Yeah that will be a big factor. One more is 1890. The new ad has embraced NIL so much more than Trev (as evidenced by the logo on the football field). With the football team generating so much more interest now (prices for tickets on the secondary market have jumped) there just seems to be some serious momentum for athletics down in Lincoln. Taking some weight off the volleyball team which is more popular than ever.

A new take on Opening Night:

The tipoff of the 2024-25 season moves to the streets, as Opening Night presented by SCHEELS will take place on Friday, Oct. 4.

This interactive, fan-friendly event will take place on Canopy Street between R and Q Streets, as the street next to the Railyard near Pinnacle Bank Arena will be closed for the event. The event starts at 7 p.m. includes both the Husker men’s and women’s programs and is free to the public.

Opening Night will feature introductions of both Husker teams, remarks from Head Coaches Fred Hoiberg and Amy Williams and selected players, contests with players and fans and much more. In case of inclement weather, the event will be cancelled.

“Opening Night is an event our players look forward to because it’s a chance to show their personality and have some fun with our fans,” Hoiberg said. “Moving it to the Railyard should create a fun environment and allow for more fan interaction with both our basketball programs and kick off what should be a fun Homecoming weekend on campus.”

“We are so excited for the upcoming season, and we can’t wait to see all the Husker fans in the Haymarket," Williams said. "It should be a great atmosphere as part of the University’s Homecoming weekend and a fun event for everyone.”

Both Husker teams come off NCAA Tournament appearances in 2023-24 and have many of their key returnees back this season.

The Husker men return seven letterwinners, including three starters, from a team that went 23-11 and reached the NCAA Tournament for Big Ten Coach of the Year Fred Hoiberg. NU is led by the senior duo of Brice Williams (13.4 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 2.5 apg) and Juwan Gary (11.6 ppg, 6.1 rpg) while adding the services of seven Division I transfers to the lineup.

The Husker women are coming off a 23-12 season which included a second-round appearance in the NCAA Tournament for Coach Amy Williams. The Husker women are led by All-Big Ten center Alexis Markowski (15.7 ppg, 10.5 rpg) and reigning Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Year Natalie Potts (10.2 ppg, 5.5rpg) The Huskers also welcome a strong class of newcomers led by two-time Nebraska High School Player-of-the-Year Britt Prince.

Single game tickets on sale:

Lincoln – Husker fans can now purchase individual game tickets for the 2024-25 Nebraska men’s basketball season beginning Tuesday morning.

The Nebraska Athletic Ticket Office announced that 300 Level Tickets for all 17 matchups are now on sale. The Big Ten Conference games are priced at $17 apiece (including fees), while the non-conference games, including the exhibition game with Grand Valley State, are priced at $12 per game (including fees).

Tickets can be purchased by visiting Huskers.com/Tickets or calling the Nebraska Athletic Ticket Office at 800-8-BIG-RED during business hours (9 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Friday).

The home schedule includes 10 Big Ten Conference matchups, including games against defending Big Ten Tournament champion Illinois, postseason qualifiers Iowa, Minnesota and Ohio State. Indiana (17), UCLA (22) and Rutgers (25) were all in the AP Preseason Top 25 released Monday, while Illinois, Ohio State, Michigan and Maryland received votes in the preseason AP poll.

In addition to single-game tickets, a pair of other options are currently available for the 2024-25 season. Season tickets start at $153 for all 17 contests, while the Starting 5 Mini Plan is on sale for $50. The Starting 5 Plan allows fans to pick any two conference games and three of the non-conference games.

As a reminder, all basketball tickets for the 2024-25 season are mobile tickets.

Fans will have their first chance to see the 2024-25 Huskers in action on Sunday, Oct. 27, when they host Grand Valley State. Tipoff for the game is set for 1 p.m.

Lincoln - The Nebraska men’s basketball team used a 30-6 run over a 10-minute span, as the Huskers cruised to a 73-53 win over Grand Valley State at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Nebraska broke open a 28-all deadlock late in the first half by scoring seven of the last nine points of the half before clamping down on the defensive end. The Huskers forced Grand Valley State into missing 14 of its first 15 shots from the floor in the first nine minutes of the half as Nebraska built a 58-34 lead after a Gavin Griffiths’ 3-pointer.

