You've got, for example, Tesla owners who have "drank to the Kool-Aid" and will vehemently defend EVs. Acknowledging none of the problems, short-comings, gotchas, or the like. They spent a lot of money on their top-of-the-line EV and they're not about to hear it was anything less than the best decision they ever made. Even if they regret their decision to buy one they're not about to admit that to the EV-hating crowd.

Then, you've got the anti-EV crowd that likes to pounce on every little mention of EV problems as if it's proof that EVs are a failed idea. It's like they WANT EVs to fail. I'm not really sure what their motivation for that is. Don't like EVs? Buy an ICE. What do you care who has an EV? I don't understand why EV ownership is something to come after people over. To each their own.

Point being, the fact that EVs are so divisive is just absurd.
I'm not sure I've ever posted in the CB forum, but I immediately thought of these as it pertains to the conversation:

South park always predicts the future and the fact this is like 15 years old already has me rolling over dying 🤣

I think there's three camps...

The Elon Musk disciples with a cult-like following, and then EV fans in general. The disciples are the ones who will not tolerate any criticism of electric vehicles (or crypto, for that matter).

Personally, I think EV's seem great except for long road trips. Turning 5/10 minute pit stops into half hour recharging stops every 200 miles is an annoyance, especially when you also have to look up a charging station, knowing that might be your only possible charging spot. For shorter trips or around town, the opposite is true. Never have to gas up (or wait in a 20 minute line at Costco.) Hybrids are now in the sweet spot; you can get ridiculous gas mileage (50-60 mpg) without ever having to worry about where the next charger is.

Completely agree here. There are some companies now working on stations that replace the whole battery in an EV in about 5 minutes. The old battery is then recycled. Still in its infancy and, as with current EV technology, it would require a massive infrastructure investment. But at least it's an option that helps with the situation you're describing.

Here again, what's overlooked in this charge time debate.. is that local charging for anyone with a home charger takes -0- time compared to 5 minutes every two weeks at the gas station (not to speak of the unpleasant experience of filling up in extreme weather such as what we've just endured). I take maybe two long driving trips per year. The extra time I spend charging is easily offset by the time I no longer spend locally at the gas station. Not to speak of extra time waiting for oil changes, other regular service, no longer required with my EV. It all adds up. It's just a redistribution of time where EV's are concerned.

Why don't people ever consider renting an ICE vehicle for the once or twice a year they actually drive more than 200 miles in a day?

Put that wear and tear on Hertz for $25/day and unlimited miles.

We’ve done this several times for road trips. Its such an easy hack.

I've never felt the need to deliberately charge my Tesla for 30 minutes during a road trip. We've got a Tesla and an ICE car and sure, the Tesla requires a bit more planning i.e. I basically know where I'm stopping before I go as opposed to the ICE car. With that said, it isn't that much of an inconvenience; to the point that the ICE car we kept for road trips doesn't go on road trips. The Tesla does.

Grand Opening is Saturday, July 19th from 1pm-6pm. If you have not seen the Cybertruck, original Roadster or experienced Full Self Driving(FSD), I would recommend checking it out.

They will be doing demo drives of FSD and I would highly recommend it, especially for the Streetcar people :D

I'm surprised tesla can stay relevant with all the legitimate competition they have now. The cult following i suppose.

I've been seeing a couple Cybertrucks around town...

Listen, for many years now, a lot of cars...especially those in the CUV section were all looking the same so I would have appreciated a new perspective on car design, but the Cybertruck ain't it!

The backend view of that thing is ugly as sin. I don't know how you can't feel embarrassed driving it. You know when you're watching a tv show and you feel cringey just watching it, that's how I feel about the Cybertruck.

I have seen one driving between Elkhorn and Gretna fairly often over the six weeks or so. It must have a schedule that is similar to mine, and on my way home from work, I see it. One day, it was directly behind me in the stop-and-go-through-the-lane construction

I've seen them a couple times around central Omaha. Not sure if it's the same one or multiple, but you got it right, they are ugly as sin. I feel like it's more of a "look at me, I drive a Tesla" thing than any real meritable planet saving act. The Ford F-150 Lightning does just the same, but it doesn't say "Look at me".

I don't see the problem - I've always wanted a door stop with wheels that shows fingerprints worse than our SST refrigerator.

To each their own, they say. But I personally I would never drive that, even if someone gave it to me. And I say that with 100% certainty (personally, I wouldn't buy any Tesla, but this is by far the most unattractive attempt at making a vehicle they have put forth).

It's like the Cybertruck was designed by a child. I feel bad for the engineers that were forced to make this ugly, flawed toy "truck".

