MIght have been the 100 degree heat, or bands playing in parking lots with literally NOBODY watching them. Red Sky was an epic fail.

Keeping a couple of bands inside the stadium might work out better, but August in Nebraska is going to be hot. And yes, I am going to Pink a week later...
I’m talking about doing anything, there could have consistently been solo concerts there all these years, it doesn’t have to be a festival.

Agreed, the lack of push for that usage is a glaring miss.

While I agree with the sentiment regarding atmosphere, I'm speaking specifically from a 'viewing the game' pov. I enjoy Werner as well, but it's too bad that it isn't as good for them (I understand why it isn't) because I really enjoy the park itself. That's all

Glad to see some more use for the stadium.
If you’re driving down 10th St., and you’re slow down and look north west from Mike Fahey you can see inside the stadium and they have started building the stage.

Fans of Pink, Brandi Carlile brave the heat at Omaha stadium concert

When tickets went on sale for the Summer Carnival Tour stop at Charles Schwab Field, fans of musician P!NK were expecting a hot show. But no one could have planned for the baking temperatures that kept Monday’s outdoor stadium show cooking well into the night. Thousand from across the spectrum of fans, many dressed in pink and yet still dressed for the heat. With advance notice from MECA that empty water bottles were encouraged and could be filled at the watering station’s inside, plastic backpacks and carry-alls were jammed.

Forget the NHL, what about MLB? Taken from the November 2023 MECA board minutes (yet another possible source for rumors and news):
A follow-up was conducted with the D1 Baseball Committee to discuss the possibility of Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Oakland A’s temporarily being hosted at Charles Schwab Field Omaha (CSFO). It is unclear when a decision will be made as Oakland’s Mayor Sheng Thao recently wrote a letter to MLB requesting they not approve the move to Las Vegas by the Oakland A’s. If the move is approved, the A’s aren’t expected to play in Las Vegas until 2028.

Highly unlikely. MLB teams are the most challenging for a city to maintain given the number of home games they play. And there are many other untapped markets the MLB could go to before Omaha.

I’ve been thinking about this possibility as well for a temporary relocation while their new stadium gets built. However, from everything I’ve read they’re looking at AAA stadiums in Las Vegas and Salt Lake City or trying to amicably come to an agreement with Oakland to extend the current lease that expires after this year. So short answer, not likely, unfortunately.

If the plan would be to just play at the existing field for a few years, then it could make some sense. CSF is the largest baseball stadium in the country that doesn't host an MLB team. The next closest ballpark is 2/3 the size. Other cities may have a better market, but would they have the capacity to host? (without spending a bunch of money, that is) I doubt cities would want to spend a bunch of money on upgrades if the team would only be there for a few years.

Omaha would be a pretty solid temporary host for the A's. There'd be home series against the Twins, Royals, Yankees, Red Sox that would all sell out, and a 50/50 shot of getting Cardinals/Cubs/Dodgers home series. One of the bigger issues would actually be drumming up excitement for the 26 home games against AL West divisional foes.

CSF can probably offer the best overall stadium and best terms/revenue opportunities compared to any other option out there. Location is a big drawback. And if I were the A's, I'd just plunk down in the Vegas AAA stadium because I'd want to start building out the fanbase there.

Whether it's the A's or any other MLB team it would ideal at least to get CSF to host even some exhibition games. IIRC Ricketts attempted this with the Cubs in the early days of the stadium. Hosting some games(with great attendance) would go along way with keeping Omaha at least in the conversation for future major league sports even if the likelihood of getting a permanent team is still far off. This seems to be a compelling factor with Salt Lake being first in line for the NHL.

Yeah that isn't talking about maintaining an MLB team at all. It is about having an MLB temporarily play some games in Omaha on a short-term basis while a new stadium is being built in say Las Vegas and presumably being kicked out of the old stadium in the meantime in Oakland.