Griffiths led Nebraska with 14 points, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, while Brice Williams added 13 markers, as Nebraska shot 50 percent from the field and turned 19 GVSU turnovers into 21 points. Griffiths had 11 of his 14 points in the spurt to help break the game open.

Nebraska, which never trailed, had 13 steals, including three from Rollie Worster and two apiece from Juwan Gary and Berke Büyüktuncel, who led Nebraska with 12 rebounds in 19 minutes of work.

Nebraska got off to a great start and closed the half on 7-2 run over the final two minutes of the half to take a 35-30 lead into the locker room. NU shot 50 percent from the floor and turned eight Grand Valley State turnovers into 13 first-half points.

The Huskers got off to a quick start, jumping out to an 11-3 lead, as Juwan Gary had five points and a pair of assists in the spurt to force an early timeout. Grand Valley State battled back and pulled even at 28 after a Shamus Thompson free throw with 2:05 left in the half.

Griffiths then broke the deadlock with a 3-pointer before two free throws from William Dunn made it a one-point game. NU then got baskets from Ahron Ulis and Williams to close the half with a five-point lead. Nebraska opened the second half with a 9-2 run as Williams’ 3-pointer and two baskets from Worster gave NU a 12-point lead and the Huskers cruised from there.

Mason Docks led Grand Valley State with seven points, as Grand Valley State shot 28 percent, including 17 percent in the final 20 minutes.

1st game is in the books. A not so impressive win, 87-67:

Lincoln - Brice Williams scored a game-high 27 points, while Connor Essegian had seven of his 13 points off the bench in a decisive second-half run, as Nebraska defeated the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley, 87-67 on Monday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Williams carried the Huskers (1-0) with 19 first-half points, and Nebraska eventually built a 15-point second half lead before UTRGV came back. The Vaqueros fought back and got to within 69-65 on K.T. Raimey’s basket with 5:52 left before Essegian took over.

The 6-foot-4 guard started a 12-0 Husker spurt with seven unanswered points, as he hit a 3-pointer and then connected on two free throws on the next possession to push the lead to nine with 4:13 left. Essegian then capped a personal 7-0 spurt with a driving layup to extend the lead to double figures with 3:52 left. NU, which got six straight stops, eventually extended the margin to 81-65 after a Juwan Gary basket with 2:40 left.

The Big Red had four players in double-digits, as Rollie Worster had 18 points, nine rebounds and four steals while Andrew Morgan added 10 markers.

Nebraska held the Vaqueros to 38% shooting and forced 20 turnovers which led to 26 Husker points.

Williams got the Huskers going early, scoring the first eight points of the night in the 2:51 span and NU lead 14-6 before UTRGV came back. The Vaqueros, who hit eight 3-pointers in the first half used a 10-4 spurt to take a 22-21 lead on a Howie Fleming Jr. free throw with 8:01 left in the half.

The teams would trade the lead back and forth, and Nebraska trailed 29-28 before the Huskers took control. NU ran off ran off six straight points to take a 34-29 lead on a Gavin Griffiths basket with 3:45 left in the half. UTRGV pulled within 34-32, but Williams scored Nebraska’s final eight points of the half, as the Huskers took a 42-36 lead into the break.

NU opened the second half with a 15-8 spurt to stretch the lead to 15, at 59-44 after Worster's jumper with 14:35 remaining before UTRGV mounted a comeback.

Raimey led UTRGV (0-1) with 14 points.

Another unimpressive win for the Big Red:

Juwan Gary had 11 points, nine rebounds and a career-high five steals, as Nebraska improved to 2-0 with a 63-58 win over Bethune-Cookman Saturday night.

Gary keyed a Nebraska (2-0) effort that saw the Huskers hold Bethune-Cookman to 35.5 percent shooting and forced 22 Wildcat turnovers, as the Huskers won their 14th straight at home dating back to last season.

Nebraska, which shot 34.5 percent, built a 16-point second-half lead, but Bethune-Cookman (0-2) continued to battle, and the Huskers finally subdued the Wildcats by going 6-of-6 from the line in the last minute.

