Remember When There Were Only A Few Bowl Games?

Post by mrsticka »

There was the Rose Bowl, the Orange Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl, the Cotton Bowl and the Sugar Bowl? And usually only the best teams made it to them? Now there’s so many bowl games I can’t even count them.

Anybody else?

Like this disgusting Mayo Bowl??? Barf!!!! They were making the announcers eat garbage with Mayo on it! So gross! One of the announcers was barfing in a trash can on live TV. At least they could use a good condiment like Mustard.

common, you guys need to get some fire in your |expletive|! Should be the Tabasco Bowl!

Also, P. J. Fleck should have mayo in his face 365 days a year.

I listed 5 bowl games, not 4.

In 1968-1969, the year the Peach Bowl started, there were 10 bowl games.

Correct. You asked if we remembered when there were only the 5 games. I gave an example when an additional one came into play and I am not even old enough to remember that era (and many followed in the years that followed).

I am 57 and am too young to remember the era when there were only 5. You must be quite a bit older than me. When I was a kid, there were quite a few more bowls than 4. When I was young and first started watching there were way more than 3. I just looked up some more, outside of the bowls that are now included in the playoffs the Sun Bowl started in 1934, Gator Bowl in 1945, Citrus in 1946, Liberty 1949, and more that followed. And as Brad pointed out, there were already 10 by 1969. And more followed in the 70's.

I guess I’m just remembering wrong. As far as I was concerned, the really big bowl games were the Rose, Orange and Fiesta Bowls.

There's only a few decent bowl games that good teams go to. Every other one is trash.

Orange bowl
Sugar bowl
Rose bowl
Cotton bowl
Fiesta bowl
Peach bowl

Maybe some of the secondary bowls some remember their team going to when they had a decent year. I don't think anybody ending the season outside the top 25 really deserves the honor of playing in a bowl game, so there should really only be 12ish. Instead there's 47, 39 if you take off the new first round and quarter final games.

Under Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne, Nebraska always finished in the Top 10. So they were pretty much guaranteed to be in a big bowl game.

That's not actually true. When Osborne was getting started we went to some bowl games that I would not consider 'big." These were the Bluebonnet Bowl, the Liberty Bowl, and the Sun Bowl. Also I have very vivid memories of Nebraska getting invited to the Fiesta Bowl in the mid 70's and complaining because at the time, it was not yet considered to be a "big" bowl. And of course, we ended up losing to a fired up Arizona State team that wasn't even in the PAC 10 yet. They were still in the WAC. It wasn't until Osborne had been the head coach for about 10 years before we started regularly appearing in the more marquee bowls consistently.
