I juggle with Don & Millies, Bronco's, and Runza. They're all good, and in the same realm IMO, but if I had leave my house right now and choose where I'd go to get that kind of fast food burger, it would be Don & Millies, then Bronco's, then Runza.

Boy i haven't had don & millies in a minute...

Bronco's is good too, they have really good chicken.

If i lived in Omaha, i'd certainly have to reconsider my priority :)

In addition to trying Hawaiian Bros, we were able to get to Don & Millies for cheese frenchies and Runza for some runzas. All delicious!

It's probably been 10+ years by now. But it was by far my favorite. It was like a hot ham and cheese sandwich inside the super healthy, fried up outside! Seriously, it was amazing.

What they would do is around lent they'd drop the ham option and change it to tuna. My wife is Catholic - totally understand the idea of adding the tuna option, but why get rid of ham because of lent? It's not like they stopped selling hamburgers as well during this time - it didn't make sense to me (and I never ate the tuna option).

In any case, one year after lent ended the ham was simply not brought back. Not sure why. I can imagine it has to do with sales (or lack thereof). But for the cost of the cheese only version (about $10 for the meal I think now, just like everything else) I feel like it's a bit of a rip. If they still had the ham option it would probably be another $1, but when I want something for lunch or dinner I feel like a cheese sandwich is something you make at home. Of course it has the breading, it's fried, etc. but you probably see my point.

In any case, they need to bring the ham and cheese version back.

Hmm, yeah that's a bit of a strange logic they had there. Why replace the ham for tuna when one could simply get the cheese only version and be all good? And a tuna sandwich isn't exactly, erm, a home run food in I think anybodys book. I'll have one every now and then at home, but I definitely wouldn't go out of my way to buy one at a restaurant.

I honestly didn't know the ham version existed, so yeah, they probably weren't selling... But tuna!? :what:

And dang, they want $10 for a frenchee meal now? That does seem steep for what it is.

My favorite fast food burger is Bronco's. I would put both Don and Millie's and Runza over Culvers. I actually like Wendy's burgers better than Culvers, although I am not a fan of Culver's burgers. At Culvers I like the melts better than traditional burgers.

I agree with this. Except I’d rank the best fast food burgers in Omaha this way- Don & Millie’s, Broncos, then Runza..

Culver’s has really went down hill IMO over the past 3 or so years…

Runza has a good burger, but one thing that seems to keep happening there is I get my cheeseburger without the cheese being melted on it. The patty should always be hot enough to melt the cheese (or they're using some weird cheese). I find myself taking the patty and cheese off the bun and tossing it in the microwave for 20 seconds or so to get melted cheese. I don't know why, but I find unmelted cheese on fast food burgers to be a little gross.

Don & Millie's is also good, but as I've previously mentioned in this thread they tend to over-season the patties. I'm a guy that loves salt, so if I think the patty is too salty then it's probably very salty.

Bronco's is great for that sort of tiny fast food burger (like a standard McDonald's burger). Great flavor, great bun, and I can't explain why but Bronco's uses the best tasting onions.

Five Guys is good, but will cost you an arm and a leg. I used to really like the whole flame-broiled thing at Burger King, but BK has been a string of disappointments over the last 10 years. I just avoid it now. I haven't tried the new Burger Detour. I also can't remember the last time I had a burger from the King's Classic side of Amigo's.

I know not everyone is on the Culver's wagon. I also agree that they have slipped some exp with the fries.

They have two burgers that are my go to and I feel they have not changed much over time. It is as much about what is in them as it is about the actual burger patty, which is not bad.

My two choices are the Wisconson Swiss Melt as a double

https://www.culvers.com/menu-and-nutrit ... swiss-melt

And the Culvers Delux. This is topped much like I top a burger made at home.

I have to say, I do like a Culver's deluxe. I just don't eat Culver's very often. I think what I like about it is the red onion, it's far superior to the white onion on a burger, imo.

This has also happened to me when I order a cheeseburger at Runza. It’s why among my 3 favorite fast food burgers, I rank them 3rd. It doesn't happen every time, but it happens enough that it’s noticeable…

100% agreed! They have no business getting rid of them - EVER!

For that matter, I actually miss their "original" Arby's Sauce. It's probably been at least 20 years now, but I preferred it (at least at the time). If I remember correctly, it was a bit more bar-b-q tasting.

Lastly, I wish they'd bring back the Arby-Q sandwich.

