Nebraska's conference opponents announced:

Lincoln – The Big Ten Conference unveiled the home and road matchups for the 2024-25 men’s basketball season.

With 18 teams following the additions of Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington, the Big Ten schedule features three double-play opponents and one game apiece against the remaining 14 conference schools to make up the 20 Big Ten contests. Nebraska’s double-play opponents for the upcoming season are Iowa, Maryland and Ohio State.

Schedule dates and start times will be available closer to the start of the season.

The 10 Big Ten home games include a visit by Big Ten Tournament champion Illinois and UCLA’s first trip to Lincoln since the 1955-56 season. NU will also play host to postseason qualifiers Iowa, Minnesota and Ohio State, as well as Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Rutgers and USC.

The Huskers’ 10-game road slate includes seven matchups against teams that reached postseason play a year ago, including NCAA runner-up Purdue. In addition, Iowa, Michigan State, Northwestern, Oregon, Ohio State and Wisconsin all played in the postseason last year. NU will also travel to Maryland, Penn State and Washington, marking the first road matchup with the Huskies since 1976.

I’m not quite sure what you mean. That is On3’s transfer portal class rankings. Not saying they are going to be correct but that is where they have Nebraska currently.

Yeah having listend to 1620 for the past few weeks for updates this was one of 3 scenarios they've talked about for Mast. Have the surgery and sit out a year on medical redshirt, decide to stay and play through it (with treatment if possible) or go pro in Europe.

Would have loved to had him this season but long term, this is best for him and Nebraska. Sounds like it close to a certainty that he comes back in a year (probably to show he is full healthy and can play a full season).

Lincoln - Nebraska basketball spent two months plugging roster holes with a point guard, a big man who can shoot and pass, a rim protector and two 3-point shooters, but it still lacked a power forward. The Huskers got what they needed Tuesday. Former UCLA forward Berke Buyuktuncel committed to NU, likely completing the Huskers’ offseason makeover.

The 6-foot-9 sophomore from Turkey spent one season with the Bruins, averaging 4.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in 16.2 minutes per game. He shot 29.7% from 3-point range and 62.8% on free throws. His season high was 13 points against Stanford on Jan. 3. Buyuktuncel (pronounced buh-YOOK-toon-jell according to UCLA’s website) was solid on the offensive glass but posted a relatively low defensive rebounding rate for his size. His mark of 12.1% was lower than that of Nebraska point guard Jamarques Lawrence.

New Husker basketball commit adds powerful forward to Nebraska's roster



Nebraska basketball added a power forward to its roster on Tuesday. UCLA transfer Berke Buyuktuncel is a 6-foot-9 sophomore from Turkey. As a true freshman, he averaged 4.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per game, shooting 38.5% from the field and 29.7% on 3-pointers.

Getting Berke I think changes the narrative on the offseason. Started strong with Brice Williams and Juwan Gary. Then took a little hit on a couple of the transfers. Then we got a couple much needed big men to add. Followed by the loss for next season of Mast (though not completely unexpected). Seemed like at best we treaded water compared to this year's team. I think now with the added depth up front and other additions, we might be ahead for where I expected Nebraska to be. The skill sets of these players seem to match up well with Hoiberg's system.

JOSIAH ALLICK AND TRISTON SIMPSON JOIN HUSKER MEN’S BASKETBALL STAFF


Nebraska men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg announced Wednesday that Josiah Allick and Triston Simpson will join the Husker basketball staff as graduate assistants for the upcoming season.

Allick will serve as a graduate assistant this season, as he rehabs following ankle surgery. He helped Nebraska to one of its most successful seasons in program history in 2023-24. The Lincoln, Neb., native played in 33 games, including 27 starts, in his lone season at Nebraska and averaged 7.3 points on 55 percent shooting and 5.4 rebounds per game. Allick led NU in field goal percentage and totaled a pair of double-doubles, including a 14-point, 11-rebound effort in the Huskers’ NCAA Tournament game against Texas A&M. He was recognized for his contributions on and off the court, as Nebraska’s Sportsmanship Award nominee in men’s basketball.

Allick, who also played at New Mexico and Kansas City, helped his teams win 91 games during his career, including 64 games over the last three seasons. Both Nebraska and UMKC posted their highest win totals in the last 30 years with Allick on the roster. During his collegiate career, Allick totaled 1,246 points and 781 rebounds in 136 career games, including 111 career starts.

Allick, who graduated from New Mexico in 2023, is working on his master’s degree in business administration at Nebraska.

“We are excited to keep Josiah around our program,” Hoiberg said. “Everyone saw the contributions he made as a player here with his work ethic, selflessness and leadership abilities. He is an outstanding communicator who relates exceptionally well with people, and his experiences will help our current players as we continue to build a winning culture.”

Simpson returns to his hometown after spending the 2023-24 as an assistant at Indian Hills Community College. He helped the Warriors to a 29-6 record, North Central District and Region XI titles before the program reached the NCJAA semifinals. Two players earned NJCAA All-America honors while seven players earned all-region accolades under his tutelage.

