Comstock Rock

Comstock Rock was HOT in so many ways! We went up on Sunday only, this year. Way too hot and the band selection wasn't our cup of tea on Friday and Saturday. Sundays high temperature was a cozy 104.

Spent lunchtime in the city park in Burwell (where we had a motel room). Here's the old broken bridge across the North Loup River. It's the old Highway 11 bridge that was washed out in a flood in 1939.

The Greg Rollie Band. Rollie was the original lead singer and keyboardist with Santana, and with the original percussionist, they play most of an hour of Santana hits. Probably the surprise of the day, they were excellent!

One of the beer tents. Live bands in each tent in between main stage shows.

With the setting sun, the temps went down and the evening turned gorgeous.

As usual, the people watching excelled. I wish I had the time to pick a good spot for more "human interest" shots.

And STYX rounded up the festival. Photo quality at dusk wasn't too great and my night shots were pretty much throwaways. Next year I'll plan on having a better camera (or at least get a little closer to the stage). Does the roadie in the middle of this next pic give you an idea of how LOUD STYX was?

Looks cool, I have seen STYX and Kansas before, both put on a good show.

The pictures of the river are getting me more and more excited to get back up to the Niorbrara River next month!

re: Poison pics: Well, when we heard what the weather was going to be like, we decided to just go on Sunday. Every other eyar we go Friday through Sunday. We decided to skip Poison and from what our friends tell us, they put on a heckuva show. The opening acts, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Cinderella, were good also. I kinda regret our one day decision, but oh well...

Where/what is the festival? It's a four day rock festival in the Sandhills. This was the fifth year. Previous years have included acts such as Alice Cooper, ZZ Top, Grand Funk (three times!), Three Dog Night, Starship, Lynyrd Skynyrd (twice), Def Lepperd (SP?), Little River Band, Steppenwolf, 38 Special (twice), Pat Benetar, Gin Blossoms, Joan Jett and lots more. Mostly, it's classic rock acts, with occasional oldies bands like the Grass Roots, Knack, Creedence Clearwater Revisited, and sometimes you'll get somebody contemporary. It's just a few miles north of Comstock Nebraska, which is straight west of Ord. Generally it's about an hour and a half northwest of Grand Island or a little over an hour north of Kearney. The festival is one of three they hold each year, the others being country and gospel.