Leading 29-24 at the break, Brice Williams had six of his 10 points in the first 1:42 of the half, as the senior hit consecutive 3-pointers to give NU a 35-26 advantage. A couple minutes later, NU used a 9-0 spurt to build its largest lead of the game at 46-30 with 13:55 left.

Bethune-Cookman chipped away, using an 8-0 run to cut the deficit in half at 46-38 before Connor Essegian’s layup ended the Wildcat run. Nebraska led 51-41 after Braxton Meah’s 3-point play with 8:20 left in regulation, but could not extend it further, allowing the visitors to hang around.

Leading 57-50 with 1:47 left, the visitors kept battling and got to within three twice in the last minute, the final time at 61-58 after a Gianni Hunt basket with 18 seconds left, but Brice Williams was fouled and hit both free throws to make it a five-point game, as NU held on.

In the first half, Nebraska used a strong defensive effort to overcome a poor shooting, as the Huskers took a 29-24 lead into the locker room. Nebraska held Bethune-Cookman to 35.7 percent shooting and forced 15 turnovers in the first half to overcome 26 percent shooting from the field.

Nebraska trailed 12-6 after a David Onanina basket at the 14:18 mark, but the Huskers responded with a 11-2 run to take a 17-14 lead after a pair of free throws from Berke Büyüktuncel, who finished with six points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocks.

The Huskers never trailed again the rest of the half, but Bethune-Cookman stayed in the game by hitting four 3-pointers, the last made it 27-24 with 35 seconds left in the half. Ahron Ulis sent the hosts to the locker room with a five-point lead, as he had a driving layup with just over two seconds left to give NU a 29-24 cushion.

Quentin Ryhmes officially signs:

Nebraska men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg announced Wednesday that Quentin Rhymes has signed a financial aid agreement and will join the Husker basketball program for the 2025-26 season.

Rhymes, a 6-foot-7, 195-pound wing from Las Vegas, Nev., plays for national power Hillcrest (Ariz.) Prep and Coach Marcus Gantt. The Bruins’ postgrad team is unbeaten so far in 2024-25, and Rhymes had 20 points along with eight rebounds, six assists and four steals in a game last week.

A four-star prospect by 247Sports, Rhymes was rated No. 136 nationally by On3, which ranked him as a three-star prospect. Both publications had him among the top 15 prospects in the state of Arizona for the class of 2025.

“Quentin is a skilled guard who fits well in our system,” Hoiberg said. “He is a good shooter with length and athleticism on the wing and can play through contact. He also handled the ball with the Las Vegas Knicks AAU program and showed good court vision and a high basketball IQ. He reminds me of Brice Williams, as Quentin has a similar skillset and is someone who can develop in our system.”

Rymes played for Coach Lamar Bigby with the Las Vegas Knicks on the PRO16/NXT League circuit, averaging 17.5 points, six rebounds and five assists per game, highlighted by a 40-point effort.

He played his first three seasons of high school at Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas before spending his senior year at Bella Vista (Ariz.) College Prep.

Rhymes, who played in the 2023 Pangos All-American Camp, selected Nebraska over New Mexico, Boise State, UNLV, and UC Santa Barbara. The son of Wayne and Maria Rhymes, the elder Rhymes played college basketball at Portland State and Colorado-Colorado Springs before playing professionally overseas.

Against probably the worst opponent of the season, Nebraska rolls:

Juwan Gary scored a season-high 19 points and dished out a career-high five assists, as Nebraska topped FDU, 86-60, Wednesday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Gary led three Huskers in double figures with his 19-point night to pace three in double figures, it was NU’s depth that shined in the win. NU got 29 points from its bench, including eight apiece from Gavin Griffiths and Ahron Ulis, as NU’s bench enjoyed a 29-5 advantage in the win.

Berke Büyüktuncel joined Gary in double figures with 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Brice Williams had 10 points, including five straight in a 13-2 Husker run after FDU pulled to within 11 points with just over 11 minutes.

Nebraska was opportunistic, turning 17 Knight turnovers into 28 points as NU held FDU to 60 points, nearly 25 points below its season average.

Terrence Brown led the Knights (1-3) with a game-high 23 points.

The Huskers took control over the final 12 minutes of the half, turning a one-point lead into a 45-25 lead at the break. Nebraska, which struggled from the floor early, got going as Gary’s jumper ignited a 10-0 run that pushed the lead to 21-10 after a basket from Ulis.

