Re: Family Fare Business News
Sad to see it close. It was in bad shape and the interior smelled as well. The peeps in that area either go to Walmart on 132nd and L or HyVee on 96th and Q. When that store was built neither the Walmart or HyVee existed.

Re: Family Fare (108th and Q St)
The older part of Millard has a rapidly increasing Latino population. Just look at the number of authentic Mexican and Central American restaurants that have popped up around there. This would probably make a good location for another Supermercado Nuestra Familia.
There's also the Walmart Neighborhood Market at 96th & Giles.BD PC Omaha wrote: Tue Feb 17, 2026 5:02 pm The peeps in that area either go to Walmart on 132nd and L or HyVee on 96th and Q.

These Family Fare’s seem to be slowly closing up shop across Omaha.

I'm shocked they've lasted as long as they have, TBH. They remind me of a Hinky Dinky... if they were still open and had never made any cosmetic changes from the early 80s. LOLCermak wrote: Tue Feb 17, 2026 9:40 pm These Family Fare’s seem to be slowly closing up shop across Omaha.

Re: Family Fare (108th and Q St)
The holding company that operates Piggly Wiggly bought SpartanNash last year. While insomniac doomscrolling the Nextdoor cesspool hoping to see someone complaining about dumpsters being emptied overnight, I saw an unfounded rumor that Omaha stores will be converted to them.

Yes this is spot on. Dillon's (Kroger) is re-entering the KC market and their new store will be 100,000 SF. They also opened a new store in Lawrence KS (and closed one nearby that it replace). Went from 60,000 SF to 90,000. They definitely seem to be moving to larger stores going forward.Brad wrote: Tue Feb 17, 2026 4:47 pmDoubt it. This old FF is only 65,000 SF.djc311 wrote: Tue Feb 17, 2026 4:41 pm If Bakers is serious about business in Omaha considering they’re building the two new locations, perhaps they should take it over.

I feel like if they wanted to, they could get pretty close to that 100k Sq/Ft mark by expanding the store to the attached strip mall to the north and south.Greg S wrote: Wed Feb 18, 2026 4:55 pmYes this is spot on. They would need to rip the entire front off that old store. How about the No Frills in Fremont that converted to a Bakers? It was awhile ago, but there's always people at the Bakers in Fremont.

Re: Family Fare (108th and Q St)
Was it a No Frills? I thought it had been a Rainbow Foods store, like the Baker's on Saddlecreek, Galvin Road in Bellevue, and the now Nebraska Humane Society building. There was also a location next to Walmart when it was on South 84th Street in Papillion. That one became a Hobby Lobby, as did the one in Millard. Baker's parent company at the time, Fleming bought out Rainbow foods in the mid-90s and either converted the stores to Baker's or sold them off. The store in Fremont was acquired at the same time.BuildTaller wrote: Thu Feb 19, 2026 4:38 pmAfter they put in the gates by the doors, I never went back. Re: Family Fare (108th and Q St)
As memory serves, in Bellevue I believe it went:
Food 4 Less became a Festival Foods which became a Baker's.
Though, all three brands still seem to be around in some capacity. So, perhaps one chain didn't buy out the other chains, but simply took over the space they vacated.
When Albertson's sold off their area locations I seem to remember they got divided up and some became Baker's and some became No Frills. As we know, No Frills became Family Fare or Supermercado Nuestra Familia.
I hope I am remembering all that correctly.

You're correct. My Baker's history memory failed me. But Fleming did buy both Festival and Rainbow, right around the same time.

