Good stuff man. I like seeing threads like this. Holdredge doesn't look bad, but you can tell that these small plains towns have had all economic vitiality sucked out of them. I've always been curious to see Arthur, Nebraska. Without having been there, I can't fathom the concept of how remote that part of the state is. An entire county with only 444 people and a county seat of only 250!

I can't believe how much positive feedback the thread is getting. Not because of the photos, of course, but because of the subject matter. And these aren't exactly the most lively, or charming little small towns either. But the skyscraperpage forumers love it. Go figure.

. I said right there that it's not because of the photos...the photos are great! It's because of the subject matter. Small, dead Nebraska town photos in the "City Photos" section of a website called "Skyscraperpage".

Actually if you look at historic Omaha business districts like Dundee, Benson, Florence, etc... they are virtually indistinguishable from those of these small towns. I'm sure in their prime... they were all equally bustling as well. So we should be as excited about what these small towns once were and what might again be realized some day... just as much, as say, 24th Street in south Omaha. I think it is in this regard to a great extent ... that they are of interest to the 'urban minded' at skyscraperpage.com as well (certainly as much an interest as a decaying ghetto in East St Louis... for example).

Well, that cerainly is a positive way of looking at it, but I think it's most likely a bit of a stretch.

Sure, towns like that would have looked just like Dundee, Benson, Florence, South Omaha, etc. 100 years ago. The difference is, that the afformentioned towns have now been incorporated into a large metropolitan area, and are not towns anymore, but neighborhoods. With PEOPLE living there, too. Imagine that ;)

As Eomaha eluded to, part of it might be the fascination of seeing the decline in these towns similar to the ghetto threads found on SSP.
