Saw that on the way in to the radio station this morning. Stopped and got a photo after the show.

Streetcar maintenance facility:

I think that's a concrete pour, under that black tarp there?

Any semblance of progress gets me super-excited, but that's just me.

You're not the only one! Practically 30 years of talking about it, and its now finally happening. I find it almost surreal.

And the maintenance facility is the coolest part of the construction IMO.

A video I saw about the KC Streetcar's maintenance facility really blew me away. It's going to be exciting watching the construction of our facility progress - especially at a time when we have to wait for all the boring underground utility work to get done before we see any track be laid down.

I find this part of the project pretty interesting as well and have wondered a few basic things: How much if any power for the facility ifself or streetcar battery assist will come directly from the OPPD transformer/substation it is next to. Also, how esoteric is the maintenance and what kinds of things will be done here? How many employees will it have and can they be hired locally? What kind of specialized training will be required?. Also, since the cars are from Spain is there some kind of distribution hub for parts in the US or will the facility have an on site machine shop for fabricating parts? Can't wait for this thing to start running.

There is a fascinating Youtube video about the Kansas City streetcar maintenance facility, to give you a picture of what ours may be like.

KC also uses the same streetcar we'll be using, so should answer a decent number of these questions

On the streetcar maintenance facility...
Image
It's not gone vertical yet, but there's a lot of work they put into it in the past week, especially on the northwest quadrant of the structure.

Looks close to getting ready for a pour soon.

I think most of us here do. But can't wait to see more actual construction like the maintenance facility or the actual tracks being laid.

True, but the installation of guideways and construction of stops etc. represents something significant to me at least. It's something physical that is being installed into the street surface rather than just prep work. The fact that the rails themselves must be just around the corner with a start date potentially being provided at the next streetcar update is 10 lbs of excitement in a 5 lb bag.

I'm have been seeing the next wave of complainers on social media. Now all the comments are about streetcar construction. Slowing down through these construction zones is inconvenient. Or poor businesses...they are suffering loss of sales from the construction. See the streetcar is hurting us. LOL! What a joke!

Any infrastructure upgrade goes through this. You don't see North Saddle Creek screaming streetcar is the devil comments because it's harder to get to St Peffers. The streetcar construction is not stopping you from shopping in these zones. The only thing stopping people is a mindset. They want to park 5 feet from the door and be ushered in. It shouldn't be poor businesses, but poor citizens for being so lazy.

I like that the new Farnam St bridge has an ornamental obelisk on each corner. Glad they are making it aesthetically pleasing. I had asked about the design of the bridge way back at the streetcar open house over a year ago, but at that time they didn't have any details.

Ok, still just the concrete. I was wondering if they were adding lights, signs, or art to them.

I think some lights would look nice. CB has these at several intersections on Broadway and they look good, but when they were being put in 10 years ago, a lot of people thought they would have lights similar to the large pillars entering CB from the west or the ones on HWY 275 and S 24th St.

There are some art deco style pillars on the new 180th bridge over the old Lincoln hwy. Copying that would be a nice addition.

I imagine they’ll use nice gloss black fencing, like the aforementioned 180th street bridge and the new bridge south of 72nd & I-80.

I suspect this might be the first stop they start constructing when they start in January, unless construction of the Childrens Museum puts that off. Otherwise my bet is for 10th & Capitol. But what do I know?
