Johnson Sash and Door building (1412 Military Ave)

Post by iamjacobm »

I must have missed this on the planning board a couple months ago, but noticed it for the city council next week. The building on the NW corner of Hamilton and Military set to be redeveloped into 8 apts and commercial space on the ground level. Grow Omaha already posted about it.

Across the street, plans call for the redevelopment of the long-vacant, Johnson Sash and Door building at 1412 Military Avenue. The company closed permanently in 2018. According to a planning department application for rezoning and a Planned Unit Redevelopment Overly District, the structure will be transformed into a mix-used building with ground floor commercial space and eight residential units on the second floor. The first floor will be a commercial bakery, coffee shop and café with an outdoor patio.

I love Military ave. In that stretch. Its one of the best examples of what's left of pre-car culture that you can still look at, see, and interact with. There's probably still streetcar tracks under that surface.

I was at the ribbon cutting of the Beltline Trail and they announced it will be Ooh De Lally opening this space. The residential units will be for the employees of Ooh De Lally

Ooh De Lally Apartments and Bakery (1412 Military Av)

Ooh De Lally expands into north Omaha, bringing jobs, housing, and second chances
Melissa Wright, KMTV wrote:
Ooh De Lally is growing beyond its Dundee roots — opening a new space near 40th and Military that will include a bakery, coffee shop, and eight apartment units to support employees transitioning back into society.

The nonprofit restaurant hires and trains people who were formerly incarcerated, offering hands-on culinary skills, job readiness, and housing resources to help them rebuild their lives.

Executive Director Tim Steinbich says the expansion comes after outgrowing their first location in just over a year — a sign of both the restaurant’s popularity and the growing demand for re-entry opportunities in the community.

Streetview of the building

Sounds like it could be a nice little anchor for the neighborhood. Hamilton Street has a lovely streetcar era business district that could turn into something quite with some investment.

this is great! growing up around there i’d always wished something more lively was going on and felt it was so underutilized and abandoned in many buildings. if you go down they’re you’ll see that there’s much more going on too!
