I definitely notice the sun setting earlier now. It gets brutal here at the peak of the solstice, with sunlight beating down my west windows til almost 9pm. I just noted that now, about a month later, the sun stops baking through the windows right around about now. Almost hard to believe we're already on the downswing, and some companies already advertising their fall and Halloween themed items. Obviously quite early, but just shows what's next on the menu. I can't wait for fall. By far my favorite season.

Hope everyone is ready for an early taste at Fall with highs in the 70s for a few days coming up. Should feel amazing after these stretches of hot weather...

I woke up to see that Douglas County was in a severe thunderstorm warning around 3am... I didn't hear anything but apparently it was quite windy.

Mondamin, IA had some building damage.

Thats too bad - definitely some strong outflow pushed through the Omaha metro which prompted the warning. Wouldn't be surprised to see a repeat here tonight again. We may or may not see any precip but wouldn't shock me to still get hit by one of these outflows again if not.

Otherwise a better chance for storms in our area early Wednesday before a nice cool down after that.

So was that the tail end of the storm in Iowa? I watched Randby at 10 last night and he said there *might* be outflow, but he didn't put much emphasis on it. Didn't hear it myself, but all my patio furniture was knocked over and I'll have to see how my plants fared. Really was not expecting anything.

This was more the edge of main storm rather than outflow boundary itself. I was awake watching it on the radar and there were a number of spinny cells, some with a TVS.

Gotcha, though to clarify the outflow from the storms which pushed through the metro and surrounding areas is what caused the warnings themselves to be issued due to the strong wind behind the boundaries as they moved south/southwest. Many of the warned areas didn't get any precip at all and the storms themselves were pretty disorganized as they struggled with the cap/warm temps aloft.

Here is a radar loop showing the boundary pushing through the metro and the storms themselves staying northeast/east of the metro and much of the warned areas. Along and behind this outflow is where the strong/damaging wind occurred for most people as it pushed through.

That's crazy, it seems like we've had a lot of outflow dominant storms lately. Last night, for one, I wouldnt have known what had happened, since it technically didn't "storm" here. Then both of the last two storms had the outflow reach us far before any rain and thunder.

For what it's worth, the 18z HRRR trended WAY heavier with precip totals tomorrow overnight and Wednesday morning with a swath of 2-4+ inches of rain right across Omaha. While this is unlikely to happen (since it's just one single run so far), it's something we will have to watch to see if trends continue on the 00z run in a few hours. I'm not optimistic but for how humid it is/has been, it's certainly possible.

Severe weather potential and heavy rain is expected in the area overnight tonight and into tomorrow. Damaging wind and hail will be the primary threat with these storms (with the main threat damaging wind). Otherwise there will be some flooding issues in spots as well and very well could end up being in or very close to Omaha itself. The HRRR is still showing a swath of 1-3+ inches of rain anyway that goes right through Omaha.

Yes I was dumbfounded to walk out on my patio about 7 am Monday morning, after sleeping soundly overnight, to find my heavy glass patio table completely upside down, and 6 potted plants blown over. I had left our patio umbrella fully open overnight as the forecasts I read said winds would be under 5 mph overnight, like they had basically been all day. That’s what did it to the table. We also had two 15’ long tree limbs snap off on two separate trees. Fortunately the umbrella and table and all the pots somehow survived unscathed. The tree damage cost me $200 to cut up and haul away. Almost the 1 year anniversary of the derecho like blast we got on July 31 last year. That was a terrible storm.
I was able to watch my patio cam history to see the umbrella spinning wildly before it took off for the yard, taking the table part of the way with it. 3:28.25 am.
It is incredibly rare to see a windstorm come in from the east northeast. I have no memory of that ever happening here in Omaha before this one.

Im glad im not the only one to scratch my head about that storm on Monday morning.

The crazy part is that it had that much vigor, and it wasn't even the storm itself, just its outflow.

From the subsequently just issued HWO...
Much of the forecast area will receive 1 to 1.5 inches of rain,
but expect small areas of 4 inches or more. This may lead to
flooding, and a flood watch has been issued through Wednesday
morning.

Yeah... 0.75" to 1.5" for the metro seems reasonable. 5+" does not.

I have no idea how it got that full. It's not near a downspout. Maybe the neighbor's kids filled it up? I know that the muddy non-grass near my back door was muddy enough to have been 1-2 inches, but not sloppy like 5+ would have caused.

I never have been a fan of every neighbor's rain guage. I dont even trust the plain old one I have. Too many trees and topography can influence any one reading, unless its above the tree line and on the relative side of a hill in which the direction the wind is blowing the rain. Too many variables on the amateur level.

To me personally observing, it was a fairly remarkable rate, but it didn't last all that long. It felt to me exactly like what the NWS reported, which was .81".

Last I saw, the NWS had us in a 40% chance of rain (as of yesterday afternoon). Gotta love the random slow moving storms that drops several inches of rain and causes localized flooding though.

Woke up to another wet morning where I live, as the gentle overnight rain continues at 9:30 am. About a half inch or a bit more I’m guessing. Enough that the road crew repaving part of our street showed up, saw the puddles where they had planned to pour concrete this morning, then packed up and left.

That's seriously the slowest road repair project I have ever seen! We didn't get anywhere near that much rain and I think they would have packed up and left if it was even partly cloudy...

I thought I heard it raining pretty hard last night, but was too asleep to look.

And yet again, I go to bed after hearing The Randby say "Ehhhh, don't worry about it... 10% chance". He's been off a lot lately. Im sure they've been covering their tracks all morning.

Yes on that! My neighbor 3 houses down was planning a garage sale for the weekend after Memorial Day, but the crews were going hot and heavy on it that week, even working on a Saturday! So she postponed the sale for a few weeks, thinking the work would be done by mid June. Nope. They took 3 full weeks off, then tore up a small section near her driveway and paved that, but the barricades stayed up, and with one lane closed no one can park on the entire block, not even the mowing company trucks. They then took 2 more full weeks off before starting in again just this week. My neighbor has postponed her sale repeatedly and would love to be able to have it so she can empty her garage of sale items and use it as a garage for her cars.
They did tear up the remaining broken concrete yesterday, which sealed our other neighbor’s pickup truck into his driveway. They gave him no warning that his driveway would be blocked until they install the new concrete, and it cures. Best he can hope for is probably Sunday or Monday.

1 year anniversary today of the July 31st storm. Last year at this time a good chunk of Omaha was without power and many trees down or damaged. Easily a top 5 worst storm since I’ve lived in Omaha which goes back to the mid 80’s.

Now that you mention it, there was that storm, and another one the year before. I was without power for 6ish days for both, two consecutive years. I hope nothing will top the Elkhorn tornado. That was easily the most legit tornado that has hit the Metro in my lifetime.

But as far as straight-line winds, I agree. Probably last year, and that one in 2007 or 2008 (I forget) stick out to me.

I shutter the thought if that thing had a track just 10 miles or so to the east. That was very close to being a major catastrophe, and it looked bigger and more intense than the 1975 tornado. I'm so glad it didn't hit more in the city.

The smoke is mucking up what would be a beautiful stretch outside. Its kinda crazy how well you can see it hanging in the air. Its irritating my eyes and sinuses a fair bit.

We've had so much smoke the last few summers, I'm inclined to say the NWS should come out with a regular forecast product for smoke, much like they have an extra one for freezing rain in the cooler months.

I only became aware of this useful website yesterday: Douglas County Health Department Air Quality Monitoring. Unfortunately, Particulate Matter 2.5 (combustion byproducts) are forecasted to remain elevated tomorrow.
