It is a Fox Tournament and a Fox story, but this is a decent read about the finals today

I've heard some predictions that this will be the best Champions game the Crown Tournament has ever seen.

Re: Nebraska Basketball 2024-2025
The crazy thing is, and this says a ton about Nebraska's lack of historical success in the sport of basketball, but with one NCAA Tournament appearance and a win in a relatively insignificant postseason tournament, Fred Hoiberg essentially becomes the second most accomplished coach in program history behind Danny Nee.
Not saying wins and losses, because Hoibergs overall win percentage is atrocious after his horrific first few years. But, no NU coach besides Nee has more than a single NCAA Tournament appearance, and only Nee and Hoiberg have won a postseason exhibition tournament.
Crazy when you think about it. At the same time, he has a long way to go to even equal the win totals of people like Moe Iba, Doc Sadler, and Tim Miles, let alone Danny Nee or Joe Cipriano.
I hope NU fans enjoy the win and I was happy to see them get it, but I also hope that NU fans do not overstate the magnitude of what this really is, which isn't much in the grand scheme of things.

To keep things in check, at best, the Huskers can chant " we are #69!" Of course, that depends on where you place the NIT in pecking order.omaha79 wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 1:40 pm The crazy thing is, and this says a ton about Nebraska's lack of historical success in the sport of basketball, but with one NCAA Tournament appearance and a win in a relatively insignificant postseason tournament, Fred Hoiberg essentially becomes the second most accomplished coach in program history behind Danny Nee.

The Crown definitely seems to be supplanting that NIT. It will be there preferred destination for teams from the Big East, Big 10 and Big 12 at least with the Fox tie in along with the NIL money. Was impressed with the effort Fox put in with sending their top announcing teasm, and having the FInals on their network.Louie wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 2:07 pmI'd probably place the NIT well ahead of the CBC.nebugeater wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 1:45 pmTo keep things in check, at best, the Huskers can chant " we are #69!" About yesterday's game. Wow. Early on it looked like Nebraska was essentially going to lead start to finish. It just looked like UCF was invested. Then they turned it around and Nebraska got ice cold, especially end of first half to at least 5 into the second half. Crazy, crazy game and so much fun to watch.
Nebraska had a double-digit lead. Then trailed by 14 in the second half with nothing going right. Only to turn it around and win by double digits.
Such a great way to finish off the season and send of Brice and Juwan.

On the surface that may seem the case but I think all of the Teams in the Crown Tourny would have been in The NIT if they had not been invited to the Crown. They took the Crown offer because of the NIL payout. IMO, this diluted the NIT pool and the Crown ended up with a group of teams that were higher average quality than the NITLouie wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 2:07 pmI'd probably place the NIT well ahead of the CBC.nebugeater wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 1:45 pmTo keep things in check, at best, the Huskers can chant " we are #69!" Re: Nebraska Basketball 2024-2025
This seems to be correct. In the short term, Fox's goal with this is to supplant the NIT and make it the postseason destination for schools not invited to the NCAA Tournament. The NIT is quickly becoming a mid major postseason exhibition tournament. This could be good for schools like UNO down the road, but bad for the tournament and its place in the pecking order and its history. Even up until recently, there was some prestige in winning the NIT. And, I'd have given it about as much prestige as winning a football bowl game that had a big name that wasn't in the playoff structure. But now, only 3 P5 schools were even in the tournament. It was almost entirely mid majors.nebugeater wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 3:20 pmOn the surface that may seem the case but I think all of the Teams in the Crown Tourny would have been in The NIT if they had not been invited to the Crown. I hope NU fans enjoy the win and I was happy to see them get it, but I also hope that NU fans do not overstate the magnitude of what this really is, which isn't much in the grand scheme of things.
The only thing the NIT has going for it anymore is that it's sponsored by the NCAA, unlike any of the other tournaments over the years like CBI, CIT, Crown.
Longer term, I think Fox wants to use the Crown as a bargaining chip against the NCAA tournament. They will try to entice the power schools to do their own thing and maybe even forego the NCAA Tournament to crown a "true champion", so to speak. We've long known that there is a push from the P5 to break away from the NCAA model, have their own tournament structure and not share money with the "have nots". And, this is the worst timing to have a tournament like we did where there were almost no upsets and the mid majors looked more overmatched than ever. There could come a day where the actual national champion is crowned in a tournament that isn't sanctioned by the NCAA and what the NCAA does becomes the exhibition. I don't like this one bit, but think that's probably the future as more and more greed gets injected into college athletics from all angles.

Nebraska appears to have been the biggest draw not only for the fans in the stands but also for TV ratings as well (if you click on the image you can see the full set of ratings for the Crown):

I am somewhat superised that Brice Williams was not selected in the NBA draft. A lot of projections have him being selected Another victum of the overall poor season for the team and not his preformence IMO

I was really hoping he'd go to OKC (my son's favorite team-not a bandwagon fan his mom's side of the family is from there and we go to games when in town) or the Laker's (my childhood team).OmahaRedWing wrote: Fri Jun 27, 2025 3:59 pm Not official yet but supposedly Detroit is signing Brice Williams.

Brice Williams will have a chance to prove himself at the next level - albeit with a new chip on his shoulder.
Following Wednesday and Thursday's NBA draft first and second rounds, the Nebraska All-Big Ten guard signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Detroit Pistons on Friday morning. Williams was one of the top available prospects remaining by various draft boards when the draft concluded its 59 total selections on Thursday night. Nebraska went without a draft selection for the third straight draft, with the last selection coming in 2022 as Bryce McGowens was picked in the second round by the Minnesota Timberwolves who traded the pick to the Charlotte Hornets.

With Brice signing with Detroit, will be interesting to see who's currently on the roster that will be the next to the NBA? I think Mast's best bet is Europe, but who knows?
