Altman's staff gets spit on at ASU

Post by nebugeater »

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/oregon-coa ... ncaab.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- Oregon coach Dana Altman is concerned about safety at Arizona State's Wells Fargo Arena after two of his staffers claim an ASU student spit at them at halftime of Saturday's night's game.

Oregon assistant coach Brian Fish told The Oregonian the student spit at him and trainer Clay Jamieson and reported the incident to arena security, but did not want charges pressed.

The incident was addressed and the student had his season tickets revoked, according to an Arizona State official.

Altman said after the Ducks' 74-72 loss it was not a good situation having visiting teams go past the student section on their way off the court at Wells Fargo Arena.

Ducks guard Jason Calliste had a verbal confrontation with at least one student late in the first half.

Speaking of which... what the heck happened to Oregon?? I guess I took my eye off of them for a while. Last I saw, they were ranked nearly in top 10... now they're sinking to bottom of the conference... the 'Ohio State' of the PAC 12 it would seem.

I'm still ok with it though :)
He was not going to get this accomplished at ISU. Hope they take advantage, as it will get tougher starting this fall!

I would expect that with all the attention, they'll begin picking up Big East worthy recruits.

I saw this article this morning

Manute Bol's 5-Star Center Son Bol Bol Commits to Oregon over Kentucky

Bol Bol, a 5-star center and the son of former NBA big man Manute Bol, committed to play his college ball for the Oregon Ducks on Monday.
The No. 3-ranked player in the class of 2018,...

Bol's commitment gives the Ducks the top recruiting class in all of college basketball, matching the football program, as Andrew Nemec of the Oregonian noted.

A towering presence at 7'2", Bol solidified himself as the No. 1 center among 2018 recruits thanks to a surprisingly versatile skill set that allowed him to expand his game beyond the paint.

Dana Altman’s Oregon team beat two Top 5 teams on the road this week. UCLA #3 and USC #5. Altman also reached 700 wins after the first win against UCLA.

McDermott Possible candidate for Iowa?

Post by nebugeater »

So, Jim Rose on KFAB has been talking for the last few days about Fran McCaffery being out in Iowa after this season. It's not a done deal for sure, but I do believe there is a better-than-average chance that he is done. I see other places reporting that he is on the hot seat, which is really hot. Michigan State coach Tom Izzo commented on it yesterday.

JR has mentioned multiple times across multiple days that Greg McDermott is a top target for Iowa. Is anyone seeing this elsewhere? Granted, I don't follow the Jays very closely other than game time and what is reported here, but I just don't see him leaving Craighton for Iowa.

McDermott Possible candidate for Iowa?

Post by almighty_tuna »

That would be extraordinarily surprising to me given that he has said he wants to end his career at Creighton. I'm expecting he'll announce his retirement at the end of his current 5yr contract extension. Iowa can target him all they want, I don't see him taking the bait.

McDermott Possible candidate for Iowa?

Coaches can say all they want but money is what moves the needle. That said, I don’t see him leaving either. It is time for Fran to go. My guess is it will be Devries, the Drake coach, maybe Chris Janz. The McDermott thing could just be Iowa throwing his name out to keep the leverage on their side for who they really want to get or maybe they really do want to make a run at him. I’d be for it.

Agree. Part of my original reason for posting this was to see if anyone was seeing this elsewhere. You mention it might be Iowa just throwing it out there. IT could just as much be Jim Rose thinking he knows what he is talking about while making things up.

No this isn’t something I had been seeing or hearing and I hadn’t read anything about this in about a week so I just googled around the interweb real quick and still didn’t see anything about it. Though, Chris Collins is another candidate that has been talked about.

McDermott Possible candidate for Iowa?

Post by skinzfan23 »

Haha, I only laugh, b/c Iowa is so bad. Their NIL money is the lowest in the Big 10, their fan support is abysmal, they have actually only had 2 games all season where the actual scanned tickets exceeded 8,000 (in a 15,000 seat arena) and their facilities are not very nice either. Granted, McDermott is from nearby Cascade, IA, but other than being close to his hometown, there would absolutely be no desire to go to Iowa.

