They already made a post about it, which I wish they didn't b/c its on a technicality at this point. This squad is playing great though so hopefully they go and leave no question in the title game.

Lol. I didn’t realize the Huskers have never had a tournament win…that would be pretty cool for Omaha!skinzfan23 wrote: Sun Mar 09, 2025 10:12 am Maybe they will get their first tournament win before Nebraska

Pretty cool they are in the tournament. Great publicity for this relatively new D1 program.

Yes...UNL has the "honor" of being the only school from any of the Power 5 conferences without a win in the NCAA Tournament. Heck they even lost to a 14-seed when Nebraska was a 3-seed in the early 1990's.CBJason wrote: Sun Mar 09, 2025 12:07 pmLol. Watched most of the game last night. They actually looked pretty good, their best bet would be getting a 15 seed and they might have a chance at an upset.

Re: Omaha Maverick Basketball 2024-2025
I watched both games they were in this weekend, and they looked like a completely different team than they did early in the year when I saw them playing UNI, IA St. and Minnesota. I’m really impressed with White and Sutton, both look like they could star at blue chip programs. And Sutton….for some reason he really reminds me of a young Scottie Pippen. As a grad, I’m glad they are getting the attention they are, very deserved. I hope they get the 15 seed like the announcers mentioned for better chances of an upset to continue the Cinderella ride!

Re: Omaha Maverick Basketball 2024-2025
I just got back from Sioux Falls. What an experience. After watching them win the regular season Summit league title at Baxter last week, I didn't think anything could top that feeling, but this was even better. Winning in Sioux Falls where the disappointments of just barely missing the NCAA Tournaments in 2017 and 2019 were still vivid. Being there for that 2019 loss to NDSU made for a bitter drive home.
this time, they left no doubt. Starting 5-9 and going on a 17-3 run down the stretch was so different from what we've come to expect from UNO athletics.
I love this for these core players. Guys like Marquel Sutton, JJ White, and Tony Osburn. They had to commit to being leaders. All 3 did the work. As Coach Crutchfield said, "they loved the work, and the work loved them back." I think of Frankie Fiddler right now. Saw a tweet from the the program this weekend that said, "the grass isn't always greener on the other side." That's fitting. I'm happy for Fiddler and his Big Ten Championship, but love what came to be for UNO even more.
I love this for Coach Crutchfield. A man who played for the Mavericks in both football and basketball. A coach who has made the rounds honing his craft with the likes of Oral Roberts, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Oregon, just waiting for his chance to lead his own program. Then, he gets to do it with his alma mater. He said it would be a 3 year project. It didn't look like it would come to fruition in 3 years when they were 5-9....but, he proved to be a man of his word. I thought about that as he was cutting down the nets last night how it had to feel to do this with the school he played for.
What a team. What a night.

The athletic department did a great job with the selection show watch party yesterday and they had a full house in attendance. Really glad they got the crowd that they did. The team deserved it.

Did you go? I debated going since UNO hockey didn't end up forcing a game 3 against North Dakota. Wasn't sure if you had to get there very early to get a seat.omaha79 wrote: Mon Mar 17, 2025 8:32 am The athletic department did a great job with the selection show watch party yesterday and they had a full house in attendance. Re: Omaha Maverick Basketball 2024-2025
yes. I got there early and was able to get a seat behind the team and family. The seating and room was full, and spilled out into the hallway next to the room they were using in Mammel Hall. Adrian Dowell and Coach Crutchfield spoke before the event started and both basically said "don't let anyone tell you what you can and can't accomplish, because without faith, none of this would have been possible." That was a nice sentiment.Greg S wrote: Mon Mar 17, 2025 10:39 amDid you go? I debated going since UNO hockey didn't end up forcing a game 3 against North Dakota. they had a full spread of food for those in attendance from meat, cheese, and fruit trays to trail mix, chips and salsa/chees and pretzel bites along with soda and water. The Maverick Bookstore was there selling merchandise as well.
I'm truly hopeful that this is finally the beginning of an integration of the sports into one athletic department. I wasn't always the nicest about it, but even on the old Mavpuck message board days a good 15-20 years ago, I've always insisted the biggest issue with Omaha athletics is the fact that you have a hockey program and "everything else." This was somewhat understandable in the D-II days, but persisted into the D-I era. My greatest wish is that the alums and hockey fans will start to realize that there is more to Omaha athletics, much more, than just hockey. there have been a handful of us for years attending things like basketball, baseball, and soccer, but we just need to get the city as a whole on board and to realize there is value in this product. I think we are enticingly close.
And, I think we are also close to the athletic department starting to actually treat the fans, alums, and season ticket holders with more respect than in the past, which had been an issue for years.

Went to the send off yesterday. Good turnout and had one of the AEW wrestlers again. Hoping they play well against St. John's, win or lose.

St John’s pulled away in the 2nd half. Probably one of the best second half teams in College basketball. A great season for the Mavs still.

Re: Omaha Maverick Basketball 2024-2025
Still proud of this season, team, and being an alum of UNO today. Played a nice first half, but ran out of gas. Just not as deep or as physical as St. John's. Nothing to hang their heads about. Too bad a few of those shots didn't fall in the first half. A little better shooting and a few less mistakes and could have easily been up by 7-10 at half. It just wasn't meant to be.
This championship season is neck and neck with hockey's Frozen Four in 2015 and probably surpasses it as the greatest athletic achievement in school history.
Omaha now has 14 combined Division One NCAA Tournament appearances among all their team sports. They now have 17 combined Summit League regular and tournament conference championships among all of their team sports as well.
I think we can finally put to bed the notion that moving to Division I was a "mistake".

Nice run by the Mavs this season!
Hopefully the next few years they can take a few more steps forward.
