Simmonds Restaurant Management Inc. is selling 72 franchised Burger King locations in Nebraska and Iowa to the company.

So I wonder if it was that pending 2% restaurant tax that caused them to exit this segment...

Or was it Cutchall that was raising heck about that?

Simmond's has been selling, yet still operating, some of it's stores to a company called GE Capital Franchise.

As many BKs as Simmonds lists on its webpage, http://www.bkmidwest.com
they do not have many listings on the Assessors page when searching for Simmonds.

It seems like in most cases, Simmonds is the operator of the store, and someone else (even BK Corp) is the owner of the building/land.

I noticed that they have completely gutted 2 Burger Kings here in Omaha. First changes of the new ownership?

-On 114th and Dodge they have completely ripped off the roof and the front of the building. The drive through is closed however lobby is still open.

-On 90th and Maple they have also ripped off the front and roof, however this one the lobby is closed and only the drive through is open.

When Bob Edwards sold back his McDonald's franchise in 2002 back to the corporatiion the renovaions of many of the stores began. Some were even closed right away -- 63rd & Center and South 24th Street.

How far from the direct Omaha metro do you have to go to get 51 BK stores? I know it seems like they are everwhere but 51 seems higher than I would have guessed for the Om CB metro.

Omaha and Lincoln pretty much covers it (although I don't know if that's necessarily these 51 stores).

I didn't even read the link so I was just going off the headline stating Omaha CB. If you throw in Lincoln the 51 gets more believable.

Although customers shouldn't expect to see any changes right away, the terms of the acquisition include exterior and interior remodeling projects. Those projects will happen sometime in the next four years, Ondrula said.

That will be nice. Some of the current stores are looking dated and gross.

Coming home this evening I drove by BK on 178th & Center and there were a couple of trucks there taking down all of the signage. The drive thru lanes had yellow tape across them like a crime scene.

I can speak from personal experience it’s never been busy when I’ve been driving by. I’ve grabbed a few breakfast sandwiches from there, that’s about it.

I’m assuming they’re shutting down. Can anyone confirm this?

Their store locator is showing everyday other than Monday as closed for the dine in and drive thru hours.

If that's the case, that really hits home for me. I worked at this location throughout high school and it was my first job. Got the job around the time I turned 16 and was there until after I turned 18. It's kind of sad to see.

I used to close and when I first started, it would be pretty slow later in the evening to where I was the only one working the drive-thru and front counter, while also cleaning the kids room, dinning room, and drive-thru area, and stocking up front. The whole south side of Center was undeveloped when I first started and I watched as they graded and started building everything that is there now. It was also empty lots to the east too and 177th didn't extend beyond the drive thru exit. I went on the roof once later in the evening (there's a ladder and hatch in the very back by the soda syrups) and looked around the whole area and barely saw any traffic around.

I got into a lot of mischief during my time there, which I won't go into nor admit lol. What I will say is that my brother worked there with me for a short time and ran into one of the managers years later and asked if he remembered him and they said no, they don't remember most of the kids they worked with over the years. But when he mentioned my name, they were like oh wow, yeah...

By the end, it got a lot busier to where I just focused on the drive-thru and someone else dealt with all the dining room stuff. It was a pretty busy location at that time, so it's weird to me that that's no longer the case. I guess the only constant in life is change.

Coming into work this morning I drove by and I honestly cannot tell what's going on with that location. The closest drive thru lane to the building still had the yellow tape strung across it. However, the outside drive thru lane "might" have been open? Their drive thru menus were definitely lit up as they have the newer digital screens. But most, if not all, of their external lighting was off. It looked like they may have had some some lights on in the kitchen, but I couldn't tell if they were actually selling food.

I'd say perhaps it's simply going through a remodel, but why tear down all of your outdoor signage at 5pm on a weeknight (yesterday), during what should usually be a fairly busy time for business?

And like you mentioned above, I also noticed the location shows closed all week (except for Monday).

Apparently, I answered my own question... I was snooping around LoopNet and noticed this lot on Center and the BK lot on 138th & Maple are showing available for lease. Says it will be available April 2026.

How does BK stay in business at all? It’s one of those restaurants that wafts a great charred burger aroma outdoors into the air, catching unsuspecting hungry people who happen to be traveling in the vicinity, but absolutely ALWAYS if you fall for that aroma and take a chance with ordering their food you end up sadly disappointed, and swearing you will never make that mistake again. You might as well flush your $10-15 down the toilet.

I couldn't disagree more. I can always tell I'm downwind from a BK specifically because it smells like old oil from a car whose head gasket is leaking and burning said oil. Not just a particular BK, but every single one.

It just smells like a propane grilled burger to me. I love that smell when they're cranking them out. You can kind of smell the gas whether grilling at home or when you get a waft of BK. So in a way, they are burgers cooked with an oil lamp. Still smells good.

My preference is charcoal though. I always likened grilling directly with fuel oil of any kind as cooking with paint thinner. It just doesn’t go over well in my mind.

Burger King has been a Sh!t Show for years now..

I can’t remember the last time I ate any BK..Might be 10 years now..It is a shame though, Burger King, like McDonald’s, was actually pretty decent when I was a kid growing up in the 1970’s and 80’s…

I frequently drive by the BK in the Lake Manawa area of CB. No matter what time of day, I hardly see any cars there. Actually, most of the time, it's literally ZERO cars there. Been like that for quite awhile. I am surprised it's still open. Not to change the topic, but the TA truck stop just west of that BK always seems dead as well.

Surprised they are still around. Haven’t really been a force in fast food for decades, probably since the 90’s. Dying a slow death like Wendy’s . At one time it was a good option to McDonald’s back when those two were the main fast food players.
