Street Racing

Post by Busguy2010 »

Just tapping into my imagination here. Last night I had a dream that I was driving in a street race in Omaha. The street in my dream doesn't exist, but I think it was loosely based on Maplewood Boulevard, as almost every time I go to the Walmart in Irvington, I usually take that neighborhood way back as an aside from the hustle of 90th. Every time I do, I always think, man this would make for a fun race, with all the twists and turns, and change in elevation.

That got me thinking this morning about places that would make good race tracks that Omaha (in my dreams) could host for a weekend. We have an abundant Boulevard system that I could imagine an open wheel race on. Turner Boulevard south of Leavenworth comes to mind.

With nascar having success with their Chicago street race, would Omaha ever have aspirations again to float the idea of a street race? Don't know if anybody remembers, but there was what appeared to be a pretty legit effort to run a street course downtown, not sure what racing league for. But to me it looked boring since all the roads were straight and 90° turns.

So, anybody else imagined racing the streets of Omaha. If you didn't before, start thinking. Any streets in your daily life that would make for a fun portion of an Omaha street race? Have fun.

Starting at Saddle Creek & Center heading north up through Military out to Sorenson would be a blast.

For a dream circular race in Omaha, I would pick the i80>i29>i480 loop around downtown core. Very wide roads, graceful turns in most places
I could imagine people on the top of the roofs of the buildings nearby i480 cheering, where the starting point and the finishing line would be, on i480.

Anything is possible in a dream.
Home sweet, home...Omaha!

I was thinking about it on and off all day. Right now I think my best street route starts just before the NW Radial and Fontenelle Boulevard intersection going eastbound. The entrance to pit road is the single lane to go east on Military, and take a right to go south on northbound NW Radial. The normal front straight is the usual southbound NW Radial. Turn 1 and pit exit are Happy Hollow Boulevard, continue cars racing and funneling to the peanut where it's impossible to pass. Just the north end of the peanut, then up north on Country Club, back to eastbound on NW Radial where at 52nd, theres a chicane to transfer to the opposite side of the median, and another at 50th to get back to the right side of the road. Lots of technical turns and elevation changes, as well as a couple long and wide sweeping turns and passing opportunities on Radial. I'm sure the Country Club residents will LOVE it 😂
