As someone interested in photography, I thought I'd let you know that
during the week of
Sept. 11th, The Woodmen will be mimicking the 2 columns of light that
they
did in New York
after the bombings to commemorate the 5th anniversary.
They will also be hanging 2 gigantic flags from under the 'Woodmen'
signs
on the top of the building (1 on the South, 1 on the North).
I can't remember exactly how big they said that they were going to be,
but
they did mention that each of the stars would be 4ft wide.
should look really cool.

One flag is already up on the west side of the building. It's huge. It took them about 45 minutes to unfurl it. I didn't think these would be up until late next week.

There definitely is a correct way of doing it (stars right or left)... which it is, however, I couldn't tell you. I THINK they have it right, because it looks od to me, too, and I seem to remember grudgingly accepting the fact that right looked wrong to me.
I don't know how it's going to NOT be lit up on the side of the Woodmen.
Also whoever was shocked about this being visible f20 25 miles away, don't be to shocked. I know when I've come into Omaha from I-29 and 80 that First National, Woodmen, UP, NNG Building, and even from certain places, Mutual, are all visible from even further than that.
Great shots Mark! I especially like the "twin towers" view one, good stuff. I was hoping they would have the east facing one up for this weekends pics too but O well.

Yes MC - I would suggest anyone with a camera to get DT and take some snaps from your favorite location. I know I need more suggestions for great locations of vantage points - before they put up the night time twin towers of light. There is a full moon rising (Corn Moon - not Harvest Moon)which may make for another great pic if the perfect location can be found.
There will be a public ceremony Monday at 8 a.m. at Heartland of America Park in Omaha. Speakers will include Gen. James E. Cartwright, Commander, U.S. STRATCOM; Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb.; Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb.; Congressman Lee Terry, R-Neb.; Nebraska Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy; and Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey.
A rescue dog that searched for survivors at the World Trade Center will be present, and flags that have flown over the U.S. Capitol Building will be presented to police, fire and veterans' groups by the Omaha Chapter, Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge.
Woodmen will sponsor a weeklong Tribute in Light as a symbol of solidarity with the people of New York City. Twin beams of light, with a combined 10-billion candlepower, will light up the Omaha skyline each evening throughout the week of 9/11. The beams will be visible for more than 25 miles. A public lighting ceremony will be held Monday at 9 p.m. at 18th and Farnam streets.
It bugs me that both flags are off-center. What the heck?

I noticed that today as well. It is quite a bit off center. I was counting the veritcal lines in the building and it is off by about 1-2 woodman lines. Count yourself. Looks awesome otherwise. Tremendous tribute!! I guess I should just focus on what's really important about it.
Well here are some cliche shots. I still like this spot even though there are better ones to shoot from.
I noticed while I was there that people were pulling over along Farnam to take their shots from the car. It appears that this is having a big affect on people. This really is a wonderful tribute!!!! I hope NYC gets to see it. I also hope that other cities do something to honor this day as well. It's mostly sad to me knowing that it is just a matter of time before some other innocent people get to experience the ultimate in unbridled hatred.
I was just thinking that someone with an account at Skyscraperpage.com could start a tribute thread. If you are interested any of my pics can certainly be used.
I actually don't really like this tribute. I'm interested to see the beams of light, though.
