Just got back from 9 days in Washington DC and Ocean City MD. It was a family vacation so I barely picked up the camera.

We are considering going to DC next year- we know there's tons there, just aren't sure if it'd be appealing enough for 1-2 of our kids (they are still on the younger side). I've always wanted to go, but it isn't necessarily a bucket list type place like NYC or Hawaii or something. Would you go back again?

How old are the kids? I think they need to be in their teen years to appreciate what you can see there. We have gone a few times, and both daughters were in their early teens the first time. There are things for younger kids to see and do, but to me, you will miss the reasons you go to DC. Go; it is very worth it. And my age target is just my opinion based on experience

17/14/9. The 9 year old may enjoy the Smithsonian, my middle is a freshman this year and my oldest is a senior. I think those two would appreciate it (plus I could really get down on some Maryland crab), but we were also going to go to Delaware/Virginia since they are right there and do a beach day, too. But Brad's pics really did give me the itch to go

With that mix, I say GO.

My first and last stop almost every time I go is Arlington National Cemetery and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Watching the guards and the guard change is powerful and will never get old for me.

Spend the $$ to go to the Holocaust Museum

See the monuments at night, and there is a tour that takes you from one to another that is worth the cost.

Smithsonian is a must, and you can spend a lot of time there. Prioritize the ones you want to see. Because you will not see them all


Ford Theaters is a good thing

The list is endless, and many places, like the Smithsonian, are tax-funded, so there is no admission fee. There are some good things to see that have a $$ though


The one thing I really miss that was a private museum with a cost is the Newseum. I spent a lot of time there. It was right on Pennsylvania Ave. They close d a few years ago.

My kids are 6 and 9 and we were staying at their cousin's house, who are also 6 and 9. While we did do fun things like watch a Nationals BB game, see money being printed at the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, and visit the Smithsonian Air and Space museum, we were never out playing "Tourist" for long hours at a time and we did lots of local stuff the cousins would normally do anyway, like go to the neighborhood pool or neighborhood park. My son went to baseball practice with his cousin, things like that. We actually did a "Sunset Golf Cart Tour" of the Mall. The National Mall is like the Las Vegas strip where you can see a building and you think "Its just over there" but a half mile later you still have a ways to walk. The National Mall is over 2 miles end to end and the White House is over 1/2 mile north of the mall, and the Jefferson is about 1/2 mile south of the mall. It would be a lot for younger kids to walk.

I live in the DMV, just across the Potomac in Arlington close enough to walk into DC. I can suggest some places to visit or things to see, tourist or local oriented. Also, places to eat and how to get around.

Nice photos! The Whitehouse now has a ridiculous huge fence around it and general public is kept so much further away than any if my previous visits.
