Oh score! I had no idea this was in the works. I must check it out this weekend! It would have to be much like Hummel with the terrain. Nice to see it's done by the city too, so it should be nicely equipped. Far as I can tell none of the ones in Omaha are funded and maintained by anybody but the people who play.
And a full course is 18, yes. But some are 9, others just go with whatever number there's room for.
I made it out there last Friday. It's fun, pretty technical. The main thing I got from it is, this is a brand new course, and it already has as good or better amenities than any given course in Omaha. There's signage at every tee pad, all the pads are artificial turf, all pins are new, theres structure such as retaining walls and steps.
How great Omaha's courses could be if they had even the littlest bit of funding. As I said earlier, all the courses in Omaha seem to be funded and maintained by players. Perfect examples are I, myself incognito built and installed the bench at the top of the giant hill at hole 10 at Hummel, as well as the steps at the bottom of the hill leading up to that. Somebody built the bridge leading up to that. I remember when I had dreams of having pristine disc golf courses here, so I tried to call and connect with any city parks department and basically just got "Wuts a disk golf :p" Disc golf is pretty popular, I wish we could get something to help make our courses better.
The new disk course at prairie queen was pretty nice and had 18 holes, I haven't been to the one at Fairmount park so I can't compare but obviously I assume it's a bit more scenic.
I never knew about Prairie Queen. It looks like it's pretty nice and seems to be sponsored by Dynamic Discs, so that would be an outlier. I wonder who got that done. But still, speaking of the courses within Omaha, it seems it's been a struggle to get and keep them up to and in good shape.
Recently played PQ this past weekend. I thought before that the wind might be an issue and holy wow was I right. Not sure I'll be playing there again until leaves come back.
Fairmont was really cute to play, didn't even know that part of Council Bluffs until visiting, fun drives to get up there. My only real complaint was the amount of trash that was around the place. Will bring a trash bag next time. It seemed like one of those places where cars go up, linger and litter. That being said, I really liked the course itself and the fact no one else was there!
I agree with Bus, if Omaha parks had more initiative, there's a lot of great spaces to build disc golf. Fontenelle Blvd being a prime spot. It's only gaining in popularity, the cost of entry is low and it's a great way to just get outside with a purpose.
Lincoln has a lot of cooperation with the city, is that a model to follow? Beale Slough is king and no one even comes close. Lost and found boxes. Driving range. Nets for practicing drives. Designated warmup and practice area. Relationship with local shops. I lost a key fob there, posted on FB and within a week someone found it, returned it to the shop. We have that good community here in Omaha, just none of it seems all that connected. Just my two cents!
