It is crazy to me as I travel for work how every airport seems to be wrapping up construction, in the middle of it or getting ready to start. Here's another one:

Dallas Love Field is set for a major overhaul. Plans are underway for a dramatic transformation of the airport, located seven miles north of downtown Dallas.

The project comes nearly a decade after the completion of a new passenger terminal at Love. “I get a lot of ‘We just did this. We just built a new airport,'” said Director of Aviation Patrick Carreno.

Since the easing of federal restrictions on flights from Love Field in 2014, traffic has boomed. The airport handled roughly 8.5 million passengers that year. The number swelled to 18 million in 2024. “I don’t think anybody realized how many people would use this facility,” Carreno said.

Traffic is only expected to grow. Carreno says planners believe the airport can handle another 6 million passengers a year. But that will require major changes.

There is one major hurdle. Under federal law, Love Field is limited to its current 20 gates. So planners must figure out how to grow the airport without making it any bigger.

The process has taken nearly two years. It’s known as the Love Field Master Plan. “We’ve taken a fresh look at everything,” said Carreno.

The details are not final, but here’s an idea of what travelers can expect.

Very true and frankly it's long overdo. Many US airports are in pretty rough shape compared to others in the western world.

If we, as a country, have collectively decided that air travel is the best and most efficient way to travel long distances domestically, then our infrastructure should reflect that. Way overdue if you ask me... there are a lot of US airports that really stink.

How about internationally? Phnom Penh’s new 2.1 billion dollar airport just opened a couple weeks ago. Built to handle 50 million passengers (although that won't happen for MANY years). The only thing I don't like about these new airports being built around the world (or high speed rail lines) is that they have to build them so far out of town to be able to acquire all the land needed.

Though I would argue with the video's tagline that Long Beach is LA's easiest airport.

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) has been "right-sizing" following its de-hubbing by US Airways 25 years ago. The old design had travelers take a train from the Landside Terminal to the X-shaped Airside Terminal. Using space made available by eliminating roughly 15 excess gates, the airport has constructed a new Landside Terminal that is directly connected to the Airside Terminal, removing the train trip entirely. The new terminal is nearing completion and looks pretty sweet. It's giving me mild Madrid-Barajas vibes.

Agreed, Burbank is definitely easier than LAX, but LB is the real easy button for that metro.

For the past 5 years or so I travel to Chesapeake VA for work about once a year. The last couple trips I noticed ongoing construction at Norfolk's airport which I fly into. I wanted to see what all is being done. Found the following video. They are doing about $1billion in renovations. This report mentioned an onsite hotel (that part is delayed and they are looking for a new operator for it). Very nice and easy airport that should be better when finished. This area is absolutely booming.

Key West is nearing completion of their new terminal. Finally there are jet bridges so passengers need not get caught out in the rain. For such a small airport (with only one very short runway) the new terminal is bright and airy with tall ceilings and more than enough bars and restaurants.
