Bill Ranby just said he’d been so busy he didn’t think to role up his sleeves, just rolled them up now!

What a crazy day! This was the tornado that went through Lincoln. I was within about 100 yards of it.

This is going to be the worst one in Omaha since 75 I am thinking. Seeing some really bad pictures and videos from out west.

Re: 2024 Weather Thread
I was trying to figure that out, and I'd agree. We haven't had that big of a tornado since in my estimation. We really got lucky in Omaha proper, just thinking how bad it would have been if it was just a handful of miles east. Downtown also got very lucky, as that tornado that hit the airport was really close.iamjacobm wrote: Fri Apr 26, 2024 9:44 pm This is going to be the worst one in Omaha since 75 I am thinking. Re: 2024 Weather Thread
So sad for everyone affected by all of these storms. This definitely appears to be the worst tornadoes to hit metro Omaha since May 1975. Forty nine years go.

Re: 2024 Weather Thread
Bill Randby said it was the worst tornado outbreak in the 32 years he's coveres the weather here. Still don't even know the count yet, but several large and violent tornadoes hit within the metro and within arms reach. I feel like those in the heart of the city should count our blessings. Today could have been catastrophic.

Re: 2024 Weather Thread
So far, this is the worst damage I have seen. I'm guessing it will come in a High End EF3 or Low End EF4. Just uneducated opinion.

And just to go a little deeper on my previous post, EF5 tornadoes usually have the houses completely ripped off the foundation.
This photo here (From the tweet above) is the closest thing I have seen to to a house completely ripped clean off the foundation.

Yeah, I’d guess an EF-4 from the damage I’ve seen but until they do a survey, who knows.Brad wrote: Sat Apr 27, 2024 12:48 am And just to go a little deeper on my previous post, EF5 tornadoes usually have the houses completely ripped off the foundation.

Re: 2024 Weather Thread
I’d guess the Lincoln tornado as an EF-3 from what I saw and based on the motion. But if it didn’t hit anything at peak strength (which would be ideal for it not to obviously), then it may not get that rating…

Re: 2024 Weather Thread
I was in Nebraska City earlier today and got back into Omaha around 3pm and the sky to the west while driving on I-80 just had a certain look about it, all I can say is it didn’t look good. And then shortly after the tornado’s started.nativeomahan wrote: Sat Apr 27, 2024 12:24 am So sad for everyone affected by all of these storms. Re: 2024 Weather Thread
Your prognosis for the day turned out to be correct! Thank you for the updates.stormchaser wrote: Thu Apr 25, 2024 10:42 pm I should clarify, people should expect an outbreak like that and hope it doesn’t happen - so people are prepared at least.
All throughout the day I could hear my power supplies and breakers, clicking but never did I loose power.
Somehow the tornado that landed at Eppley Airfield, had quite an apetite for private jets and the General Aviation building.
That mile wide tornado is quite insane!
I hope you all are doing fine, after today's destruction.
Does anyone know how many tornadoes occurred in this outbreak? How many were in Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri?
Does anyone know if a similar storm situation, would occur tomorrow and Sunday?
Home sweet, home...Omaha!

Re: 2024 Weather Thread
I always thought tornado warnings were the most severe state (e.g. watch -> warning) but TIL about tornado emergencies, which are basically warnings on steroids.
Today we were in a tornado emergency, The sirens continuously went off. They normally shut off after a few minutes but every time they wound down, they started back up again within a few seconds. This happened at least five times where I am and I've never heard them go off so much in my life. I also received at least three emergency alerts on my phone with two of them happening within minutes of each other. And I got countless alerts from work (seriously, quit calling me in the middle of a major event).
You could tell they were really trying to get the message across to take shelter and that this wasn't a drill.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tornado_emergencyWikipedia wrote: A tornado emergency is an enhanced version of a tornado warning, which is used by the National Weather Service (NWS) in the United States during imminent, significant tornado occurrences in highly populated areas. Although it is not a new warning type from the NWS, issued instead within a severe weather statement or in the initial tornado warning, a tornado emergency generally means that significant, widespread damage is expected to occur and a high likelihood of numerous fatalities is expected with a large, strong to violent tornado.