FDU stayed within striking distance and was within 32-21 after Dylan Jones’ jumper with 5:26 left in the half, before a basket from Rollie Worster and a 3-pointer from Connor Essegian stretched the lead to 37-21. From there, it was the Husker bench that provided a spark, as Sam Hoiberg and Cale Jacobsen – seeing his first action of the year – helped hold FDU to one field goal over the final five minutes of the half as Nebraska closed the half on an 8-2 spurt to take a 45-25 lead into the break.

The Knights opened the second half with a 6-0 run to get within 14 in the first 1:25 of the half. FDU kept chipping away behind Brown, who had 19 second half points, and got to within 58-49 after Ahmed Barba -Bay banked in a 3-pointer with 11:02 left.

Williams took over from there, accounting for seven straight Husker points over the next 65 seconds to give the hosts some breathing room. The senior had a 3-point play off the inbounds after the media time out and converted a pair of free throws on the next possession before ending the run with a steal and finding Griffiths for a layup that gave NU a 16-point cushion. That was part of a 13-2 run that stretched the lead back to 20 points with 5:26 left and put the game out of reach.

The Huskers hit the road for the first time this season, as they travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., for a matchup against Saint Mary’s on Sunday. Tipoff is set for Noon (central) and a handful of tickets are available by visiting Ticketmaster.com

Huskers fall to St Mary's in Sioux Falls:

Despite a game-high 28 points from Brice Williams, Nebraska suffered its first loss of the season, falling 77-74 to Saint Mary’s in front of a sellout crowd of 3,241 at the Sanford Pentagon Sunday afternoon.

Williams, whose 28 points was his highest total in his Nebraska career, hit 8-of-12 shots from the field and was a perfect 11-of-11 from the foul line, as Nebraska overcame a 14-point first-half deficit and had a chance to send the game in overtime.

Nebraska had rallied back from a 10-point deficit in the final 4:12 behind Williams, who had six points in a 11-2 spurt to pull within 75-74 with 6.6 seconds left.

The Gaels got the ball to Mikey Lewis, who was fouled with 5.4 seconds left. Lewis, a freshman, capped a 23-point afternoon by sinking both free throws to give SMC a three-point lead. On NU’s possession, the Huskers got the ball to Williams, but his closely guarded 3-pointer was off the mark, allowing the Geals to escape with the win.

Lewis led Saint Mary’s (4-0) with 23 points, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range, while Paulis Murauskas added 16 points for the winners. The Gaels went 11-of-23 from 3-point range and turned 15 Nebraska turnovers into 21 points.

Williams led four Huskers in double figures, as Berke Büyüktuncel finished with a career-high 15 points while Rollie Worster and Andrew Morgan added 10 apiece.

Trailing 46-43 at the break, the Huskers scored the first five points of the half, taking their first lead of the game on a Williams’ 3-pointer with 19:16 remaining. Büyüktuncel, who had 13 of his 15 points after halftime, had two straight putbacks to extend the lead to 52-48 before hitting two free throws at the 15:05 mark to give NU its largest leads of the day at 54-49.

The Gaels, who won the West Coast Conference title last year, rallied as 3-pointers from Lewis and Augustas Marciulionis sparked a 9-0 run that gave Saint Mary’s a 58-54 lead. Nebraska fought back and tied it at 60 apiece on an Andew Morgan 3-pointer with just under 10 minutes remaining.

That would be as close as Nebraska got down the stretch, as Saint Mary’s used a 13-3 spurt to push the lead back to 10 following Lewis’ 3-pointer with 4:13 left.

In the first half, the Huskers overcame a slow start to pull within 46-43 at the break, as Williams had 17 of his 28 points in the opening 20 minutes.

Saint Mary’s opened the contest with an 8-0 spurt, including a pair of 3-pointers from Luke Barrett and hit eight of their first 12 shots from the floor to build a 23-9 advantage after a 3-point play from Paulius Marauskas with 13:28 left in the half before mounting a comeback.

The Huskers ran off seven straight points, capped by a Connor Essegian 3-pointer to cut the deficit to seven.

Barrett had 13 of his 15 points, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, in the opening half, as the Gaels went 7-of-13 from behind the arc in the opening 20 minutes.

