As a former Pennsylvanian, I can say wholeheartedly...talk about a city reinventing itself! I was there about 3 years ago, and was stunned at the changes made. Gone are the belching steel mills, and the dreary filth. It was like a city reborn. Thanks for the current pics! Love them!
Always a business-oriented city hungry for growth and focused on development with laser intensity, Omaha aimed high, reached for momentum and found critical mass.
How did downtown bounce back after the hurricane flood (yes, from a hurricane) in Sept '04? Apparently well. We were there for the NU-Pitt game and the whole area was under water. If you look at the fourth pic of Heinz Field, the water was touching the bottom of the bridge in the foreground.
Considering the weather circumstances, we were very impressed with Pittsburgh's downtown (although I just about had to kill a little mouthy high school punk showing off for his girlfriend). Loved the incline lifts (or whatever they called them) on the other side of the river.
Thread revival. I am not much of a photo taker, but I did snag one at the top of the Duquesne Incline this weekend. I really liked Pittsburgh. Downtown was dense and lively. What I enjoyed more were the number of very nice well preserved neighborhoods. I was kind of expecting to see some swaths of land that had been demoed similar to some areas of Detroit or STL, but the neighborhoods I was in were really still well built out and full of old building stock. That includes what were clearly more working class areas. The city might be the best dive bar city in the country too. There is still some grit left, but it still feels like a happening city. Pretty cool place.

I have never been to Pittsburgh but always wanted to go. Almost did last year when Creighton played there in the tournament. Glad to hear it has some grit. I always love cities like that more and that’s what I still love about Omaha, it still has some too.
And I would love to go on the incline like you did as well.
I was there once, at least 20 years ago. I loved my visit. Stayed at one of the big downtown convention hotels. We had a day or two to tour around. Hit the incline, and the Warhol museum. Also spent time in a nearby urban neighborhood that definitely had “gritty” written all over it (in a good way). I think we ate at a brew pub there and wandered some shops.
I’ve always liked Pittsburgh’s skyline. Both Pittsburgh and Philadelphia have great skylines, I’ve never been to Pittsburgh but have been to Philly twice but it’s been like 10 years. They’ve added a new tallest since I was there.
