I traveled to Auburn in 2017 to witness the last total solar eclipse. I will never forget it. Just such a unique experience.

Looks more and more like almost the entirety of the path will be obscured by clouds. I may not be going to Carbondale, IL after all.

Staging here in Joplin over the weekend. It'll probably be a game time decision whether I go south toward Mansfield, AR or east to the West Plains area. Leaning toward West Plains in order to avoid the crowds from Branson, Fayetteville, etc.

Does anyone know where the best clear sky location spots will be in the south? Dallas or Little Rock, we are debating driving to either from OKC.

I remember seeing Bill Nye in the 2017 eclipse in Beatrice NE, it was surreal to see someone from my childhood tell us, that we could take off our eclipse glasses. He was literally a few feet away from me :thumb:

2024 Eclipse:
What to expect, from the awe-inspiring to the "very strange"

On Monday, April 8, a rare total eclipse of the sun will be viewable across a swath of 13 states. Correspondent David Pogue talks with amateur astronomer Ed Ting about what to expect during the minutes of totality; and with Cari White, chairman of the Eclipse Oversight Committee for Jonesboro, Arkansas, where the town is expecting to temporarily double in size due to eclipse tourism traffic.

Thank you gentlemen, and may your eyes fill with wonder as you look at the diamond halo with clear skies, wherever you may be.

Currently, the sun is rising here in Petit Jean state park Arkansas,
with clear skies . This is a glorious day.

We choose Jean Petit , since it's as close to the center of totality, and we'll get plenty of hiking too.

NASA flys jet through solar eclipse totality

NASA will also fly a jet plane to capture data along the path of solar eclipse totality NASA's WB-57 plane will launch from NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston and travel 460 mph through the path of totality. "It does that so that we can actually extend the length of those experiments in totality," Gina DiBraccio, the deputy director of Heliophysics at NASA's Goodard Space Flight Center, explained. Traveling this path at this speed will allow NASA to gather more data because the eclipse will last 25% longer for the plane. "You would think that it would extend a lot longer. It's actually only maybe two minutes or so," DiBraccio explained. Every second counts for scientists trying to observe this rare event. On the ground, totality will only last approximately four minutes. In the air, scientists hope to extend their totality by 25%.

Very nice. Cool to see the solar flares. I caught some back in 2017 and I was totally not expecting that.

Those solar flairs are those red things I was talking about seeing yesterday when we were talking about the snakes. They were visible by the naked eye.
