I hate that view TBH. Nobody would say that Munich doesn't look like a real city even though it doesn't have any skyscrapers near its city center.

No, but don’t you get that in order to prove we are a real city and not just some small ag town we have to build a giant ugly building overshadowing our city’s central park that would look right at home on one of those old Big Johnson t-shirts. Did I mention that we’re gonna demolish the central library to build it? Oh, also, the first fourteen stories will be parking. Don’t worry though, we’re promoting multimodal transit with our mixed-traffic streetcar and watered-down BRT as well as our bike lanes we don’t plan to start building until 2030.

It looks like if you asked a kindergartener to draw a skyscraper.

So a new mass transit option=bad; new employer presence in the CBD=bad; conversion of several existing buildings to residential due in part to that new employer presence=bad; new downtown library branch built downtown with a new central library at a new location=bad; a new glass tower=bad; delayed start to bike lanes=bad.

I don’t know man this all sounds good for the urban core in Omaha. The pessimism for new and good development in Omaha is astounding, it’s like you people want to be miserable.

Kinda what I was thinking.

To address the 'looking like a real city' thing. I was being a little tongue-in-cheek, but truthfully, that big, ugly building that a kindergartner drew helps to alter the perception of us living amongst cattle in the middle of a cornfield. Maybe it's a 'little guy complex' many folks have around here, maybe it's not, but I think skylines are pretty cool. Yes, Europe and other foreign countries have dense, vibrant cities without skylines, but I think ours looks pretty decent for a city our size.

I mean, yeah, I do think a lot of people in this community have "little brother" syndrome and think some skyscrapers will help. Spending a bit of time in a delightful smaller city in Europe is the cure for this. Go to smaller towns like Lugano or Begur or even more "Omaha-sized" cities like Turin, and they're delightful and doing their own thing unapologetically.

Again, I'll reiterate, if we had simply filled in most of these central business district lots with 6-story superblocks Barcelona-style it would have created a more lively atmosphere, especially after 5pm. And in a world where office work is dead dead deader than dead these office spaces are going to be more of a hinderance than an asset longterm.

Tower looks kinda cool so long as you're not looking at it's, um, undercarriage, but it doesn't really move the needle much for us a city.

I am sorry but I just couldn't disagree more here.

There are CBDs all over the country with big problems. Cratering urban office markets with jobs leaving the core and property values plummeting. It may not seem like a big deal to have empty office buildings to people without an investment in them but wait until these office building values get reset in some case hundreds of millions less than they were 5 years ago and see what it does to the city tax collections.

Dallas has 3 million SF of space being vacated in the next few years thanks to AT&T and Comerica moving to the burbs not to mention both their basketball and hockey teams leaving the city. Denver has CBD offices selling for pennies on the dollar. STL has a big DT hill to climb.

Omaha has a Fortune 500 company spending more than half a billion smack dab in the middle of downtown bringing high paying jobs to the core in an era where so many cities are seeing the opposite. This is so big for the city beyond what it looks like from the sky.

I’ve been all over Europe, and I agree with iamjacobm.

It’s a marketing thing.

Let’s be real - we have a reputation as a little cow town. This is evidenced by interviews with people going to the CWS and being asked what Omaha’s population is, and receiving answers like “20,000”.

Trying to get more large conventions here? Having a large skyline giving the sense of us being a large city helps.

Want to impress executives into moving their companies here? Having a large skyline giving the sense of us being a large city helps.

Want to persuade tourists to give Omaha a try? Having a large skyline giving the sense of us being a large city helps.

Got an out-of-towner job applicant or college applicant considering Omaha? Having a large skyline giving the sense of us being a large city helps.

Omaha, especially its downtown all the way to the Med center is on a roll. I heard the Mutual tower is the tallest office building being built in the United States right now, some other buildings under construction are taller but they are residential or mixed use buildings. We are lucky to have companies like FNBO and Mutual of Omaha willing to invest in the downtown core. Omaha’s downtown looks way better than it did 30 years ago. We still need to add more infill with some midrise height in the 200-300 foot range.

Totally agree. A new 677ft Skyscraperer, adding to the density, height and perception of Omaha’s downtown core is big..

Even bigger, is one of our F500 companies investing $800 million in our downtown core speaks volumes..this will have that effect as iamjacobm has indicated..in terms of vibrancy, livability, street level activity and future developments in our downtown core area..

Grocery store downtown- I’m looking at you next…

Whatever the purpose, it seems consistent with the renderings.

I think both short, 6-7 story buildings that provide density and street life as well as a CBD with towering skyscrapers together help create a vibe and an aesthetic that help shape a positive opinion around the city.

I noted it to be fairly prominent even from 90th. I imagine its near blinding cresting the hill near 26th.

Which is more ironic...that this typographical malapropism was posted on the eve of America's 250th birthday, or that Ol' Hawkeye read it the day after celebrating America's 250th birthday, during his morning constitutional? 8) :D

Is it safety railing though? I am pretty sure the glass goes up above the walkable floor already by a good ways. Brad posted a pic a while back from above that showed a recess around where the elevator core would be. Unless that had a floor installed around it at the top...

At this point I think it's pretty obviously not a safety rail. It now surrounds three sides of the perimeter and looks like a tiara. All but the East front and corner pieces remain to be installed. The lines and spacing match the same lines on the curtain walls. The primary purpose must be aesthetic and it's a much more eye pleasing addition. Even if the scale looks wrong for safety railing.

Yes..

It is related…

I was told this morning that JE Dunn is pursuing a high rise project downtown AND is still pursuing the Lanoha project on the old UP site. Sounds like the high rise project is this one on the library site.
I can confirm that additional rumor. There is something BIG brewing at the Lanoha/UP site and it’s not the proposal from February/2019…

I wanted to go back and see when the original story broke, and as I scrolled through, it made me think of this. Since it's been several years and nothing has come to fruition, I can only assume this fell through. Any way to tell us what it *was* supposed to be?

At the time of those comments, the Lanoha/UP site project mentioned was going to be the Mutual Tower site while the old library site (the eventual spot for the Mutual Tower) was going to be a high rise anchored by Fiserv.

What has happened to all the interest in the tower? Thanks for Brad's pics. I just loved his high views over the '480 corridor' as he looked over the skyline towards the east. I'm handicapped or believe me I'd be all over this monolith like flies on |expletive|. What has happened to all the interest. Oh well it's finished "let's move on" attitude it seems like somehow. There are so many angles yet to be explored here. "5 days....... really?? Mike

Here's a shot I could only take in June (that is, if I want the sun behind me), when the evening sun is in the northern half of the horizon.
You can take the shot May thru August. The sun is still setting way far North.

"5 days....... really?? Mike
I still try to shoot photos of it about once a week. I'm not sure about everyone else, but summer is just a busy time and its harder to get down there all the time. I shot it from every single angle, from the riverfront out to the children's museum back in May. Those photos are on page 122. I plan on doing that again, but probably not until the crane comes down.

Summer is busy for a lot of people. Also, I think there was more excitement with each floor or glass added but now that it’s topped out it’s a little different.

One thing you could check visual progress on is the front entrance at ground level. I think they're working on that now.

Looks like they are up to 16 now on the glass where the elevator shaft was.