The thing is and in either expansion case presumably a AAA team ultimately moves if the A's relocate there, but they still have farily extensive schedules until they do. In Vegas' case the AAA team outright owns the stadium. CSF is appealing because of its low utility and the fact it is directly owned by the city. MECA presumably wasn't talking the D1 baseball committee if there hadn't already been discussions about the possibility of this with the A's.

Appreciate everyone's thoughts. While the temporary stadium situation is still in the air for the A's, the most recent reporting quotes the commissioner stating they are likely staying in the West. I do wonder where this conversation with the NCAA went, if there was one, if they would be willing to share the stadium. Another pro sports pipe dream, but I thought it was an interesting tidbit from MECA.

They'd probably be wise to move it around a bit if it came to it. I don't think it makes a lot of sense for an AL West or NL West team to be playing their full home schedule in the Central time zone. I also doubt someone like Sacramento AAA team* would be thrilled by sharing a stadium with an MLB team for an entire season for a year either as it would crater their attendance. The NCAA has been anal about hosting other events downtown and field condition so I'm doubting they were thrilled about the possibility of this either. Something like playing a portion of the schedule mainly against Central and East teams here and West teams in Sacramento could make some sense.

*Similarly I'm doubting the Stormchasers would be thrilled about an MLB playing any significant number of games in Omaha either.

I think it would be cool if we even got a few games with the A's during their 3 year wait.

That's a good point about the Stormchasers, but maybe with a pro team in town temporarily, it would get more people interested in our AAA team or baseball generally. I know it doesn't really work in economics, but it'd be a trickle down effect.

I don't care if it's the A's or any other MLB team. An exhibition game should absolutely be a yearly event tied to the CWS. How this hasn't been a thing for years is beyond me.

Not an exhibition game rather a regular season game played in Omaha like we had in 2019.

Does anyone know of a ball field that has gotten rid of most of their surface lots, and are using parking garages?

There are so many surface lots around Charles Swabb (I miss saying TD Ameritrade), if doable it would be nice to see most of these surface lots go and turned into possible parking garages with mixed use or entertainment options in this area; serving the field and CHI. As well as serving as a bridge to capitol district.

The Cardinals have used garages as the primary parking method since the ‘60s or so. There is one surface lot they own that they built with the current stadium in 2006 that they have slowly been redeveloping into an entertainment district but it’s not really a significant amount of parking.

Cardinals is surrounded by big garages and surface lots with 2 blocks of development bridging. Nats and Padres are probably some of the best examples.

In St Louis we did do surface parking.

Went to a game in Minneapolis and they had a really big garage close to the stadium. Used a parking app and it was only about $10 to park.

I also believe the Royals/Storm Chasers would have to waive territorial rights. if it was 3 full years, they'd probably say no. But, a split scenario might work. I've been told the territorial rights are a real thing, and bindgin. Why the A's could never build in San Jose. the Giants held territorial rights and wouldn't waive it. KC has claimed Omaha for decades.

What I'd like to see is KC commit to more games in conjunction with the CWS, even if Omaha had to use something like this as a bargaining chip. BUt, if they wanted to put some A's games here a year, it wouldn't be a burden to the Royals.

It's a long shot but Omaha has been mentioned in multiple articles as a possible spot for the Rays to play until they get their stadium fixed. I think the Rays most likely play at the Yankee's spring training stadium, or at Disney where the Braves used to have Spring Training, but who knows?

Most of the other stadiums they mention particularly those closer to the area have capacities well below the average attendance(16,500-17,700) the last two years. I can imagine staying closer to Tampa/St. Pete would still be ideal, but it would be cool if they would play a limited number of games at the Schwab. Say for example, games with opponents that would bring a greater draw of attendance.

I think they just need a place to play. Anywhere outside Tampa isn't going to draw any homers. Not like they're America's team or anything. I don't think the team benefits any to draw a bigger audience if the "home series" is against the Royals, Rockies, or Cubs. Royals would probably be sellouts and not in a good way for the Rays. LOTS more of those fans around here than Rays. It would be cool to host a major league team for a while though.
