually don’t appeal to me.

It seems to be a bit of a phenomenon to me. I never saw Mac and cheese as anything more than a side or a snack. I like it, but it is a little on the childish side. All good and fun. I do know people well into their adulthood that eat it as a meal from Chick-fil-A, KFC, wherever else you can get it. But I don't think I'd ever go searching for a gourmet Mac and cheese from a restaurant.

If I have Mac and cheese it's one of those quick microwave Kraft bowls, or I'm going all out making it at home, using sharp cheddar, garlic, black pepper, bread crumbs and getting a good brown crust on top in the oven.

Although I have a really small sample size, Boston market Mac and cheese was by far the only one I really made a point to get.

Agreed. The gourmet macaroni and cheese (or "grown up" macaroni and cheese as some restaurants name it) are always a bit absurd to me. They basically toss in some pancetta or lobster, maybe a pinch of red pepper flakes, and then the $5 kids meal macaroni and cheese is suddenly an $18 "gourmet" macaroni and cheese. lol

Though, I'm not going to lie, I love a really good homestyle oven-baked mac-n-cheese. Tired Texan BBQ used to have a really good one.

I agree there. I noticed they have a chicken sandwich that has *GASP*... LETTUCE on it. LETTUCE?? I think that's about as far out on a limb as they've ever gone. They don't even have pickles.

Last time I had them, it was catered to work and I was blown away to see they included hot sauce packets in with the meal.

I think they could be much better if they'd just add some, you know, flavor to their menu lol. But yeah, you're right it probably is the best fast food place for the childish palate. Apparently there's a lot of adults with it, so it works. I'm surprised they even get away with cole slaw tbh.

I think Raising Cane's entire menu is just a delivery system for Cane's Sauce. It's frowned upon to just get a large beverage cup, fill it with Cane's Sauce, and just drink it. However, shoveling that same amount of Cane's Sauce into your mouth using Chicken Fingers as scoops is entirely acceptable.

A friend of mine a long time ago worked there and she told me it was just ketchup, mayo, and black pepper. But I don't want to burst any Caniac bubbles, it's still a good sauce.

I have replicated it at home and had multiple people try it side by side with the real stuff from Canes and cannot tell the difference.
A friend of mine a long time ago worked there and she told me it was just ketchup, mayo, and black pepper. But I don't want to burst any Caniac bubbles, it's still a good sauce.

That will make it close.
The extra that makes it taste the same is Old Bay Seasoning.

If you want, i can get the ratios that I use that I have on my computer at home.

I asked them to do that for me by request a couple times. I love the Big Mac, but it really is a mess of a burger. If I ran the place, I'd just sell a Big Mac as a quarter pounder, no middle bun, plenty of sauce, pickle, onion, lettuce, you know. They tried to do that a few years back with the Grand Mac I think they called it. I'm really not sure why that didn't work, because the Grand Mac had the same weight of beef as a regular Big Mac, less carbs, easier to eat. Who knows... What I do know is it's been ages since I've had a Big Mac. Last time I got the meal it cost more than I can count with 10 fingers and I believe the burger on its own is ~ $8. I don't even want to know what a Double Big Mac costs...

Oh the good "old" days when you could buy one Big Mac for 4.29 and get one free. Wasn't even that long ago, sometime between 2015-2019.

Per the McD app, the Double Big Mac is 7.49 if I order it for pickup at the Gretna McDonalds. I thought it would be worse, actually.

I didn't care to install the app cause the last time I had McDonalds was about 6 months ago. Just guessing it costs more in Omaha than Gretna, cause yeah, no way the meal would have added up to almost $11 if the burger itself is only $5.89. Just going based on my last McD's experience.
