Creighton just picked the leading scorer from Texas tech, Pop Isaacs. He will have 2 years of eligibility left. Averaged almost 16pts, 3rebs and 3.5 assts per game.

Should be a nice addition to fill the void from Trey leaving.

I think Texas Tech was probably happy to move on from Isaacs considering the off the court issues he had. They've been dismissed now (some have speculated there was a settlement to help that along). I noticed his finalists were all private schools. I wonder if the public ones shied away due to publicity/protests they might face.

I wonder too, but it was probably between Creighton and BYU and neither would want to mess around with a player if they having pending legal actions against them.

Kalkbrenner Enters 2024 NBA Draft, But Maintains Eligibility

In typically low-key fashion, we learned Tuesday morning that Ryan Kalkbrenner was an early entrant in the 2024 NBA Draft not via social media post from Kalkbrenner, but by a press release from the NBA itself. He’s one of 156 college players on the list, and will head to the NBA Draft combine in Chicago May 13-19 to get feedback on his draft prospects. Should he opt to withdraw and return for one more year at Creighton, he has until May 29 to make that decision; the draft begins on June 26.

He currently sits at 1,771 career points, good for seventh-most in program history. While Doug McDermott’s 3,150 is out of reach, if he returns and replicates his 2023-24 scoring output of 604 points, he would end his career with 2,375 and surpass everyone else.

3,150 Doug McDermott 2010-14
2,116 Rodney Buford 1995-99
2,110 Bob Harstad 1987-91
1,983 Chad Gallagher 1987-91
1,876 Bob Portman 1966-69
1,801 Kyle Korver 1999-03
1,771 Ryan Kalkbrenner 2020-Pres.

Despite Playing Just Two Years at Creighton,
Baylor Scheierman Leaves a Huge Legacy

In the era of immediate transfers and NIL, it’s increasingly unlikely for players to stick around for four years at one school. Creighton’s move to the Big East has also meant their rosters generally have more players likely to leave early for professional opportunities. That makes legacy discussions about all-time Bluejays much tougher than they were, say, a decade ago (like when we tackled the topic in our “What’s in a Number?” series).

A recent tweet from former Creighton Associate Athletic Director Kevin Sarver had an interesting way of thinking about it. He wrote that with Ryan Kalkbrenner’s return, he was the “best 5-year Creighton Bluejay for sure.” Then he listed the best players, in his estimation, sorted by the number of years they played at CU.

4-year: Doug McDermott, Kyle Korver
3-year: Paul Silas, Bob Gibson, Bob Portman
2-year: Baylor Scheierman
1-year: Justin Patton

The Jays senior said he's never had a full summer on campus to work on his game which is a huge reason why he's coming back for a fifth season of college basketball.

Creighton basketball drops Battle 4 Atlantis for NIL-driven Players Era Festival
The draw behind the change of plans: Each participating team’s NIL collective will receive $1 million, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander. Additional NIL — up to another $1 million, Norlander says — will be awarded to the winner.

“It’s not totally done,” coach Greg McDermott said when asked about the nonconference schedule earlier this week. “It’s probably the most difficult schedule we’ve ever played. So, we’ll find out what we’re made of early.”

Creighton Pulls out of Battle 4 Atlantis,
Will Instead Compete in “Players Era Festival”

Creighton’s 2024-25 non-conference schedule took a staggering left-turn over the weekend, when word leaked that they were buying their way out of the Battle 4 Atlantis tourney in favor of the NIL-driven Players Era Festival in Las Vegas. Staggering? You bet. The Bluejays pulled out of one of college basketball’s marquee Multi-Team Events, televised annually in prime TV windows on ESPN, in favor of one in its first year with no TV deal (yet), no decision on where it will be played in Las Vegas, and no decision on whether it will be a single eight-team tourney or two separate four-team events.

Sources told Norlander that if the event opts for two four-team tourneys, the brackets would likely be: Creighton (Big East), Oregon (Big Ten), San Diego State (Mountain West) and Texas A&M (SEC) in one, and Alabama (SEC), Houston (Big 12), Notre Dame (ACC) and Rutgers (Big Ten) in the other. The tourney is tentatively scheduled to tip on Tuesday, Nov. 26, with additional games on Nov. 27 and 29 sandwiched around Thanksgiving. And while broadcast rights haven’t been announced yet, it’s believed tourney organizers prefer streaming services (such as Prime Video or Peacock) versus linear television (like ESPN or FS1).

Creighton point guard Steven Ashworth returning for fifth and final season

Creighton's point guard is back for another season. Steven Ashworth announced Monday that he's returning for his fifth and final season. He made an instant impact in his first season with the Bluejays, averaging 11 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists per game. Earlier this month, center Ryan Kalkbrenner announced that he was returning for another season as well.

Creighton University to rename Championship Center
after men's basketball coach Greg McDermott

Men's basketball coach Greg McDermott will have a building on Creighton's campus with his name on it. The athletic department announced that the Championship Center will be renamed on June 20 as the McDermott Center, at the request of the Scott family. The $13 million, 42,000-square-foot facility opened almost 10 years ago. A gift from longtime Creighton supporters Ruth and Bill Scott, as part of more than 500 donors, helped lead the building's construction, the university said.

The Scott family requested the building be named after McDermott, a longtime friend of Ruth and the late Bill Scott, according to the athletic department. “Our family is very proud of Coach McDermott and his positive impact on the men's basketball program, players and the entire Creighton community,” John Scott, Bill and Ruth’s son, said in a statement. “Having his name on the program's practice facility honors this legacy.”