My Fleming Foods history is fuzzy, but that sounds about right in terms of how stores they owned in the area progressed name wise. I remember Festival Foods having obnoxious radio ads back in the 90's.ChadJK wrote: Fri Feb 20, 2026 3:43 pm As memory serves, in Bellevue I believe it went:

Bag'n Save/No Frills bought all the former Albertson's because Albertson's refused to sell any to Kroger. Kroger in turn bought 120th & W Center, 72nd & Ames and Twin Creek from Bag'n Save/No Frills. All of them pretty new buildings. Oddly enough, the people who were running B&S/NF at the time were all former Baker's guys -- Lonnie Eggers, Bill Brewer, Bob Trant & Donnie Wilde. And all four of them were my store managers at Baker's Spring Valley at one point, in that order.Brad wrote: Tue Feb 24, 2026 1:00 amI thought one of the companies Bakers or No Frills purchased all of them and then immediately sold some stores to the other.ChadJK wrote: Fri Feb 20, 2026 3:43 pm When Albertson's sold off their area locations I seem to remember they got divided up and some became Baker's and some became No Frills. Given the condition of many of the surrounding buildings and businesses, I don't have high hopes for this turning into something amazing.
It's really unfortunate, too, because this area should not be considered blighted or significantly run down. I don't know why this ever started its decline, TBH. But I could list probably 10 businesses in the immediate vicinity that have let themselves go over the past 10-20 years.

Q to L had, (to my memory) which are now gone, Hardees, Wendy's, and Winchells. I'm not sure on the timing of which was first. The Hardees was taken for the new/larger Bucky's. Wendy's was about where Jimmy's Egg is. Both went to L Street Marketplace. A short lived Sonic. Godfathers is now Cane's. That |expletive|-hole hotel should have been dozed 10 years ago. The Alberson's was nice. I don't think any upgrades were done to the store once Bag 'n Save took it over. Same ceiling and floor tiles.
The area as a whole has been in slow decline for years.

I am shocked the one in CB on Vallet View Drive is still open. They remodeled it when they took it over and it is very nice, however there are never more than a dozen or two cars in the lot.

The Family Fare in CB is currently for sale/lease so it will close whenever they find a new tenant or the building sells.

Re: Family Fare closing 2 stores
My goodness. There won't be hardly anything left of the Albertsons/Bag N Save/No-Frills/Family Fare saga, dating back to 19??. Think about how many stores there used to be. Now its almost 100% you have to drive to a grocery store, unless youre lucky to live near one. North 108th and whenever Saddle Creek decides to leave, I think that accounts for all the bigger stores. What the heck happened? Were we never cut out to have that many for that long? Did Walmart kill them when they came to town with the Neighborhood Market in 2014? Or when Walmart Supercenters all came to town, not as long ago as you'd think. Before the early 2000's the only Walmart I remember at all was at 680 & Fort. Kinda missing those Pre-Walmart days. (Cry laughing) now we all buy the same stuff at the same place.

Re: Family Fare closing 2 stores
that sucks, they have amazing chicken. Unfortunately, it's not in a great spot and you have to drive past hy-vee or super-saver to get to it and a lot of people just don't do it. And the people that live in the area would rather drive past *it* to get to hy-vee, which is (admittedly) a much nicer storeBIGO88 wrote: Sun Oct 11, 2026 7:33 pm The Family Fare in CB is currently for sale/lease so it will close whenever they find a new tenant or the building sells.

The biggest reason I don't go there is their prices. Even higher than HyVee. I only go to HyVee for my prescriptions. My shopping is done at Supersaver and Fareway. With trips to Aldi in between,

Thats practically their reason for existing. The chicken is FIRE. It has been since it was made at No-Frills. I wonder who came up with it... In any case, Omaha won't be the same without it. We can't lose the recipe!

It is! And since you pointed it out, that appears to be the last former Albertsons to stand as a Family Fare once 108th, and Saddle Creek close.ita wrote: Mon Oct 12, 2026 9:12 pmI would be absolutely bummed if they close the one by my house at 144th and Center. The way they're going, I may just recommend we eat as much as we can while we can lol. I mentioned in a past post, I think eventually only the Nuestra Familia(s) and the Family Fare on Grover will remain. Maybe the ones in Bellevue and Papillion in the immediate metro area.