Dammit Arby's, get your |expletive| together. 🤣

I always forget about the Arby-Q. It was one of my favorite sandwiches as a kid.

As for the tater cakes... For me at least, this isn't a hype item. It's just a hashbrown. Sure, pretty tasty, but I'm not running to Arby's any time soon because of it. More for you guys! I always preferred their curly fries given the choice.

Overall, it's been quite some time since I've had Arby's, I can't remember it. The last item from there I was big on was their Italian sub.

The curly fries are good when they’re fresh, but they often taste like they’ve been sitting around a long time. The potato cakes taste fresh all the time, if not a bit greasy sometimes.

I don't like their Curly fries. Will go with the Crinkle fries every time on the rare occasion I go there. Typically I like Curly fries, but with theirs, between the seasoning and my perception that they are a lot oilier than others, I do a pass.

They do have to be cooked right. I actually have a bag of them frozen, bought from Walmart, and I personally must have them crisp. If they're at all floppy, I'm no fan. But I love the seasoning on them.

Arby’s Potato Cakes were an original iconic offering.. Passing them off as simply “Hash Browns” is not really accurate as to what they are..at all. Hopefully the powers to be keep them on their menu “temporarily Permanently”, LOL..

And I really enjoyed the Arby-Q as well..I don’t understand why that sandwich just disappeared years ago. It was always a change of pace sandwich I’d order fairly frequently when I went to Arby’s…

I respect your love for the potato cakes. But to me, with no bias, shredded potato, oil, and salt = hashbrown. Probably an oversimplification on my part. Though I was never really partial to any particular shredded potato offering, I'd say I preferred McDonald's hashbrown over the potato cake. I guess the thickness of the potato cake held too much of the oil for me and didn't get crisp enough. Don't get me wrong, I liked em, I just don't really see it as something that I have to go out and get.

As a side note, I think it could be interesting if they came out with a seasoned version. Season the potato cake with the curly fry seasoning?

Thanks. A lot of folks, and understandably so, have the same opinion as you. I respect that as well. For me, it’s frustrating when a place (for whatever the reason) pulls an original menu item..

I think we need to get in touch with Arby's R&D. Adding the curly fry seasoning to the potato cake would be such a simple hack, and would make it a unique enough item to go out and get. I would actually leave my house right now if they had that offering.

Just bring the damn things back permanently and add the Arby-Q while you’re at it! 🤣

Regardless, I better get there soon so I can have them while they’re available.

I went to Arby’s today for the first time in six months. They had potato cakes, hooray! What they didn’t have was roast beef, as they were out of it at 5 p.m. This means you can’t order about half the menu.

Edit: And now according to Omaha Scanner, the Arby’s on 72nd and Ames has a structure fire.

Ah Arby’s, it’s always something!

I had the birthday combo. Beef & cheddar, potato cakes & a shake. $11 for something that a few years ago was less than half that. Anyway, the potato cakes were as I remember & the jamoca shake was good.

I'm sure it's changed over time, but I can remember the Arby's in Bellevue running out of roast beef back in the late 90s/early 00s and it's basically a career-ender for the general manager if word gets back to corporate. There's one thing you don't run out of at Arby's and that's roast beef. (Imagine Chick-fil-A running out of chicken.) Now, with restaurants always struggling to retain staff they're probably a lot more forgiving.

I remember going to Burger King on 13th Street towards the intestate one time, probably 10 years ago, and they had a sign up saying they were out of buns, so they could not serve Hamburgers. So the way my mind works I ordered a cheeseburger.... The person taking the order "got it" and laughed and said something to the effect you are not wrong

What menu item do you miss most that hasn't been on a fast food menu in 10+ years? What old school discontinued menu item haunts your dreams?

I'm going to say Taco Bell's Wild Menu (and corresponding Wild Sauce) from the 1990s.

Also, the Pepperoni Pizza Submarino at Fazoli's. I'm not sure if it's been gone 10 years, but it was a tasty sorta French Bread Pizza.

The comments on that were funny.

Heard there were two ladies fighting over potato cakes at and Arby's over in eastern Iowa... LOL

Is the WILD menu at Taco Bell really that long ago. WOW

Also remember the Pep Submarino at Fazoli's with fondness. They have removed other decent items too.

That was just the ground taco meat and shredded cheese on a hamburger bun, right? More like a Tex-Mex "Sloppy Joe." :) It was before my time, but I used to work at TB in the early 1990s and heard mention of it. Was it also called the Bellburger?
