WB I-80: Q St - Giles Rd; 144th St Exit

Post by BRoss »

Construction has begun on two projects on westbound I-80. One is adding an auxiliary lane from the I-L-Q Streets interchange to Giles Road. The other is adding an auxiliary lane from about a mile east of the 144th Street exit to around the bridge over 132nd & W Giles Rd. Bridge repairs will also be done both directions. Only two lanes will be open during construction, which will last until fall.

NDOT update about construction start

I was on I80 at 2PM yesterday afternoon, and maybe it was just folks getting used to this new lane closure, but it was practically at a standstill. I'd hate to imagine what it was like at rush hour...

The notice NDOT released said to expect significant delays.

This area wouldn't have delays if:

1. The 45mph off-ramp speed limit sign was removed from the Interstate and put ON the off-ramp where it belongs (that would be AFTER the grass starts).

2. If people would understand that off-ramps are for slowing down (after the grass), not the Interstate itself or the split of the concrete. Plus, if you take your foot off the gas going uphill the vehicle will automatically slow down, not needing you to hit the brakes (again, on the interstate). Hitting your brakes on the interstate is ONLY supposed to happen in emergencies. It is literally in the Nebraska Driving Manual.

My usual cycling route runs along the Papio Creek and under I-80. Finally remembered to snap a photo of the auxiliary lane supports for the extra WB lane.

Funny thing is those have been there for years. I really wonder what the back story is on this. From Google Streetview, it looks like they were constructed in 2014. Did they start to widen it once in the past and then stop partway through? I'm curious on whether they will reuse these when that portion gets underway. I guess I don't see why they wouldn't.

Yeah, maybe they did that when the widened 80 for the EB onramp? Idk but it'll be interesting to see if they get utilized.

I would imagine if they were going to replace them, they would have started on them by now as they'd probably take the longest to complete.

It does look like they were working on widening the eastbound bridge at that time so they maybe were putting these in for later.

It's going to be a mess until probably late fall. You can see the progress on the 511 cam.

The last bike ride I went down that trail I could see the dirt work for the EB approach over West Papio Creek was getting pretty near where I'd expect concrete work for the wingwall to happen soon. I'll be on the trail this weekend (hopefully tomorrow) again and will shoot some pics.

Forgot to post these on Wednesday. They've added what looks like a layer of wood on the auxiliary lane supports and forms for concrete are being erected on the approaches.

Thanks for the update! I saw that they got these in on the 511 cams and have poured most of the new lane and shoulder over the last few weeks.

For 144th, it looks like most of the new lane leading to the exit has been poured and on the ramp itself, traffic has moved onto the new pavement for the new lane. The old side has a section that was taken out and it doesn't look like a lot has been done for at least a couple weeks. I'm guessing they are focusing on getting the bridge on I-80 to the east done.

It probably won't be fully done until December. The bridge widening still has a ways to go. And then I'm guessing the westbound side of the bridge will get an overlay like they've been doing to the eastbound side.

That too bad. I still can't figure out why its such a cluster! Even at noon on a Saturday, it regular backs up to the 80/680 split...

Maybe they'll open the new lane to around the bridge at some point soon. They finished pouring it probably a few weeks ago now. But it's still going to go down to two lanes at the bridge, so still going to be a bottleneck.

Looks like they are making good progress decking the bridge. Guessing they'll pour it in the next couple weeks.

Interstate 80 from Q to Giles is nearly done and almost ready to open. All the concrete work is done. The bridge is done, I’d assume they are probably gonna put a little metal guard rail at the end of the bridge. Hydroseeding is about 2/3 done and just a little cleanup needed..

There is a story stating that DOT is going to need more time to complete this project due to weather delays.......you have got to be kidding me. Seriously one of the best/driest falls we have had in recent years and they are using weather as an excuse.

Mid-late summer was fairly wet. Maybe that's what initially set them behind. I know it sure did with my backyard projects.

I think the main issue was that over the summer we rarely had extended dry periods. We seemed to get rain every few days, which kept the soil wet.

Looks like there is a traffic switch tomorrow night where they'll shift it to the right lanes so they can overlay the left lanes.

I'm surprised they didn't make the exit with Giles two lanes like they did with 144th. I assumed they would like what was shown in MTIS.
