Pickleman's is good but I think the sandwiches are too small.

I can only get so excited about sandwiches. It's, for the most part, just cold deli meat on bread. It's like getting excited about PBJ or cold cereal. Even "the best" is just meh. :)

I used to really love Firehouse, but the one in Papillion just isn't very good and that is the closest to my house now that I am not working in the office at AV.

Lately, we get Potbelly every Sunday and it is pretty good. They have a special where you get 4 sandwiches, 4 chips and 4 cookies for $19.99.

Jimmy John's (168th & Harrison)

Post by ChadJK »

I see the Jimmy John's at 6720 S 168th St (northwest corner of 168th & Harrison) has moved to 16869 Audrey St (southwest corner of 168th & Harrison). It looks like their old location is going to be a Pickleman's now.

I've always sort of thought that. Even years ago I can remember saying, "Do we really need Subway, Blimpie, Quiznos, Schlotzky's,, and Little King?" The brands have changed, but the saturation remains. Way too many players in the sandwich space. Of course, I'm not a big fan of sandwich shops in general, so perhaps I'm just hypersensitive to "another frickin' sandwich shop" opening. :) It's sliced meat and bread, people. Why are you lining up to pay for it? It's one step better than a PBJ or bowl of cold cereal. Just sayin'. Now, give me a yummy HOT sandwich and I'm happy.

I feel like at least the sandwich shops are better than those now. There is only a Blimpie left at Eppley, no Quiznos and Schlotzkys somehow remains. Of course we'll always have Subway and Little King.

Now we have Jersey Mikes, Penn Station, Potbelly, Jasons Deli, Which Which, Gandolfos, Goodcents, Picklemans, Firehouse Subs, and of course Jimmy Johns. They must make considerable profit per sandwich for as many as we have.

I believe Potbelly features hot sandwiches. So does Gandolfo’s, Jason’s and Schlotzsky’s. For some reason JJ’s can’t heat or toast a sandwich. I still love their sandwiches, though. When our fridge went out a few months back I became a regular at a nearby JJ’s. I actually really enjoy the sandwiches at all the shops I have mentioned.

I ordered Jimmy John's for delivery a few days ago and like 45 minutes went by and nothing. I assumed maybe they were really busy and a driver was out sick or something. I finally get a call from the restaurant...

JJ: "We're unable to deliver your sandwich. Do you want us to cancel the order or would you be willing to come pick it up?"
Me: "I can pick it up, but out of curiosity, why does your app say delivery is an option if it's not an option?"
JJ: "We have no way of changing that."
Me: *Remembering that JJ's has disabled delivery before during severe weather so I know the stores can turn it off, but I don't want to get into an argument*
Me: "Umm... okay. I'll be there shortly."
Me: *Drives to JJ's , walks inside, and tells them the name on the order*
JJ: "Hi, Sorry about that. Here's your food."
Me: "So, you don't have any drivers?"
JJ: "Not in the winter."
Me: "Can I get the delivery fee refunded?"
JJ: "Oh, umm... sure. I can't actually refund it to your card, but I can get you a store credit. Just tell us next time you're here that you have a credit on file. It will only work at this location."
Me: "If I hadn't of asked for the refund, were you just going to pocket the fee for a service you never provided? If you're cancelling deliveries you should automatically be crediting delivery fees without customers having to ask."
JJ: *Blank stare*
Me: *Trying to lighten the mood by smiling and being curious instead of irritated*
Me: "So, no delivery drivers?"
JJ: "We use third party delivery services and it's really hard to get them to take an order when the roads are icy. So, I have to call one customer after another and tell them we can't deliver their order."
Me: "I thought you guys had your own drivers."
JJ: "Not since COVID."
Me: *Clearly recalling that COVID was 5 years ago, but a guy in a JJ's uniform with a JJ's sign on his car from this same JJ's location delivered me a sandwich like 6 months ago. Also, confused as to why he said they don't employ drivers in winter, but then changed it up to say they haven't had their own drivers since COVID. So, which is it? But, I don't want to be too argumentative, so I drop it.*
Me: "Okay. Well, you guys should really talk to corporate about being able to turn off deliveries when you don't have a driver and not enough people are working the delivery services on a particular evening."
JJ: "Yeah."
Me: "Have a nice night."
JJ: "Thanks. Bye."

I hate feeling like I am being a "Karen," but damn. :grr:

So, Jimmy John's is no longer doing their own deliveries and is relying on third party delivery services (Door Dash, GrubHub, Uber Eats, etc.)? So much for "freaky fast" delivery. I thought part of their business model was limiting their delivery area to only the addresses they could deliver to in 10 minutes so they can be "freaky fast." That's never going to happen with third party delivery services.

Has anyone else heard this or experienced it?

JJ in Fremont uses their own drivers, I am sure. A third party would not have the JJ thing on top of their car. Maybe they use both, don't know about that

I literally received a JJ order on saturday from a driver with a JJ sign doohickey on their car. This feels like a single franchisee’s decision. Which one was it?

I'm about 99% positive the 114th and Dodge location had a deliver driver in the parking lot yesterday or the day before.

Assuming they are actually given 40 hour work weeks(when they're likely not), that's $31,200 a year. I didn't come in today for an argument so I'll just leave it at that.

The franchisee wrote me an email and said
Thank you for taking the time to share this, and I’m very sorry for the frustration this experience caused. I understand how disappointing and inconvenient this situation was, especially with the conflicting information.

To clarify our delivery process: we do have our own in-house drivers, but when we’re unable to staff enough drivers for certain shifts, the store supplements with third-party delivery services. We use both, depending on availability, and I apologize that this wasn’t communicated clearly.

Regarding the delivery fee and why the store offered a credit: the in-store system cannot process partial refunds, so when a delivery driver can’t be secured, the team offers a credit and removes the tip. This is meant to prevent the added stress of having to void the entire order, reorder for pick-up, and then wait for the original charge to reverse, which can take 5–7 business days to reflect back to your account. If you’d prefer a partial refund instead of the credit, we can process that on the back end. If you’re able to send a picture of your receipt or provide the check number, we can take care of that for you.

Thank you again for sharing your experience with us. Your feedback is important, and we want to make sure this is handled properly.

Best regards,
Customer Service Team
So, the guy I spoke with just didn't know what the heck he was talking about and tried to fill the gaps with his wild guesses. lol

I usually have a really good experience with their Gretna location. Everyone is friendly. Food is never incorrect. Delivery is super fast. So, this was just such an oddity.

By the way, if anyone is interested. This is the franchisee for around here:

I have a JJ's in my neighborhood and rarely order delivery because it's not far to go to pick up and I don't like paying extra. But I happened to do so maybe a year or more ago. I was not feeling like leaving the house and chose JJ's mainly because they had their own delivery drivers nearby. I ended up ordering a toasted sub, but then shortly after got a text about Uber delivering my order and the link provided showed them coming from across town. I was furious that the one time I ordered delivery, and on top of that a hot sub, that they pulled this.

So I immediately called and cancelled my order. The Uber driver texted me when they got to the store and found out and asked if I cancelled my order. I replied that yeah, I never would have ordered if I knew some third-party delivery service would be fulfilling it. Despite not being screwed over by Uber Eats charging more for every item, I avoid these services like the plague because they are literally a scam IMO.

They did tell me on the phone about how they outsource when they either don't have drivers or enough drivers, but they really need to be upfront about their driver situation so people can know to not order when they are outsourcing.

So, instead of "Freaky Fast" you got Freaky Frustrating.