The Huskers continued to chip away, getting within 32-26 after a Brice Williams basket before Mikey Lweis hit consecutive 3-pointers to help push the lead back to double digits. Saint Mary’s stretched the lead to 45-33 before the Huskers roared back and closed the half on a 10-1 run over the final 2:32 including 3-pointers from Rollie Worster and Essegian to pull NU within three at the break.

The Huskers return to action on Friday, Nov. 22, as the NU travels to No. 14 Creighton. Tipoff from the CHI Health Center is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be carried on the Huskers Radio Network and televised on FS1.

On the St Mary's game. I actually feel better about the team than after any of the wins. Dug themselves a whole but battled back against a much better team than they had previously faced.

Huskers with the surprising win over CU in Omaha Friday night, with Creighton never having led:

Juwan Gary and Brice Williams had 16 points apiece, as Nebraska shut down No. 14 Creighton, 74-63, Friday night.

Nebraska (4-1) put five in double figures and held Creighton to a season-low 63 points, 25 points below its average entering Friday’s contest, as the Bluejays were held to 32.7 percent shooting.

Gary, who was a starter on the 2022 team that won in Omaha over No. 7 Creighton, shared team-high honors with 16 points with Brice Williams.

Connor Essegian came off the bench for 15 points while Berke Büyüktuncel (12) and Rollie Worster (11) finished in double figures for Nebraska, which won back-to-back games at Creighton for the first time since the early 1990s.

Nebraska shot 41 percent and went 22-of-30 from the line against a Creighton team that entered the game leading the nation in fewest fouls committed.

Nebraska’s defense blanked Big East preseason Player-of-the-Year Ryan Kalkbrenner to four points on 0-of-1 shooting in 38 minutes. Kalkbrenner entered Friday’s game with 25.8 points per game on 89 percent shooting. Nebraska forced Creighton (4-1) into a school-record 42 3-point attempts, going 12-of-42 from 3-point range.

Nebraska, which never trailed, controlled the pace, committing a season-low seven turnovers, while forcing Creighton into 17 turnovers which led to 22 Husker points.

The Huskers put together their best defensive half of the season to take a 35-24 lead into the locker room. NU held Creighton to 28 percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes and converted eight Bluejay turnovers into 12 points.

Nebraska got the quick start it needed as Gary scored five early points as the Huskers got off to an 8-3 lead and led 12-8 at the media timeout. Essegian then came with six key points in an 8-3 run, taking a 20-11 lead on a basket from Büyüktuncel with 9:26 left in the half.
Leading 20-13, Gary keyed an 11-0 Husker run over the next five-plus minutes with six points, as his two free throws gave the Huskers a 31-13 lead with 2:53 left in the half.

Creighton got to within 33-24 after Pop Isaac’s 3-pointer with 36 seconds left, but the Huskers would answer back as Williams hit a jumper in the final seconds of the half to give NU an 11-point lead heading into the locker room.
Isaacs led Creighton with 25 points while Steven Ashworth added 16 markers.

Crieghton closed to within 35-26 after a Jamiya Neal dunk, but a basket from Büyüktuncel and a 3-point from Gary stretched the lead back to 14. The Bluejays cut the deficit to 42-35 after a Neal basket, but Nebraska had an answer with six straight points to push the lead to 48-35 after a Essegian basket.

Nebraska eventually built the lead to 16 with 7:45 left before Creighton made one last run, getting to within 61-53 with 5:47 but could get no closer, as a Büyüktuncel layup started a 9-1 run that put the game out of reach.

*-Tonight marks the third time NU has beaten a ranked Creighton team, as the Bluejays were ranked 14th in the AP poll entering today. The others were in 2006 (No. 20) and 2022 (No. 7)

Yeah that was a rough look for Creighton. Nick Bahe and Kevin Kugler were very complimentary of the defense that Nebraska put together for Creighton and speculated that it might be a blueprint for others. Will be interesting to see what Kansas does.

I also saw on Twitter some slow-mo shots of Ashworth's injury. One person showed that came from him seemingly kicking out his leg to draw contact/foul, and because his leg was so extended his foot came down on top of the defender's foot. Glad to hear it wasn't a season ender for him.
