People of a different color and gender fluidity would say the same about Pillen. That's my problem with both candidates, and politics in general. It's not new, but tribalism is a turn off for me and it's only getting worse. Two party system stinks when the perception and/or reality is each excludes and/or ignores the rest of the population that's not a part of their party. I don't vote on party lines anymore. Takes some more work, but I feel better about it. Sorry for bringing politics up, but its disheartening when we can't have reasonableness in a highly effectual part of our society. I will vote though, and encourage everyone too do the same, whoever you end up voting for.

Of all the completely wrong things you’ve said, and this is one of many, this has to be one of the more egregious ones. Carol Blood is quite moderate, and has made a big part of her campaign about helping Mead clean up from their extensive issues with the AltEn plant cleanup. Unless Mead is suddenly a center of trans people and people of color, I don’t think anything you just said is remotely correct. She’s also campaigned on lower property taxes in the state. Pillen refuses to debate her, which I feel like your “no debate” rule would take into account, so he can more easily cast her as some wild leftist when she just plain isn’t. It is so much easier to fall into those patterns without looking at any of the issues or policy stances because all you see is a D or R next to a name.

I concur.

Bigred, If you've been made to think Blood is leftiest, I have some oceanfront property in Arizona to sell you..

Let's see. Channel 7, not exactly the most right wing media source has her photographed wearing a "The Future Is Female" shirt at a speech/press conference.

Being not female, why would I not think that she would look at a female with a 4/10 problem as more important than me with a 7/10 problem? Sorry, but adhominem insults at me are not welcome and are getting threadbare. Facts are facts. She has chosen to present herself in Identitarian clothing and I don't find it unreasonable to conclude that she is at least sympathetic to that point of view. As someone who has no interest in living with a governor who determines my need's importance based on some group identity that I have no control over, I will be voting for her opponent.

News outlets did report that the Nebraska's first lady is endorsing Blood over Pillen, but that might be more representative of her views on politics versus Blood's position on issues.

What on earth is a “4/10” problem and a “7/10” problem? Some sort of computer code?
And my view of a “The Future is Female” shirt being worn by a girl or woman is one of empowerment, and hardly a threat to my identity as a male.

I was curious about that too. Also, I am old and the word - Identitarian - was new to me. Doing brief research on Identitarian, I find little that links it to the ‘Left’ and more links to the ‘far right’.

Slama and Herbster have settled their differences, according to a crawl across my TV screen this morning. Like I suspected, the only winners were the lawyers.

Report shows per student funding in Nebraska could reduce student aid, raise property taxes
School funding debates are a constant in Nebraska politics and this year's gubernatorial race is no exception.

"Every Nebraskan, no matter their circumstances should have a shot. But our schools are not set up that way. Some districts receive additional funding but others are left to fend for themselves," said Pillen in one of his television ads.

That additional funding he mentions is equalization aid, which is determined by the TEEOSA formula.

Of the $1.7 billion in school funding allocated every year around $880 million is for equalization aid.

That only goes to 86 out of 244 school districts that are serving around 78% of Nebraska students.

OMAHA, Neb (KMTV) — School funding debates are a constant in Nebraska politics and this year's gubernatorial race is no exception.

Pillen wants to see that change and spread IT equally on a per-student basis but a new report shows that idea might lead to a reduction in funding for most of Nebraska's students.

"When we look at the implications of that what we see is that for the school districts that educate around 78% of students in this state, potentially they would have a funding loss of around 270 million dollars," said Rebecca Firestone with OpenSky Policy Institute.

OpenSky Policy institute is the think tank that authored the report.

The consequences of per-student funding wouldn't just be felt by students but likely property owners as well.

OpenSky's analysis found that the average property tax levy would have to increase by 41 cents to cover the difference in lost funding.

Pillen and his campaign though aren't convinced by the report and in a statement to 3 News now said in part:

"When you make as many assumptions as this back-of-the-napkin 'analysis' does, you can arrive at whatever conclusion you want. Entrenched interests want to protect the TEEOSA status quo, but the status quo isn't working, it isn't fair, and it contributes to higher property taxes..."
Here is another example where I am not convinced Pillen has any actual plan other then sticking to political rhetoric. Additionally, based on some stuff I have read, he is pitting rural and urban Nebraska against each other. In this article, the schools fending for themselves are rural schools. They fend for themselves because a lot of property owners in their districts pay 50% of what urban district property owners pay. This is not per student versus per district funding issue and when presented with data, he just waves it away.

I've worked in almost every computer field, and write code... Not a computer code of any sort I've ever seen.

Jim Pillen’s interview with the World Herald has to be one of the most mind numbingly stupid things I’ve ever read. No wonder he refused to debate.

Hope he has a plan to "inspire" state workers to work harder for less money. That always works out well..

All this talk of cutting spending to cut taxes, except when it comes to widening US-81, among others, for the very compelling reason that it, you know, should just be that way. Also we are not the only state with two-lane sections of this highway, as he stated. In fact every state this highway touches has two-lane sections. I went on StreetView and picked out random spots along US-81 in each state north to south and none were four-lanes.

Gee whiz, can’t believe you took a few minutes to check an easily disproven statement that was basically his only policy in the entire interview

All I want is 81 to be Interstate-quality down to I-70/I-135. (Kansas needs to step up in this regard as well--that stretch around Concordia is shameful.) I think anything north of York is a bridge too far, so to speak.

Q&A with Gov.-elect Jim Pillen: Taxes, school finance top legislative priority list
Nebraska Gov.-elect Jim Pillen says he wants to work with the Legislature to knock some sense into the state’s property taxes, income taxes and school finance.

Pillen, who takes office Jan. 5, detailed the top priorities for his first legislative session during a Dec. 21 interview with the Nebraska Examiner in his transition office at the Capitol.

The University of Nebraska regent and Columbus-area hog operator said he has been preparing his first budget proposal since defeating Democrat Carol Blood in November.

The Examiner asked him about how he plans to approach a number of issues he campaigned on. His responses were edited for brevity and clarity.
Another interview with the new governor. I will try to keep an open mind with some of his policy stances, but apparently he doesn't like studies that contradict what he believes in, like state equalization per student and nitrate levels in rural water supplies.

I think Pillen’s problem is he doesn’t know what he doesn’t know. And he thinks “we” is all Nebraskans.
He said "They are some big, ugly red brick buildings"
...and then they were gone.

After reading his release, I have to wonder whether he will enter the governor's race again.