“We are pleased that Triston has joined our staff,” Hoiberg said. “He had a chance to get into coaching at the junior college level and helped Indiana Hills to the national tournament last year. Triston was a multi-year starter at point guard at South Dakota and played professionally for a few years before getting into coaching, and that experience will help him as he continues his adjustment to the coaching ranks.”

Simpson played collegiately at South Dakota, where he was a three-year starter at point guard. A two-time All-Summit League honoree, he played 124 games for the Coyotes, totaling 1,193 points and nearly 400 assists. He averaged double figures in each of his final two seasons, including a career-high 14.0 points per game in 2018-19. During his four seasons at USD, the program won 81 games, including a 26-9 mark in 2017-18.

Following his collegiate career, Simpson played overseas professionally for three seasons, including stops in Iceland, Argentina, Cyprus and most recently in Estonia, where he played for Tallinna Kalev in 2022-23.

Simpson received a bachelor's degree in Sports Management from South Dakota in 2020.

Both Allick and Simpson are Lincoln natives who played at Lincoln North Star High School and for Coach Tony Quattrocchi. Allick and Simpson will join Nihilo Ibarra and Justin Moore as graduate assistants for the upcoming season.

Nebraska basketball hosted one of their summer workouts on Tuesday. Ahead of the 2024-25 season here are a lot of new faces in the building.

On Tuesday, two of the veterans returning, Brice Williams and Juwan Gary, spoke with the media. The two seniors both decided to come back to Nebraska for their last year of eligibility in a decision that the pair said they made together after last year's NCAA Tournament loss.

"I just told him, like, you know, why not here? I feel like we've got the best coach in the Big Ten. I feel like we got one of the top coaches in the country for sure. We got the best coaching staff, fan base, you know, all around community," Gary said. "I want to finish my college career here."

Williams felt a similar way after the Huskers' loss to Texas A&M in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

"I feel like it's unfinished business," Williams said. "I'm here for a reason. I want to be here, and Juwan felt the same way. We both wanted to leave our mark on the program, and we've built so many relationships here and I felt like this was the place to do it and so did Juwan."

Gary and Williams are expected to be the two veteran leaders for the Husker this upcoming season. The Big Red will be without senior forward Rienk Mast due to a season-ending injury.

Non conference schedule:
Lincoln – Two matchups against perennial NCAA Tournament teams and the program’s first appearance in the Diamond Head Classic in a decade highlight the Nebraska men’s basketball non-conference schedule released today.

The Huskers, coming off a 23-11 season and a trip to the 2024 NCAA Tournament, will play five of their 11 non-conference games on the road or at neutral sites, including a matchup with defending WCC regular-season champion Saint Mary’s in Sioux Falls on Nov. 17 and the annual matchup with Big East contender Creighton in Omaha on Nov. 22.

Nebraska will play three games in the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii over Christmas week with games set for Dec. 22, 23 and 25. The eight-team field includes Charlotte, College of Charleston, Hawai’i, Loyola Chicago, Murray State, Oakland and Oregon State. The bracket will be announced later this summer, as Nebraska will play in the Diamond Head Classic for the first time since 2014.

“This schedule will help us get ready for Big Ten Conference play,” Nebraska Coach Fred Hoiberg said. “Playing at Creighton and against St. Mary’s in a neutral site will give our team two early tests that we can learn a lot from, and the Diamond Head Classic field will give us three more games against high quality competition away from home before we resume conference play in January.”

The Huskers will open the 2024-25 season with three straight home games, including the season opener against UT-Rio Grand Valley (Nov. 4) before taking on a Bethune Cookman (Nov. 9) team that won 17 games and played in the College Basketball Invitational in 2024. The three-game homestand concludes against Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 13.

As previously announced. Nebraska will travel to Sioux Falls, S.D, for a matchup with Saint Mary’s on Nov. 17 before the annual matchup against Creighton on Nov. 22 in Omaha. Following those two contests, Nebraska will return home for a pair of non-conference games before Big Ten play starts in early December.
NU will host South Dakota on Wednesday, Nov. 27, in the first meeting between the two programs since the 2021-22 season. The Coyotes return three starters and four of their top six scorers from last year, including Kaleb Stewart (15.6 ppg) and Paul Bruns (10.2 ppg).

North Florida went 16-16 and finished fifth in the Atlantic Sun Conference with a 9-7 mark. The Ospreys have increased their win total in each of the past five seasons under Matthew Driscoll and return a pair of double-figure scorers, including sixth-year senior Nate Lliteras, as the Seward, Neb., native averaged 10.4 ppg in 2023-24.

After the trip to Hawaii for the Diamond Head Classic, the Huskers will close non-conference action against Southern on Dec. 30. The Jaguars went 18-14 and finished third in the SWAC last season.

Nebraska will also have one home exhibition game, as the Huskers will host Grand Valley State on Sunday, Oct. 27. Start times and broadcast information for the Huskers’ non-conference games will be set later this summer.
