Northern Lights

I took these pictures of the northern lights from my backyard last night. I live in the Chalco Lake area. If you didn't know, yesterday morning there was a huge solar flare and the Aurora Borealis could be seen as far south as Utah. The last time this was visible in our neck of the woods was 4 years ago.

Those are great. I heard about them on the news last night but I live to far in the city to see them.

Those are some phenomenal pictures. Even more impressive were your supercell pics.. partly because I'm a severe weather fanatic myself. I always thought about becoming a storm expert but my university never offered it. I wanna have one of those high tech computers like you saw in Twister where you can sort of get into the internal dynamics of a storm and measure wind velocity and actually see the velocity radar where the winds are moving to and from the radar tower.. pretty amazing stuff.

I've chased tornadoes but haven't had the fortunes you've had. In fact.. the opposite has occured. When I lived in Houston, a tornado spun up our block and managed to rip off a portion of our house.. we were pretty lucky considering we didn't have basements down South.. at least not then. Anyways, I was too young to remember it all.. for some reason I still think I saw the whole thing from my bedroom window but really my parents were covering me in the bathtub while the whole house shook.

Hopefully 2005 will be active...(without all the damage, of course

)

I wish I was able to find a spot that was much more clear. I live south of the city and had tons of light pollution. Your pics are great!

Sorry....didn't mean to give the impression that they were my photos. I could never get that close to a tornado without bringing a clean pair of shorts to change into. It's just an interesting site I thought I'd share because the pictures are so great. I've got my own pics, but not of the same quality as the ones from that site.

JHuston,
MY father and I once belonged to the Omaha Astronomical Society many, many years ago... We even owned one of the pads at your Weeping Water site too. Judging by the digital noise and size of your friends pics, was he using one of those air cooled CCD cameras designed for telescopes? I would suggest that he run the pictures through Neat Image or Noiseware. They should clean up pretty well.

I live over here on Chalco Pointe Drive. My house backs up to the creek, so that might be possible.
