Charming Plattsmouth

A week ago, I took a spontaneous trip to Plattsmouth and was TOTALLY surprised. What a great, little, charming town in the country! And it's only about 25 minutes south of Omaha. I walked around Main Street, which has TONS of lively shops (partially fostered by Plattsmouth's successful Mainstreets Program). I went into a bookstore, where I was offered FREE COFFEE and talked to the owner for quite a while. Then I went and had lunch at a great little restaurant called The Chocolate Moose Cafe. After that I got into my car and explored the area around Plattsmouth, which is a beautiful wooded area nestled in the bluffs along the Missouri River. I totally recommend it as a nice country getaway for other urbanites like myself .

Three bridges right in a row. The suspension bridge actually carries a large pipeline. And then right next to it is a railroad bridge, and next to that (and not very visible in this photo) is a vehicle bridge.


















There were lots of big "log cabins" like this nestled in the woods; People with money who commute to Omaha.

Very good photos, Aaron, thanks for posting them! My favorite building there is the County Courthouse - you captured it quite nicely! I really like going through Plattsmouth on the train, especially crossing the Missouri River on that old bridge.

Nice photos Aaron. Plattsmouth is Omaha's most scenic suburbs. Some of the homes are like doll houses. Very nice.

I really like the country scenes, particularly the limestone edging out of the ground near the road.

A gang of wild turkeys in the city too, that's crazy.

How big is Plattsmouth and does it still have a good employment base or is it more of commuter exurb to Omaha now?

I believe Plattsmouth has about 7,000 people.

The turkeys actually weren't in the town itself, but not too far away, that's for sure.

I was just really impressed with Plattsmouth and it's surroundings. I plan on going back often.

I don't know much about Plattsmouth's job market, but I would think that it can't really support all its citizens. I would assume a majority of Plattsmouthers commute up to the city. heck, downtown Omaha is only about 25 to 30 minutes away.

The commuting patterns are such that Cass County was added to the metropolitan area about 10 years ago. Plattsmouth is only about 20 miles south of DT Omaha and the Kennedy Freeway goes right to the front door.

I haven't been there for a while. Is there much new residential development going on down there?
