Union Omaha to host Sporting Kansas City in U.S. Open Cup



Union Omaha is set to host a Major League Soccer team for the first time. The team will host Sporting Kansas City in the Round of 32 of the U.S. Open Cup. The match will be held on May 7 or 8. It's the second match between the two teams, with Sporting K.C. winning the first matchup in 2022 6-0. On Thursday, the Nebraska Legislature also passed the Sports Arena Facility Financing Act, which will provide $25 million over 20 years toward Union Omaha's new downtown stadium.

Yep, that goes a long ways to help grow the sport.

I'm all for democratizing the sport and making it accessible to the masses. But, this single event may not be that moment. Attendance will be limited and it's proper to serve your actual paying season ticket member customers first. If anything is left, you can turn it over to the general public.

Ultimately, this should be a high demand event. What this actually does is drill home the point that a dedicated downtown professional soccer facility is absolutely necessary. It destroys the argument from the Her Derp masses that there are "more than enough facilities and a professional soccer stadium is not needed."

Want to use Werner Park? Too bad. Storm Chasers

Want to use Morrison Stadium? Too bad. State soccer

Want to use Charles Schwab Field? Too bad. Not feasible.

Union is actually really lucky that UNO has been such a good neighbor and has had the capacity to allow them to use their facility for multiple matches over the years. But, there is an end to where that is no longer viable and you're probably about to see that for a truly big match with a MLS club.

I think they should allow season ticket holders to at least buy the allotment they have now, if not double the number. A perk of being a season ticket holder and it's what Creighton has done during NCAA Tournament years when they are the host school. After that, open it to the general public, with the caveat you get first chance if you're willing to buy a full season package. After that, maybe half season. All else fails, they go online.

If you get shut out, there's always Stubhub. Good luck. You gotta pay to play. IF you're not willing to support the team as a plan holder, or buy into the idea of a new stadium, Stubhub is your spot. Should I get a prime chance at tickets to NCAA basketball when Creighton is hosting when I'm not a CU season ticket holder? Should I get first crack at a Omaha Supernovas championship match if I've never gone to a single event? Nope on both counts.

This is the absolute best advertising for the professional soccer facility that Union Omaha could have ever hoped for.

Also, I'm not even sure SKC would agree to play at Werner. It's honestly a safety hazard at times. The fresh sod the other night was starting to peel all around the pitchers mound. That barely flies in USL League One, and certainly doesn't fly anymore in MLS. The only spot that still utilizes a baseball stadium in MLS is NY at Yankee Stadium....and, that's supposed to be temporary and it's NY, so juice is worth the squeeze. Omaha is not NYC.

Probably a mix of things. I think they pushed it a bit with ticket prices. The timing wasn't the best either with state soccer going on at Morrison. I think also there was a narrative that with season ticket holders getting to buy extra tickets that the thought process was that this would not be an event for the casual fan.

It’s that time again – the U.S. Open Cup is back! This time is a little bit more special than almost any cup match in our history. We’ll compete for a spot in the Round of 16 as we host Sporting Kansas City of MLS in the second-ever edition of our I-29 rivalry.

PREVIEW: SPORTING KANSAS CITY
For the third time in this U.S. Open Cup run, Union Omaha will get a rematch. This time, though, Sporting Kansas City are the ones trekking up I-29. It’s the first time a MLS club has come to Nebraska for the beautiful game, and the Owls will be hoping it turns out quite ugly for SKC.

The last five matches for either team in the league (and league cup) are mirror images of each other: Union Omaha have won three and drawn two, while Sporting have lost three and drawn two. Both squads have seen offensive explosions of late. The MLS outfit recently had a streak snapped of six matches with at least two goals, while Union Omaha has put up six in the past week’s time. As you can imagine, the burden for this match may then fall on the defenses to hold their respective high-flying opponents at bay.

DIGITAL TICKETING
All pre-purchased tickets at Caniglia Field are digital and can be accessed through your Union Omaha Ticket Account. Tickets must be shown at the gate for entry – please have them pulled up on your phone when you walk to the entrance. Gates will open at 5:30 pm.

CLEAR BAG POLICY
Caniglia Field will enforce a Clear Bag Policy for this match to expedite your stadium entry experience and reduce security screening interactions.

One clear bag – either a one-gallon Ziploc style bag or the 12″ by 6″ by 12″ clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC bag – plus a small clutch approximately 4.5″ x 6.5″ in size.
Exceptions will be made for medically necessary items and/or diaper bags after proper inspection and screening.
Guests can carry in blankets and jackets as long as they are readily available for screening at entry.
PARKING AND TRANSPORTATION
Parking will be free to all in the garage and other lots around the UNO campus. The East Garage (P1 on the map below) will be the closest to park in for entering the stadium and will open at 4:30 p.m. The West Garage (P2 on the map below) will serve as free overflow parking should the East Garage fill up. TAILGATING
Alcohol will be sold at Caniglia Field beer garden bar on the North and South field-level concourses. Tailgating is permitted, however tailgating festivities cannot extend into additional parking spaces. Please use plastic cups for beverages, glass is not allowed.

All cooking equipment must be situated away from crowds, buildings, and combustible material. A minimum clearance distance of three feet from cooking equipment is required. No grills are to be left unattended at any time. Any equipment (chairs, tents, grills, etc.) left overnight will be removed. Trash and recycling bins will be available throughout UNO lots. Please dispose of all trash and recyclables properly.

CONCESSIONS
All concession locations will be operated without cash sales. Fans can purchase food and/or drinks at the locations noted with the green “C” on the above UNO Map. The SW concourse will feature a selection of food vendors, including Godfathers, High-Voltage BBQ and Chick-Fil-A.

TEAM STORE
A limited selection of Union Omaha merchandise, including our #NebraskaStrong tornado charity shirt, will be available at Caniglia Field on the northwest side of the field-level concourse.

Absolutely. Union played pretty well and gave themselves quite a few chances over the course of the game. Though, their finishing left something to be desired. Overall they should be proud of themselves despite the loss. They play pretty competitively against MLS clubs.
