Re: Kansas City Chiefs
Okay, this is totally a pipe dream, but come along and dream with me. I'll preface by saying in no world do I see the Chiefs leaving KC, but I've been seeing a lot of speculative articles suggesting that since the tax deal didn't go through for the Chiefs, that opens a door for them to consider other cities. If not for real, then at least to leverage KC into getting what they want.
So, say a couple years down the road, the Chiefs get serious about wanting a new stadium, and since they got snubbed by KC voters recently, they go ahead and open up bidding for other cities to court them in... Omaha would almost certainly have to put their name in the hat, wouldn't they? Omaha is already basically a Chiefs city, and Nebraska is already a Chiefs state. Many people in Omaha drive to Chiefs games and the cities are already close to each other, so it wouldn't be a big move. Plus the Chiefs are already a regional team, you have to think all the fans in Nebraska, Iowa, south Dakota wouldn't be lost, so there'd be little doubt we could still fill a 65,000 seat stadium, since it is more of a regional team. I mean, yeah, a long shot for sure, but it would make more sense than them moving to a new city outside the region, like San Antonio, for instance, is one of the cities being talked about.
So just imagine, Omaha puts through a plan to shoehorn another stadium in along the riverfront, let's say along Abbott drive, just north of the Carter Lake border. This in turn becomes the catalyst for Omaha to also build that light rail system I've been talking about for years. There's a station right in front of the stadium, and people fly into Omaha to see games and never have to use a car to explore the city. Omaha transforms practically overnight from a midsized bridesmade city, to one of north America's most prosperous cities.
One can dream, right?

Sounds like you need to get in touch with Rod Yates to tell him to drop the hockey idea and partner with the chiefs! Lol
Seriously though, I get your enthusiasm, I really do but even I don’t think they’ll be leaving the KC metro. The Kansas side will be very willing to keep them there.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I do NOT think they'll ever leave the KC metro, and yeah, every city around there will be in line and do everything they can to get the Chiefs to go to their city if KC proper can't get it done. But it is fun to think about. If something crazy happened and they were taking offers from other cities, Omaha actually wouldn't be a bad option. Pretty much a Chiefs city already, and it also would be fun to split the state of Nebraska, as the western side is Broncos nation.CBJason wrote: Thu May 16, 2024 11:38 am Sounds like you need to get in touch with Rod Yates to tell him to drop the hockey idea and partner with the chiefs! I think all of the articles I'm seeing that are speculating them leaving are just blowing smoke. BUT you never knowwwww
At the very least, it could be interesting to see if they do try and leverage KC by opening up their options. I think Omaha would be foolish NOT to at least get in on the conversation of that does happen.

I think if the Chiefs move it will be within the KC Market. Most likely out by the Legends/Speedway. The Royals are most likely still headed to downtown KC, North KC, or downtown KCK.Busguy2010 wrote: Thu May 16, 2024 2:34 pmYeah, don't get me wrong, I do NOT think they'll ever leave the KC metro, and yeah, every city around there will be in line and do everything they can to get the Chiefs to go to their city if KC proper can't get it done. I agree with this. I think either they'll find a way to stay where they are with stadium renovation, build new where Kauffman stadium is, or if none of that works out, they'll move out by the speedway.Greg S wrote: Fri May 17, 2024 9:57 am I think if the Chiefs move it will be within the KC Market. It does. Who knows what they'd go for... enclosed stadiums are the new standard though, and there hasn't been an open air stadium built since.. ? Was it New Meadowlands? 15ish years ago? Anyway, those January playoff games have been classics lately, so as long as they're going to be as good as they are, I want them to keep that aesthetic.

I'm personally all for it! If they want brand spanking new facilities and kansas wants to pay up, let it happen! It'll still be in the KC Metro, and it'd be no worse than when the 49ers moved from San Francisco to Santa Clara.CBJason wrote: Tue Jun 18, 2024 7:16 pm The push to get the chiefs and royals is on!

