I saw a more in depth story covering this topic online the other day, focusing on Minneapolis. Good to see that many malls are re-imaging to meet changing societal desires.

I saw this video as well, I was going to post it; but you beat me to it!

It makes sense since the creator is from Madison Wisconsin and both cities tend to be nearby in stats due to the similarities in the cities!
Home sweet, home...Omaha!

Peyton Manning Throws a Football Off Skyscraper

From Peyton's Places Season 1 Episode 2: Peyton meets Cris Carter in midtown Manhattan to recreate a famous PR stunt the New York Football Giants pulled off in the 1920s -- by throwing a football off a skyscraper.

Ha. I saw 11 minutes and thought to myself, "No way am I going to stick through this for 11 minutes." However, once it started, I couldn't stop watching all the way to the exclamation point with the closing credits. Obviously, I am easily impressed.

Once Manning started to call “Omaha”, I started to think that a message was here…

Peyton Manning Pitches an ‘Omaha’ Pavilion in EPCOT

https://wdwnt.com/2024/09/peyton-mannin ... -bob-iger/
In the video, Peyton and Eli Manning put together and star in ManningCast: The Musical, inspired by their “Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli” TV show. Their journey starts with Peyton calling [Disney CEO Bob] Iger, looking for a theater. Iger answers the phone and immediately says they won’t be building an Omaha section in EPCOT, a reference to Peyton’s famous catchphrase he would say before a play on the field.

Interesting info..Which also speaks to what I’ve suspected, Omaha is experiencing more robust population growth this decade..It’s noticeable even within the past 5 years..

Thanks for sharing the story link…

Nice. Just as I suspected.

That said, i am very happy to see Chicagoland doing so well, it is a world class city that is the target of ire by many.

Not quite as good of a video of Omaha, but you can see the pocket park that Brad designed at the 14:30 mark:

Thanks for sharing. Always love these videos. I am not a coffee drinker but still nice to watch. All of these videos all have a theme I love, all the people are blown away by what downtown looks like and what they find in Omaha. Great to see!

Dunno who cares to see this but in the video game American Truck Simulator they came out with the Nebraska expansion in 2024, and just this past week came out with the Iowa expansion, showing new approaches including the Kenefick park sign and downtown with cranes all over the place visible from the game's version of I-29.

Omaha is #7 in year over year percentage change, different than just total volume. That generally went too larger metros, but this is still significant!

Heading it reminded me of when Brock Sampson is said to be from Omaha in the Venture Bros.

MORNING LIFT: A holiday movie based in Omaha, full of local connections showing in theaters nationwide

Looks kinda like a Hallmark movie, but if you watch the trailer it starts out in Heartland Of America Park. Supposed to be lots of Omaha sites in it. They are looking to possibly have an Amazon Prime release once its out of theaters.

Does anyone have more details about the flight, i.e. what kind of plane was used and what stops were made along the way to Eppley?

Here you go:

https://www.flightaware.com/live/flight ... /GCTS/KOMA

It was a Boeing 747-400 cargo jet operated by Kalitta Air. It came direct to Omaha from Tenerife, Spain. From Omaha it went to Atlanta.

EDIT: Revised link to better show info on flight to Omaha

I know Eppley is closer to UNMC, but is anyone else surprised that they didn't use Offutt for this? Much more used to handling planes that size, and more secure / out of view for the patient transfers to vehicles...

The plane arrived at 2:30am CDT so I don't know that crowds would've been a huge concern. Eppley doesn't regularly deal with 747s, partially because their use is dwindling, but I do remember that W landed Air Force 1 at Eppley and I believe Trump did back in 2018 as well. The runways can accommodate them, but not the jetways.

Anyone know if the remodeled terminal will be able to handle a 747? For that matter, what's the largest plane Eppley will be able to handle?

No US carrier does regular service with a 747 any longer, so no need to accommodate it. Probably not to an A380 either, but everything else should fit at Eppley gates.

The New York Times had an article on the Quarantine Unit today:

Inside the Hantavirus Isolation Unit Where 15 Americans Wait
Sonia A. Rao / The New York Times wrote:They arrived around 2:30 in the morning on Monday, their government plane stopping on the pavement at the Omaha airport. One by one, they shuffled out, wearing masks and carrying plastic bags holding a small set of their belongings.

They were quickly assessed by a team of doctors, loaded onto shuttle buses — with adequate distance kept between them — and driven to the National Quarantine Unit, the only federal center of its kind in the country.
The National Quarantine Unit, part of the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, was designed to safely isolate and monitor people who have been exposed to infectious diseases. It opened in 2020, when it hosted around a dozen Americans who tested positive or had been exposed to the coronavirus on the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan.

The unit consists of two hallways with 20 single-occupancy rooms, each with a specialized air pressure system designed to prevent contaminated air from flowing out. Every 300-square-foot room has a full bed, exercise equipment, a window, Wi-Fi and video technology. It also has an autoclave, a machine designed to sterilize waste. The unit is staffed by Dr. Wadman and a team of more than 100 doctors and nurses, who slept very little this weekend as they prepared for the passengers’ arrival.
And one of them, at least, is pleased with the accommodations. Angie Vasa, the director of isolation and quarantine for special pathogens at Nebraska Medicine, a health care network that helps operate the units, said that one man who was in quarantine expressed surprise at the quality of his quarters.

“‘I’m so glad that these rooms are so nice,’” she recalled him saying.

Her response: “Welcome to Nebraska.”
