When I was in Phoenix last year, our gate at Sky Harbor Airport was right across from a Fazolis that had recently opened. I found out later they were the first (and maybe only) Fazolis to sell breakfast sandwiches.
That one day event was likely a proof of concept needed to be considered in the proposal for the airport.
Probably doing more Breakfast Runza testing.
The fast food restaurant is bringing a "VERY limited supply" of the highly-anticipated bacon breakfast Runza sandwich to two Omaha locations next week.

Runza said on social media that the sandwich will be available at the 90th and Fort and 168th and Harrison locations.

Southwest is scaling back their operations in ATL. They are dropping OMA-ATL starting April 7th, 2025.

Honestly not a big loss. Delta has so many flights from Omaha to Atlanta daily.

Yep, and that'll give DL carte blanche to crank the fares.

It's a bigger loss than you think from a passenger numbers perspective. Delta dropped their fares with southwest added, that drove more passengers along with the added plane. Now, Delta will slowly increase fares back up. It will drive people not to travel some and it will it also drive some to Kansas City where southwest still will fly to Atlanta for cheaper fares.

Southwest flew this mostly in the late afternoon evening OMA-ATL. This really hurt the route because limited to no connections in ATL. They are experimenting around with a morning flight OMA-ATL instead that just started a month ago, watching, the flight has been mainly full now, better time and connections in ATL. Too bad they didn't fly it in the mornings from the start and I think it would have made this round of cuts.

It's already silly expensive to fly to Atlanta. I've been wanting to go for tourism, but not at $300+

I know how fares work, so I don't need an explanation, but it's just hilarious to me.
Nov 17 - Nov 26 on Delta
OMA - ATL round trip is $379
OMA - DUB round trip is $519 with a layover in Atlanta. Might as well just go to Dublin instead of Atlanta and do one of those Beercations that people have been talking about.

If you think that is silly expensive, just wait til it is only Delta! $379 is very reasonable compared to what I've been paying for flights the last few years.

Yes, it's a loss from a passengers number perspective. I just won't go there.

Support for cladding on the canopy and its pillars is getting put in place along with prep for the glass on the northern sections.

Also, more work (and some new cinder block construction north of the north terminal) getting done. Looks like more pilings and prep around the central plant.

Good stuff Tuna. Thanks for posting the pics.

I just flew out and back from Eppley a week ago. Once this airport “makeover” is completed, it’s going to take OMA to another level IMO.. It’ll always be a Medium Hub airport, but it’s ranking among it’s peers will skyrocket…

Bottom line to all of this is increasing non stop destinations, frequencies, airlines, passenger numbers and of course number of Runzas sold.

Spirit and Jetblue are both in trouble so I wouldn't count on them, Alaska doesn't contribute much and adding back Portland and San Diego are the only real options, Air Canada could add back Toronto but again, wouldn't add much numbers wise. That leaves the legacy carriers. Flights to Mexico and the Caribbean would be nice & a nice flex. Allegiant could add destinations. Southwest needs to settle down but could add some service. Delta, American & United may step up to the plate.
Delta could add Boston, JFK, maybe Austin at some point.
United could add Newark and/or Dulles.

KCI doesn't really have many more destinations than us, and they have more than double the volume of passengers. We're still probably a ways off from any significant expansion of destinations.

I don't think much will change with the new airport, ultimately.

It will be much nicer to fly out of, and it will be a great Welcome sign for the city of Omaha, but a lot of the project seems like it was just our turn for a new airport because Eppley was ancient.

Their direct-flight list is a bit screwy tho. They have flights to Burbank and Long Beach in addition to their LAX flights. There's such minuscule marginal benefit to adding a direct flight to the 2nd and 3rd airport in a market.

Yeah, they should just close those airports, right? /s

Well, no, I don't really want Burbank. I would want new markets not those that overlap almost 100% with existing routes.

If you ARE going to the L.A. area, though, that’s far and away the airport you want to fly into. LAX is awful.

I previously used Bob Hope on WN, and after Googling it looks like it's the same airport. Why'd they change the name?

So you’d know where it is and be more likely to book a flight to it. “Bob Hope” means nothing to people location-wise, but Hollywood and Burbank do

They also have non stops to BWI, IAD, BOS, & EWR. As for miniscule numbers, the more the merrier. DSM had flights to Palm Springs, CA this summer. Huge demand? Probably not. On the other hand, sometimes demand is born with the announcement. In addition, in a market like LA which is a huge land area the 2nd & 3rd airports do have value.

To be fairrrrrr Palm Springs is a good 2 hours from LA with light traffic.

I dunno man, we've flown into LGB the past couple times we've gone to LA and it's a pretty excellent experience. Though fairly inconvenient if you're headed to somewhere around Hollywood, it's such an easy airport to get in and out of, convenient to Disneyland/Orange County and, it has a quintessentially southern California vibe; most of it is outside or open air with recently remodeled facilities, including a 1940s art deco terminal (though it's used for rental car counters).

Agreed on LAX. The last time we flew out of there we were flying United in terminal 7 at the end of the U-shaped drop-off/pick-up drive. There was so much traffic that I decided to test a theory that if we had our rental car bus drop us off at terminal 1, we could walk the entire length of the drive and beat the bus to terminal 7. Not only did we beat our bus, we beat the bus that left the rental car facility before ours did. Though I imagine this will change with the new people mover connection to a consolidated rental car facility and the expanded Metro system.

Tying this all back into Eppley, I do get the desire for more new markets, but I don't think we can underestimate the value of secondary or tertiary airports.

I think once our airport expansion/renovation is complete, it will really bring Omaha to the next level. Seems dumb, but if we have CHI bringing in more events including the NCAA tournament, whatever the new volleyball stuff is and of course all of Rod Yates' amazing developments, we're going to bring a lot of attention to our market.

I really hope Omaha gets direct flights out to somewhere fun like Mexico or Jamaica, something along those lines... I don't see us getting direct flights overseas to places like Europe, Asia, etc...

I’m not sure I follow your logic. I would give just about anything for a flight to John Wayne on Alaska. Orange County is a long drive from LAX (sometimes really long), and where a tremendous amount of business is done. San Diego a close 2nd for me.

You either have to be watching in real-time as it was happening or wait a couple of months for the DOT data to come out. I wasn't watching it in real-time. Milton obviously was in October though, and the middle of Setember isn't going to be a period of high demand from Omaha to the Southeast. I'd expect any cancellations and or impact on Eppley to be fairly minimal.

“Yes, Man” gave us LAX to Lincoln at a time when even OMA didn’t fly to LAX iirc (am I correct in remembering we didn’t get steady west coast service until the mid 2010s, before that the western hub was Denver, SLC, Phoenix, or Vegas depending on the airline?)

Southwest will end up flying around 2 million customers in and out of OMA this year..

Pretty impressive. I’m old enough to remember the days in the early 1990’s when folks were hoping Southwest would add OMA..and remember what a big deal was when they finally did..and FINALLY started flying direct/nonstop, round trip to Love in Dallas..instead of needing to connect in STL first…

Lol...probably would have been easier than setting up the spreadsheet that I did. Three months to go...we'll see how far off I'll be this year. Think I've been about 20k or less off from the actual total the last couple years.