Re: Kansas City Chiefs
From the Governors Facebook post:
Governor Laura Kelly
The Kansas City Chiefs are coming to Kansas!
Kansas will be home to a new state-of-the-art domed stadium, opening for the 2031 season. And let me tell you - it’s going to be loud!
The Chiefs are also building a new training facility. A new team headquarters. A new entertainment district. All right here in Kansas.
This is a massive economic win for the state - over 20,000 jobs, over $4 billion in economic impact – and it doesn’t pull a single dollar from the state budget or create any new taxes.
We’re making Kansas the best place in America to live, work, and raise a family.

I think Arrowhead is very loud, but there really isn't anything super special about it. It is similar to the other football venues built around that time frame 50 years ago.Linkin5 wrote: Mon Dec 22, 2025 3:44 pm Absolute shame. Arrowhead was a football specific stadium built in an era when new stadiums were predominantly multi-use. Additionally, that loudness comes from the stadium having a sharper incline in seating than most other stadiums. So no, Arrowhead was special when it was built.skinzfan23 wrote: Mon Dec 22, 2025 4:15 pmI think Arrowhead is very loud, but there really isn't anything super special about it. Dallas did a mixed use development around their team HQ/practice facility in Frisco I could see the Chiefs doing something similar but smaller scale in Olathe.

There is already some entertainment and shopping development in the area the new stadium will be built as well as some major parking nearby. I expect more development will follow once the stadium is established.
The Truman Sports Complex was surrounded by largely sketchy neighborhoods. I never understood why there was never really "a scene" developed around it. It's like people just want to get out of there and go home.

The Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos are now both scheduled to move to new stadiums the same year, 2031. However, there are some interesting differences in approach.
Chiefs - domed stadium with 65,000 to 68,000 seats, for a net loss of about eight to ten thousand seats.
Broncos - retractable roof on stadium, with about 80,000 seats, for a net gain of about four thousand seats.
The Broncos are also not possibly alienating fans, by moving to another city and state. However in both cases we’ll see who becomes unhappy, when they try to renew season tickets in 2031.

Eh, I think it's kind of ridiculous that Denver is building a new stadium when Mile High isn't that old.
Both teams are doing what the rest of the NFL is doing - capitalism at it's finest by creating entertainment districts. Eventually, only Lambeau will remain as one of the old great stadiums.

I'm really disappointed that the Chiefs are building a domed stadium. Football should be played out of doors.
As for being located in Kansas City, KS instead of Kansas City, MO—no big deal either way. All part of the same metro area.
I will note that Missouri has now lost both of their NFL teams: the Rams and the Chiefs.

So the Kansas City Chiefs are moving from Kansas City to Kansas City, which begs the question are they going to remain the Kansas City Chiefs or become the Kansas City Chiefs? I can see Kansas City having trouble with the Chiefs calling themselves Kansas City when they should really be Kansas City.
Anyways, lovely to see Kansas giving a guy worth $25 billion an additional $1.8 billion to move a business that will generate sales tax for the state about 20-30 days per year.

If you really want to go deep:
Missouri has lost...
Kansas City Scouts NHL moved to Denver and became the Colorado Rockies in 1976 (now the New Jersey Devils)
Kansas City/Omaha Kings NBA: moved to Sacramento in 1984
Kansas City Wizards MLS Soccer, renaming to Sporting Kansas City after they moved to Kansas City, KS in 2010
Kansas City Athletics MLB ("A's") moved to Oakland in 1967
Side note: MLB expansion awarded KC (Royals) and Seattle (Pilots) new franchises in 1968 to begin play in 1971. The Missouri senate forced MLB to begin playing in both cities in 1969. Seattle wasn't ready with infrastructure or anything and the team quickly tanked and became the Milwaukee Brewers
St Louis NFL Cardinals moved to Arizona in 1987
St Louis Rams NFL moved from LA in 1995 and back to LA in 2015
St Louis Hawks NBA moved to Atlanta in 1968
St Louis Browns MLB moved and became the Baltimore Orioles in 1954
Spirits of St Louis ABA, folded in 1976 before the NBA/ABA merger
