Allegiant adds GUF from OMA. Looks like start date is May 21st.
Gulf Shores is in a very pretty part of Alabama. GUF is already the third-busiest airport in the state. Foley and Daphne are nice-sized towns. Buc-ee's, Wawa and Publix--what more do you need? :-)

Too bad that G4's seats are cinderblocks.
Really cool area!

I wonder why cargo operations are up so sharply year over year? Almost 25%!

The DC by 370 and HWY 50 came online in like September or something like that.

I don't follow cargo anywhere near as closely as I do commercial passenger #'s but I'm doubting it is amazon related, especially based on where my orders are coming from. Amazon flew planes from Fort Worth to Omaha for about a year between 2022 to 2023. I'm guessing most of the stuff (and again would check out from my orders) is coming ground to Omaha.

I don't pay attention to commercials all that often, but Allegiant ran an ad on KETV during the 6 p.m. news specifically highlighting fares to Orlando/Sanford. Probably trying to head of Breeze at LNK, but this is the first time in a long time that I can recall an airline running a targeted ad in Omaha.

Allegiant keeps expanding here in Des Moines which accounts for much of the gains over here! New Burbank and Philly nonstop service starts in the spring too. My cousin's family of 6 just flew back to Des Moines from Florida on Allegiant, they live in Lincoln. (times and prices are better I was told vs Omaha only 2x a week to Tampa on Allegiant.). Another friend and his wife from Omaha flew to Orange County from Des Moines this weekend, he said prices were less than half of what it was to fly from Omaha. The bleed from western Iowa and Nebraska is getting significant! Next time I go to DSM airport, I'm going to take some time to study the license plates and report back!

On the other side, saw a friend on facebook that traveled from des moines to kansas city to fly out yesterday on Spirit and he took a photo on the plane with 5 other friends that just happened to be on same flight as they were....so that's 7 people from dsm that drove to mci yesterday to get a cheaper flight...I'm sure there are a ton more like him too. Airlines like Spirit, Allegiant and Frontier can really pull from a far distance to get cost conscious travelers.

Lots of Allegiant adds here in Des Moines all the time. Billboards, radio, some TV etc. I'm surprised they just started advertising from Omaha. Could have something to do with Breeze or some other stratagy, would love to have ears inside some of these companies. I'd surprised the ad is to Orlando and not to their new destination of Gulf Shores so maybe that is a Breeze target.

I'm assuming it was weather related diversions. Some airports were closed for a time.

Like Bob said it is weather related. Chicago airports were particularly bad on Saturday, Omaha also obviously likely wasn't great at times either. Most if not all of these flights wouldn't have had passengers at all.
Bob from Omaha wrote: Sun Nov 30, 2025 9:55 pm I'm assuming it was weather related diversions. Some airports were closed for a time.
It wasn't necessarily "diversions." These were more re-positioning flights than anything. i.e. Southwest 8804 that flew to Albany's plane arrived from Austin and was supposed to operate a flight to Midway. That flight got cancelled. Southwest decided the plane and crew would be better served in Albany to get a plane in position for a cancelled Midway to Albany flight the next day.

Similar situation for Skywest 4184. That plane arrived from MSP was supposed to go to DTW. The flight got cancelled. The plane/crew got sent to GSO to fly a GSO-DTW flight where the inbound DTW-GSO was also cancelled.

I don't see the Traverse City flight, but presumably it was a similar situation. Skywest also had a plane for United that got sent to Omaha from Nashville and then to Providence and then to Milwaukee all empty.

Southwest flew a plane Saturday night from Kansas City to operate the morning DAL flight on Sunday, etc.

This will be good to get fares down! $69 each way it looks. They are also adding DSM-PHX too.

That is a really odd addition. You've already got Southwest and American flying to PHX and Allegiant to Mesa.

With the number of travelers on the route, it tends to make sense that Frontier could make this work. What doesn't make sense is it starts 2 weeks after spring break. Flights are Monday, Wednesday and Fridays.

Wondering how much of the decline is due to cancellations. Carrier airops are up over 7%.

Last December OMA carried over 400k so should/could finish over 5.2M

Potentially most if not all of it. We knew seats were supposed to be up over last year. The 29th alone, 10% of flights were cancelled.

Not much chatter online about the Allegiant / Sun Country merger. I'm hoping this gives us a new destination or two.

A lot of it depends on what they actually want from Sun Country. On its face, there is hardly any route overlap. Any new routes would basically come from dismantling the existing Sun Country network out of MSP and allocating the planes elsewhere. The extent to which that occurs and where the plans would go is basically impossible to tell from the outside.

I'm mostly just surprised there's not much chatter. I haven't checked airliners but the flyertalk post had just one reply when I checked yesterday.

I just checked airliners.net It's a 5 page thread. Ha! Time to go see what they say.

Yeah flyertalk really isn't going to care as it is much more oriented towards frequent fliers on airlines with loyalty programs. As you found airliners.net would be the place to go to read discussion about the merger, and quite frankly I didn't find it that informative. A lot of baseless speculation about what it means for MSP, etc.

Yeah, that was a long read. I wonder if we could catch an international option with the merged Allegiant and our new international abilities in a few years. Like you said, it just depends on what they want out of the deal.

It will be interesting to see what they do. It wouldn't be entirely out of their current strategy to say fly from somewhere like OMA to PVR or Jamaica if they do chose to go international i.e. a smaller city point to point to a leisure destination. I think the focus on that A.net thread on CUN is a bit misguided in that regard as pretty much everyone, especially in the Midwest, that has a FIS for customs and immigration has CUN flights already.

PVR has quite a few mostly discount Canadian airline flights each day from Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg, plus Toronto and Montreal. Those airlines cater to the leisure market of snowbirds. So an airline like Allegiant might jump in to offer a few flights from Omaha. Heck, even Rockford, Illinois was getting nonstop flights to/from PVR in the recent past. PVR is set to open a huge new international terminal in about a year, which will increase their capacity by quite a bit.

Who knows? It isn't Breeze... the numbers are in line with December. The fact the ULCCs are up points to potentially broader economic issues. As always I can go back and look at loads/flights cancelled or whatever in 4 months and maybe find out more? (that probably won't happen).

I would sure hope so :;):

Speaking of schedule, Grow Omaha posted that construction has now hit the halfway point. Some other interesting things mentioned:
  • The number of elevators will be quadrupled.
  • The number of escalators will be tripled.
  • On top of the new third skywalk, the existing skywalks will also be totally renovated with new glass and design elements to match the upgraded terminal.
Jeff also hinted that the airport would change the Eppley Airfield name.
