I'm more apt to say Clemson winning is why Alabama lost its spot. If SMU won, maybe the would have been room. But as was stated above, losing to Vanderbilt and Oklahoma were pretty much deal breakers.

This season didn’t feel that much better than 2023. Except they got one more win to go to a bowl game. Nebraska really needs to win this bowl game to carry some positive momentum into next season. If they lose , they will have lost 6 of their last 7 games after a 5-1 start. Rhule would then probably be moved to the hot seat category.

I'd say Boston College is a fair match up. So does ESPN. They have them at almost a dead even 50/50. I'm not real confident they'll win, just it's winnable. I think they might actually come out and try to win this, as you said, it's pretty important to Rhule's job security. I also won't be surprised if tbey come out and just |expletive| the bed. Only thing I really don't like about it is the location. For them it's gonna be a bus ride, for the good guys, a flight. That's really the advantage I see that could make things turn south for the Skers.

The outcome will depend heavily on whether we can find some coaches and players willing to show up to the game! :D

Good news: Emmett Johnson changed his mind and decided not to transfer. He'll stay at Nebraska.

Oh, and here's something ironic: Scott Frost is returning to UCF.

Glad to hear about the RB Johnson changing his mind, this portal stuff is ruining college football in my opinion. The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence. Chubba Purdy's like at his 4th school now.

Emmett Johnson sounds like the name of an NFL player. Maybe he'll actually become one when he's finished at Nebraska?

Honestly for me, bowl wins and loss carry zero weight on how I view a season. With players opting out to get ready for the draft and others doing the same because of the portal, it's really hard to get a read on a win or a loss in a bowl game.

The value is the extra practices allotted to prepare for it. Nebraska has had dozens of less practices over the years since we went to a bowl game compared to our local conference foes like Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa.

I don’t know about you but despite the hassles of flying I would prefer a 2 hour plane ride to a 4 or 5 hour bus ride.

Well, with almost all the first round games over, and Ohio state leading 21-0 in the first, I'd have to say these first round games haven't made a good case for the 12 team playoff. Unless something drastically changes during this ongoing game, all the higher seeded home teams have won, and they weren't even close or remotely entertaining.

One glaring thing I'd change immediately after this year is to disregard conference championship auto bids. Just have the "12 best teams" and seed them according to ranking.

I'd also wager that a 9-12 seed will never win a national championship. Might be a couple 5-8 seeds sprinkled in there over time, but for the most part, I think the powers that be generally have a good guage on which teams are the best.

Well now Ohio State just beat Tennessee 42-17. So now they’ll face Oregon in the Rose Bowl.

Completely agree. Twelve teams is way too many. Of course, all the chatter from the broadcasters is that we should expand to 16 teams… :x

My strong preference: a zero team playoff; writers and coaches vote for the national champion; healthy and entertaining debate ensues.

I'm of the belief that if there's any subjectivity involved, then no playoff. I think it would be fine to go back to 1 vs 2 only, just to avoid the split championship. But still if there's going to be any polls at all, there shouldn't be a playoff.

The only way to have a true objective champion is to go full fledged playoff format. Say there's 72 teams competing, divide them into six conferences for 12 teams each. Every team plays every team in the conference for 11 games total. Every conference champion is determined in season through head to head and tie breakers. Six team playoff, top two seeds get the byes. Much like the NFL.

I just hate the subjectivity of the seeding mixing with what is the objectivity of the playoff. I'd be fine goingbback to polls too. Pick one.

I think there should be a disqualifier such as three losses and you're automatically out. There clearly didn't need to be 12 teams in it this year. And Alabama once again had no reason to be in the conversation. It's unfortunate that bowl games are now meaningless.

2 of the 4 teams that got walloped had less than 3 losses.

3 of 4? I think Clemson was the only 3 loss team.

Bottom line, the first round was utterly pointless. Aside from the schools and TV making money off it, I think there's going to be a lot of face saving going on from here. They'll try real hard to make it look like a good idea and a success. I'm not buying it.

I seldom watch these games, most of the football I watch is just the NFL. I’ll try and catch the Nebraska bowl game. Not a big fan of College football anymore with the current Playoffs and portal transfer merry go round . I wonder if ratings are down I would think so.

That is a great point about the bad mix of subjectivity and objectivity. I had sensed this as a problem, but hadn't quite formulated it in such clear terms.

For me, the playoffs clearly detract from: the regular season; the conference championship games; the bowl games. They are a poorly formulated cash grab by the television networks and schools.

I'm mostly tuned out at this point, too. Of course, for better or worse, I can't stop following Dear Old Nebraska U. Must be genetics or something…

Well sure hindsight is 20-20. Isn't the point of the playoffs to leave no doubt? That the teams that got walloped at least earned the right to get walloped? I'm just saying yeah 3 of the teams with 2 losses got beat handily ok, well that shouldn't mean a 3 loss team should've been there instead.

I was not suggesting that if you have only two losses you should get in regardless. Yes, Clemson could have been left out along with another two loss team such as with Miami. Now who is where the committee comes in I suppose. I'm sure the system will continue to evolve over the next few years(for better hopefully or possibly worse).

The real benefit of Nebraska playing in the “Frozen Tundra” Bowl, is the extra several weeks of practice the team was able to take advantage of to build for next season..

Other than that, this Bowl game is pretty much a yawn fest…

That would be Lambeau Field no? It's only supposed to be in the mid-upper 40s, although also a bit rainy. Frankly as a fan, I'd much rather go to NYC than any of the traditional bowl sites. I actually went to the Gator Bowl in '09 and it was colder than in Chicago(where I lived at the time).

I also don't miss the days of playing a "bowl game" against Miami at their home field.

Nebraska controlling the first half of this game. But 2 turnovers and a blocked extra point is letting BC hang around. Mistakes and sloppy play still a problem for Nebraska. Bet BC coaches watched and studied the Neb/Iowa game.
