Really good show this week. The whole thing is solid but I would highly recommend listening to the part on the housing foundation of Sarpy County (starts at 11:16). The thread on Omaha's Brain Drain is locked so talking about it here. This seems to be a real smart move to help combat it. Props to the work being done on this in Sarpy County.

The amount of negativity of the Grow Omaha FB page makes Reddit look like a glee club. It's seems the majority of comments shat on about every project announcement or update. The least negative I've come across is the airport upgrade. There's a huge amount of miserable people here who don't want anything in Omaha...yet are excited to travel elsewhere? Maybe it's time for these poor s.o.b.s to move.

Obviously the streetcar is a hot button issue, but besides that, the apartment developments have been the real surprise. I never knew so many people hate apartments. Every single apartment project being on a big wave of anti apartment comments. One person called them “prison boxes”.

It’s bizarre. If you don’t like them, then don’t live there.

I have noticed the comments as well. It's always ridiculous complaints on stuff they don't understand. I have replied here and there, but I can post more to help out Grow Omaha. Help guide the conversation and educate the masses.

LOL, that could be said about a lot of things....

If you don't like suburbs, don't live there
If you don't like cars, don't own one
If you don't like fast food don't eat there
If you don't like strip clubs, don't frequent there

Unfortunately in our society, people cant just mind their own business... they need to tell everyone why they are right and you are wrong. And the social media just makes it worse.

We try to reply to a point, but sometimes its just pointless, people are only there to complain and not learn.

I forgot another good one lately... Someone way trying to tell use that Eppley will never be an international airport because our runways are too short... LOL!

Omaha Eppley "Airfield" 14R/32L = 9502 feet
DesMoines "International" 05/23 = 9004 feet

Nice try...

I agree - I've often wondered how there can be so many miserable people in this world... let alone just in the Omaha area (or at least those that leave negative comments on Omaha developments). Now I'll admit I'm not the one who is always jumping up and down with excitement about every single thing, however I do have an overall appreciation for seeing progress and new development.

Living out in far SW Omaha we don't have mature trees, Dundee-esque architecture, narrow streets, etc... and we moved out here for our own personal reasons and interests. I've lived in Dundee (for over 30 years of my life) and love midtown/downtown. But I like to see most of the changes being made.

Someone hit on the apartments - I feel it's almost universal across the city that there are a lot of vocal opponents of multi-tenant housing whether it's near 180th & Pacific or 50th & Dodge St. But people need places to live and I don't think any of what I've seen has looked god-awful.

My biggest surprise with all of the apartment developments are the prices. When I read "market rate" or average priced units the prices that get announced, IMO, don't align with market rate. But maybe that's me getting old... I just can't see a 2-bed apartment being worth almost $2000/month without a garage space.

I don't asthetically love every new apartment building either but I was surprised by the shat storm over the Nicholas Apartments. I thought the rendering looked better than average. Even more puzzling was the first comment on the 37 West Farnam update that called it "excessive and charmless".
