I had forgot about Rockharbor and Critic until looking back yesterday. Also forgot about Streets.

Smucker is one I didn't forget though. I feel like he got a little less crazy before he disappeared though.

That last log-in in 2024 was actually because I got a private message notification from Coyote through the forum wondering if I was still around. I logged in to respond.

I actually never stopped checking the forums for development updates and photos, but I gave up participating. It seems most forumers found my "pedantic-and-didactic-20-something-graduate-planning-school-self" from 15 years ago to be kind of a pest. I also stopped having the energy for wading through so much vacant and idle wishful thinking ("I think Omaha should have this, or that, or it would be nice if some developer did this hypothetically awesome thing..."), so I'm very content to simply watch for the photo updates and substantive inside information that occasionally appears.

So while I'm here, thanks to all of you contributors for your development update photos. It's definitely appreciated by this taciturn former forumer!

Omaha Chef- one of our earliest forum meet ups, back in 2004 (might have been 2005)was at the early stages of North Downtown development and Omaha Chef hosted us for a tour and meal at InPlay.. Sadly, my understanding is he passed away several years ago..RIP Chef and InPlay..

Rockharbor was banned from the forum in 2019 for frankly, just being over the top and unhinged with his postings. In the end, I believe he got into so many disagreements with other members, he became always defensive and seemed to counter-attack with most every poster who disagreed with him…

Have you considered sending out an email to inactive members to ask them to log in. The timeline is whatever you decide.
For example...3 years without logging in and the "Are you still there?" email gets sent.

No, it really doesn't matter if they are active or not. We are not going not going to delete anyone. People come and go and sometimes come back again, even a decade or more later. The is more of a curiosity thing than anything. We do everything we can to keep the forum as organized as possible, as it is a great 22+ year database of Omaha history.

Of the 2000 members, I have verified nearly every single one of them over they years. There are a few new members that are spammers and we have deactivated their accounts, but we don't always delete the spammer for about 30 days just to keep an eye on any trends that may be happen with them. I also delete people that register and never log in again after the day they registered. I usually give those people about a month too.

Yeah, he disappeared for quite a while and when he came back he mentioned he had a stroke. His post were never very coherent after his return so that made sense. Then one day he just disappeared again. He lost his phone and email during his first illness break and never got a new number than any of use know of. He has a brother and sister in town but no significant other or kids. We never saw an obituary.

you know, it's funny: I joined the forum just about 19 years ago after lurking around a while. It makes me sad to see people pass (that I've never met) because it feels like I knew them...sort of.

We've hoped to see Coyote pop back in again, but its been a while. I'll sometimes look to see if the last active date suddenly changed.

One thing that most people on here don't realize is there was a major concern about losing the forum when he disappeared the first time. This was before I joined the team and he was the one that ran the hosting. Luckily I had helped him recover the site from a bad hack a couple years prior so I had the host info and credentials. But it still took some effort to get the contact info changed.

In Loving Memory of Grandpa Smucker

Grandpa Smucker, a beloved cranky old man, passed away peacefully after a long and distinguished career of complaining about everything, eating fast food, and monitoring construction projects that absolutely did not need his supervision.

He was a man of simple pleasures: a greasy bag of fast food, a comfortable chair, and a freshly excavated patch of dirt where he could stand with his arms crossed and mutter, “They’re doing it wrong.”

Grandpa Smucker possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of every road project, building development, traffic pattern, and questionable zoning decision within a 50-mile radius. If a new building went up, he knew about it. If a road was widened, he had an opinion. If a traffic light was installed, he personally considered it a government conspiracy against left turns.

He especially enjoyed watching construction workers do their jobs. Whether they were pouring concrete, moving dirt, or simply standing around for five minutes, Grandpa was there—observing closely and providing the kind of unsolicited project management that nobody had requested.

His passion for city development was matched only by his passion for fast food. He believed every major infrastructure project should include a drive-thru, preferably one with a two-for-one deal. His final words may or may not have been, “Where’s the nearest Popeye’s?”

Grandpa Smucker will be remembered for his grumpy disposition, his sharp wit, his unwavering dedication to complaining about modern society, and his remarkable ability to turn a casual drive around town into a three-hour tour of construction sites.

He leaves behind family, friends, and several unfinished arguments about whether the new roundabout was actually necessary.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no elaborate funeral procession. He insisted it would “just cause traffic.”

Instead, family and friends are invited to remember him by grabbing some Popeye’s, finding a good vantage point overlooking a construction site, and loudly declaring:

“They should've built it differently.”

Rest in peace, Grandpa Smucker.

The construction will continue without you.

Unfortunately, so will the complaining.