The interior irks me, it's so cheap and made of cheap plastics, with no attempt in using premium materials. The flimsy cheap looking rear view mirror is useless, when the Cybertruck is in power saving mode (horizontal cover closes, no visibility)

Also they used the cheapest grade of stainless steel and there were reports of several Cybertrucks rusting, though I don't hear anymore.

The 11,000 towing capacity, has an asterisk. You can only tow for 30mins before the battery needs to be recharged

Some people just love standing by a charger and waiting as they get a measly 240 mile driving range.

1. The Engineers loved it. First major vehicle with steer by wire, 48 volts, exoskeleton...
2. You do not need the mirrors. The side mirrors are even made to be removed. When you have a massive screen you don't need mirrors. Lots of cars have this feature but built into where the mirror is.
3. The stainless was created by them and is unique. When you are doing the same with a stainless rocket that flew around the world, I would trust their judgement on that. The rust is the same as every car has. I could find the same on 100% of the vehicles in any parking lot.
4. Towing is better than that. I would use it to tow a boat under 200 miles vs an F250 anyday. One is going to cost $50 and the other is $10. Even if I stopped for lunch and charge for 30 minutes, I saved $40 to pay for that meal.
5. Range is 300 miles and 90% of charging is at home. The new cars that start at $35,000 get 350+ miles.

1. Engineers that work at any employer will likely "love" what they make if they like their jobs. I'm sure Boeing engineers love their ideas as well - doesn't mean they're all foolproof and perfect.
2. We've already seen electric vehicles lose complete power, therefore their ability to drive. If you lose power, your mirrors won't work (but I suppose if the car isn't drivable it's a moot point).
3. Stainless steel (and any other steel vehicle that's less than 12 months old for that matter) shouldn't be rusting if it's engineered and manufactured properly. If it does, there's something wrong and should definitely be looked at as a production failure.
4. Tesla has been caught lying about their towing capacity - likely so have most other vehicle companies. I don't think most people in the market for an all-electric vehicle buy it for the purpose of towing a 6000lb camper 400 miles in a single trip (I'm thinking the Tesla couldn't do that without stopping for a full charge that would certainly require more than 30 mins).
5. 300 miles not towing anything - this is probably accurate. But you can buy several other vehicles for significantly less money that could do the same or better.

I'd say the majority of vehicles on the road built after the year 2000 likely has "space shuttle" technology onboard. Doesn't mean they're all great.

Everyone can buy what they wish - I'm not impressed with this vehicle and certainly not a fan of Elon Musk. He may be a genius and have great inventions, but at the same time he also wants to dig giant holes underground that cost hundreds of millions of dollars and supports Donald Trump (who wants to get rid of virtually all electric vehicle incentives and programs that are designed to better the technology overall as well as the electric vehicle industry).

I saw the first parked cybertruck in downtown yesterday.
Even in person it's such an ugly "truck", the paneling and gaps look bad. This particular Cybertruck has the $6,500 black wrap offered from Tesla. It still doesn't change how ugly the cybertruck is.

The "spaceship" interiors of all Teslas are all exactly the same, with cheap plastic materials, that even a cheap regular car can exceed. The "spaceship" interior is just a code word for, we are cutting corners and removing all the expensive clusters.

Tesla have always had quality control issues,
The Tesla designs of the other Teslas look like Mazdas and the designs, put me to sleep.

Some people love waiting next to a charger for an embarrassing average mileage range of 250. It's fine if that's how they value their time.
I'll just take 3 minutes and fuel for 400 range and go to any gas station.

General Motors and Toyota (worlds largest car manufacturer) have spoken, they will not pursue EVs because EVs are not profitable, despite all the gov and tax payers subsidies.

Image

EVs are heavily subsidized and the bill goes to the tax payer and utility companies.

Why do we not pursue passenger train networks, instead of wasting tax payers money for yet another duplicate infrastructure that uses dirty electricity?

I think the only thing Elon Musk has done that's good. Is get rid of the FBI and Fed infestation working at Twitter. It was sickening how the gov was colluding and spying on users, including their private DMs. Twitter was working with the gov to restrict the freedom of people.
Now X is free, there's actually dialogue, it is the only free platform. Youtube and Google plus all Meta are censored.

Not everyone has room for a personal charger. Also does it charge in 3 minutes with full battery charge, nope. Again it's fine if some like to use their valuable charging with an embarrassing range of 250 mile average, for 30 mins.

I get your point and to each their own.

If you want to be serious, though, don't tell me the plug-in process is a three-second activity.

We're a two vehicle family. It makes all the sense in the world for one of us to get an EV but we make only one long range trip over 3-4 hours away a year and we would use the ICE for that. Knowing my routine and capability for charging, I would probably never have to use a public charger. With a level 2 installed at home and the ability to charge at work, I honestly can't wait to get one, but my oldest child will inherit my current ICE in a few years so I must wait.