If anything the bigger rumors I have heard that maybe Josh Dix might transfer to Creighton to be closer to his hometown (CB). Or that their big man Owen Freeman might be someone that CU is interested in as well.

Either way, if Iowa doesn't fire McCaffrey, that would be ridiculous. The man has coached 15 years and if they lose at NE on Sunday, his conference record will be exactly .500. He hasn't gotten past the 2nd round of the tournament and outside of a few upsets they pull off each year, has shown little desire to play defense and improve the team. He was always crazy and complaining at officials all the time which brought about the debut of the Francon meter. This year, I have heard that he is on medication, and it clearly appears that he is, he just stands on the sidelines with his hands in his pockets earning the new nickname "pockets McCaffrey"

A couple of other things I might add, I don't think McDermott (age 60) is looking to start a total rebuild of a program this late in his career.

Also lots of rumors that McCaffrey is headed to Indianapolis since his youngest son is going to play for Butler. One son already transferred from Iowa to Butler this year and the other is an asst at Butler.

The replies so far make me more convinced that this is just a Jim Rose stir the pot statement.

Haven't seen him mentioned for Iowa. The only Big 10 job I have seen his name attached to is Indiana. I just don't see it though. I think he is smart enough to know he has it good at Creighton. Can win enough to satisfy the fans. It's a contrast to his time at Iowa State. Indiana would be at a whole different level. I think he coaches a few more years at Creighton then retires.

Greg
This would be a great move for McDermott since he is from eastern Iowa to close out his career. He would have coached at Northern Iowa, Iowa State Creighton and Iowa. He might be ready for a change of scenery and would give him an opportunity to coach in the Big10 to close out his career. He’s been Creighton's greatest coach.

Like I mentioned, it would be a huge step back for McDermott. A few years ago he had the chance to go Ohio st but that is a whole different ball game. Iowa is dead last in NIL and would be a huge rebuilding job for whoever takes it. I can’t see Mac wanting that at this point in his career.

I’d also like to point out that another former Creighton assistant, Alan Huss, has done a remarkable job turning around the High Point program. I’m keeping an eye out for his name to be thrown into consideration for possible Iowa/Iowa St. job openings.

McCaffery out at Iowa after 15 seasons had a not so impressive 143-141 record as the Hawkeye HC.

143-131 in conference* He was 297-207 overall though. I don't like the guy but it was a successful and respectable tenure.

Any other program and he would have been fired 5-10 years ago. Iowa is ok with mediocrity. The guy won bc he scheduled one of the easiest non-con schedules year in and out. Which, in my opinion is one of the reasons he couldn’t win when it mattered. The other being lack of defensive focus. Consistently giving up 80 pts every night is not successful. He never made it past the second round of the tournament in 15 years, that’s crazy. This year fans showed their displeasure and only averaged just over 5,000 scanned tickets per game.

Not to mention his tirades on the sideline all the time. This guy is a joke and should have never been allowed to stay there this long. Crazy how many tens of millions of dollars Iowa paid him.

Agree, Iowa stayed with him to long, most of his career at Iowa was mediocre. You can only be so patient, he had plenty of time to turn the program into a consistent top tier Big10 team.

Iowa has offered the HC job to Drake coach Ben McCollum and he has accepted. He was only at Drake one year but guided Drake to its first NCAA tournament win in 54 years.

Curious to see how this pans out. McCollum had a stellar record at NWMS in DII and the one season at Drake in the MVC conference. Now it steps up a lot into the Big 10. Gotta recruit to stay good and Iowa still is pretty bad in NIL. At any rate, playing D and the winning culture should be much better for Iowa than Francis.

Seeing stuff all over twitter that Creighton is bringing in an assistant coach who will be McDermott's successor, "head coach in waiting." Alan Huss at High Point.

With this McDermott news, it’s crazy the coaching turnover at Creighton. Booth obviously now, Servais at the end of this year, followed by Coach McDermott in the next year or two. That’s 3 big jobs changing in a short period of time.

There seems to be more smoke around issues with Creighton's AD. On Unsportsmanlike Conduct they were speculating yesterday that the move was orchestrated primarily by McDermott and whether he worked more with the CU President as opposed to the AD.
