Visitors to Council Bluffs' riverfront will soon be able to travel along treetops to gain new perspectives on the Missouri River and Omaha's skyline.
A new riverfront walkway will connect the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge to a 138-foot-tall observation tower, thanks to $5 million in private funding announced this week.
The new addition to Tom Hanafan River's Edge Park is funded by local philanthropists with a lead gift made by Ty and Linda Borman, according to a news release. It aims to offer a "unique and immersive experience, bringing nature enthusiasts, families and adventure seekers together to enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors," the release states.
"We are thrilled to be part of the development of River's Edge Park," Ty Borman said in the release. "The treetop walk not only provides a new and exciting recreational experience but will also contribute to the overall well-being of our community by promoting outdoor activity and appreciation for nature."
The only thing I wanted to pull from this article is this:
The entire project is set to be completed by the end of 2025.
They are talking about the tower, walkway, etc. This project has had several different completion dates, but I am hoping this 2025 deadline is really it. River's Edge Phase 4 is near the top of my most anticipated.

With this and the Baby Bob getting completed, there will be so many pedestrian strolling opportunities in the core.
i can't wait- the tower will be fantastic and the walking path through the trees will be really great. I love that CB is leveraging more of the natural aspects and getting people down to the river that way. Between the two cities, there is some really fantastic park space to be had. You could make a full day of just parks and trails on the river front and all you'd need is a sack lunch
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (WOWT) - Plans for a Treetop Walk at Tom Hanafan River’s Edge Park are moving forward thanks to $5 million in private donations. The “unique and immersive” educational nature experience loop will start at Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, winding its way through about a half-mile of the park’s north side along elevated pathways, “offering visitors a bird’s-eye view of the Missouri River and the Omaha skyline.” The educational components of the trail will promote “environmental awareness and appreciation for the region’s biodiversity.” It will also connect to the an adventure course and 50-foot climbing wall at the 138-foot-tall MidAmerican Energy Adventure Tower observation point.
Rivers edge seriously needs this because even in a busy day at the Riverfront, Rivers Edge has very few people. It's time to show some love to the Iowa side too.
They do have some events planned for the CB side, I believe next Friday 3/15 there is a hot air balloon "glow" planned with food trucks. Should make for a nice picture with the downtown skyline in the background.
We still go on the Iowa side so our kids can ride their bikes and play in the large field. Whenever we are there, there's a decent amount of activity. I agree though, the River's Edge Phase 4 additions are going to totally change the energy there. I foresee similar reception of those additions as we've had with our Riverfront Parks where we're going to see multiple times more activity once they're complete. Hoping the tower and elevated walkway goes vertical this year!
Remember when the riverfront plans were announced years ago, there were all sorts of concepts for sports courts and outdoor rec south of the pedestrian bridge. Did all of those ideas just get scrapped? Is it because of hopes for the golf course develoment?

Are you referring to the pickle ball courts, that they said they were going to continue working on? Also the volleyball

That's good that they have them, I just usually don't know where they list their event schedules. I love going to the CB side too but currently Rivers edge is just a passthrough.
I know that planned activities help out but I rivers edge needs more permanent fixtures of things to do, to organically attract people to stay for a few hours. And the tower with all the climbing activities and treetop attractions are just the thing. I can already see the crowds of people forming in those attractions in the future too, the foot traffic between both sides of the river will be nice to see!

I was referring to all of the ideas presented for Rivers Edge South on the CB side — playground, dog park, sports courts, bike course, etc.
Looks like things are starting in full. Took a walk by today and saw a construction fence and trailer along with a steady stream of trucks and earth moving equipment going in and out. They were pushing quite a bit of dirt and laying down limestone roads.