Visited this new Tesla facility when checking out cars last week. First off, really nice building.

Secondly, an amazingly different car shopping experience - as per Iowa regs these guys aren't actually a dealer - just educational consultants (and you order direct thru Telsa), a delivery center, and service center.

Sign up for a test drive online, show up, let them get a copy of your license, get a 10-15 min tutorial on the car, and then off you go alone on a test drive for up to 30 mins, and then they'll answer questions about the car, or buying process when you get back.

Few things from someone that has actually driven full electric for over a decade:

1) Tesla's post-purchase customer service, while once absolutely amazing, has turned to utter shite. You can not get a human on a phone to save your life during a standard service process (recall, whatever). They want you to use the app - which would be great if they updated you or responded to you in any way. For this reason alone I will never buy a Tesla again. There are any number of major manufacturers building wonderful EVs that actually understand customer service.

I will say I have never had anything that is a part of the EV platform go wrong with my EVs (save for the early bleeding edge one I had, and I'll chalk that up to first gen learning curve).

2) As long as you aren't someone that regularly drives more than 200 miles in a day - which 99% of people who drive are not - range is a non issue for newer electric vehicles. I would suggest that if you only take a road trip peridocially, the national infrastructure is built out well enough for only some minor inconvenciences. This may or may not be a deal breaker for you.

I, personally, would not particulaly enjoy owning an electric vehicle as my only vehicle if I did not have the means to charge at home on a 220. That's a matter of personal preference based on convenience, but certainly not a deal breaker depending on where and how you drive.

You can get an electrician to install a 220 in your garage for maybe $1500 in a matter of hours. Ergo, this argument is largley nonsense if you have the financial means to buy an EV and own a house. (Your landlord would probably even allow you to pay to install one if you rent, or work it into the rent.). You can put somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-25 miles of range per hour on a standard residential 220, meaning almost every commuter in the country can recharge their daily commute thricely each night while they sleep.

3) Three seconds to plug/unplug your car might be hyperbole. It probably takes more like 7-10 seconds, depening on if you have both hands free and how neatly you hang the cord on the wall. Sometimes I forget to unlock the car first and I have to dig for my fob, and it takes maybe 12-14 seconds.

4) The vast majority of the arguments against EV ownership come from people that have never driven nor would ever consider driving an EV, and are willfully misinformed about the platform. They are the same people that |expletive| about literally every change ever. Ignore them. They are idiots. Also, don't ask them about vaccines or crypto or trickle-down economics.

Figure out your driving use case and see if an EV works for you.

Do you realize the opportunity cost of 12-14 seconds???

12 seconds per day times five times a week times 50 weeks per year... thats LITERALLY fifty minutes per year. That's almost an hour annually one could be putting towards an MBA.

In 30 years you could get your credit hours in. But you'd need another 30-50 years for all the studying.

I'll have all that free time to study when I'm recharging on all the road trips I'll be taking. I'll literally be studying 30 hours a day while charging.

Thank you for your informative EV report! In my mind, inability to charge at home is the biggest obstacle to EV adoption. Anyone who lives in an apartment, large condominium building, or other high density housing simply will not be able to charge their vehicle at home.

It’s not exactly difficult or overly expensive to retrofit a common area garage for individual 220s for each stall, or to have a couple charging stations available. Nor is it uncommon for new construction to include them.

The fatalist “oHmYgOdWhErEdOiChArGe?!?!?1111” derp is just nonsense.

A popular EV in China is made by a company called NIO. They have stations spread around the country for battery swapping. My in-law has one and it only took about three minutes to swap the battery for a fully charged one. I wonder if this would ever become popular here in the US.

Oh no, it takes 30 minutes to charge. Feck, get a burger or something. I’m not interested in Tesla myself, but 30-minute charges isn’t one of my reasons.

I don't know why we haven't seen states implement electric 'road trips' where towns off the interstate can actually draw people in and offer a spot for charging. With the gas stations right off the interstate a lot of smaller communities would be able to bring people in and have them either walk around a couple shops, get coffee, or have lunch while their vehicle charges. It would bring back some of the fun of road trips and incentivize people to explore off the beaten path a little bit.

Well... One of the things states have to do is use the money given to them first to build them... https://flatwaterfreepress.org/nebraska ... ntil-2026/

I can literally fuel my car in under 5 minutes, even on a Costco gas full of cars lining up to gas and I get double the range that an electric car would get.
Maybe some people's time is worth wasting 30 minutes at a time to charge their low range electric car and that's fine too, its not my time being wasted.

We took my buddies EV on a road trip last winter. Took under 20 minutes to get to 80 percent. We'd just hit the bathroom, grab a snack and pretty much be good to go. The hotels all had charging stations for free that we'd charge it in full overnight. Was nice not wracking up those gas bills at fill up.
